One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola's fantastic pitching performance upon his return from the disabled list was wasted due a lack of any Phillies offense.

What It Means:  The Phillies have lost seven consecutive series for the first time since 2006.  (Per Meghan Montemurro via Twitter.)

What Happened:  The Pirates scored their sole run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the sixth inning. Nola threw 89 pitches in his return, throwing seven solid innings.  He allowed four hits while striking out five.  The Phillies offense managed three hits off Pirates starting pitcher Chad Kuhl and four relievers.

Featured Card:  I haven't had any reasons to post a Nola card yet this season, so let's start with his base card from the Topps flagship set.  Hopefully I'm posting many more of the young pitcher's cards as the season progresses.

Transaction:  Nola was activated from the disabled list prior to the game.

One Sentence Summary:  Vince Velasquez continued his rough season as the Pirates took the win, 6-3.

What It Means:  The Phils last won two games in a row on April 26th and 27th.

What Happened:  Velasquez allowed five runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.  Meghan Montemurro pointed out on Twitter that Velasquez has now pitched six innings or less in 27 of his 32 starts with the Phillies.  Ivan Nova pitched into the eighth inning for the Pirates, scattering nine hits and allowing three Phillies runs.

Featured Card:  When the Phils are playing poorly, it becomes difficult to find any baseball card to be representative of any given loss.  Rather than struggle to make some far-reaching connection between this latest loss and a recent Phillies baseball card, here's a card of Phillies Room favorite Kent Tekulve that has yet to appear on this blog during its now eight-year run.  Whenever the Phillies and Pirates match up, I don't mind finding an excuse to post a Tekulve card.

One Sentence Summary:  Jeremy Hellickson was cruising before an apparent back injury forced him from the game, but the Phils still won 7-2.

What It Means:  Hellickson was trying to become the first Phillies starting pitcher to throw seven innings since Vince Velasquez did it back on May 6th.  He doubled in the top of the seventh to score Maikel Franco but had to leave the game with the injury.

What Happened:  Hellickson recorded his fifth win by allowing two runs (one earned) over six innings and allowing just two hits.  Pat Neshek, Joaquin Benoit and Hector Neris kept the Pirates off the board over the final three innings.  Cameron Rupp's three-run home run (4) in the ninth provided a nice cushion for the win.

Featured Card:  This is Hellickson's card from this year's Topps Gypsy Queen set.

Transaction:  Adam Morgan was recalled from the IronPigs to take Nick Pivetta's spot on the roster. Morgan will be available out of the bullpen for two games before Aaron Nola is expected to be activated for Sunday's series finale.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  If you had told me in 1982 that Mike Easler, Don Robinson and Kent Tekulve, all major stars for the Pirates in my mind, would be playing for the Phillies in the coming decade I would have been ecstatic.  Tekulve had a successful run with the Phillies as one of their most reliable relief pitchers in the late 1980s.  Easler and Robinson had less successful, and much shorter, stints with the Phillies.

Willie Montanez, the Phillies' regular center fielder in 1971 and 1972 and their starting first baseman in 1974, came back to the organization on August 10, 1982, having been released by the Pirates. Montanez appeared in the final 18 games of his 14-year career with the Phillies, hitting just .063 (1 for 16) primarily as a late-inning defensive replacement for Pete Rose at first base.

2000 Pacific Paramount #178 Ron Gant

Game 38 - Thursday Afternoon, May 18th in Arlington
Record - 14-24, 4th place, 10 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Rangers effortlessly completed the sweep of the Phillies, winning this ballgame 8-4.

What It Means:  Freddy Galvis had this to say after the game: "It sucks, man. That's the truth. If somebody says it's OK, it's not OK. We're (bleeping) losing a lot of games."  The Phillies have lost 15 of their last 18 and this is their worst start to a season (after 38 games) since the horrendous 2000 campaign.

What Happened:  Nick Pivetta was chased in the fifth inning, having thrown 107 pitches but allowing only a run on three hits.  Joely Rodriguez entered the ballgame and allowed seven runs on six hits while retiring only two batters.  His ERA increased from 4.05 to 6.97 in the course of about 35 minutes.  On the bright side, both Maikel Franco (6) and Tommy Joseph homered (6).

Featured Card:  Terry Francona's 2000 Phillies club finished with a record of 65-97.  That team actually won its 38th game to improve its record to 14-24.  Randy Wolf got the win and Jeff Brantley recorded his first save of the season.  Ron Gant had a big three-run home run in the fifth off Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile.

Transaction:  Following the game, Pivetta was optioned to Lehigh Valley and a corresponding roster move will be made prior to Friday's game.

Game 37 - Wednesday Night, May 17th in Arlington
Record - 14-23, 4th place, 10 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Zach Eflin was chased early as the Phillies dropped a forgettable game to the Rangers, 9-3.

What It Means:  The Phils will try to avoid the series sweep in this afternoon's matinee with the Rangers, before heading to Pittsburgh for a weekend series.

What Happened:  Eflin departed after four innings having allowed seven runs on 11 hits.  Michael Saunders hit a two-run home run (4) in the seventh inning to spoil the Rangers' shut-out.

Featured Card:  Phillies Room favorite Cole Hamels is on the disabled list with an oblique injury, so we won't get to see him in this series.  Hamels is under contract with the Rangers through the 2018 season, and in a recent interview he didn't rule out possibly returning to the Phillies one day.

2015 Choice Lehigh Valley IronPigs Update #22 Jayson Nix

Game 36 - Tuesday Night, May 16th in Arlington
Record - 14-22, 4th place, 10 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Yu Darvish baffled the Phillies hitters as the Rangers won, 5-1.

What It Means:  Maybe this isn't the year the Phillies start to put it all together?

What Happened:  Jerad Eickhoff faced off against his original team, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings of work. Nomar Mazara and Mike Napoli both homered for the Rangers.  Darvish allowed a run on four hits while striking out nine over seven innings.

Featured Card:  The last time the Phillies played the Rangers in Arlington was on April 2, 2014, as part of their opening series.  Jayson Nix was the Phillies shortstop on that day and this is his sole Phillies-related baseball card in my collection.

Nix began the 2014 season with the Phillies but was designated for assignment on May 12th.  Over the next 12 months, he'd bounce from the Rays to the Pirates to the Royals to the Orioles and then back to the Phillies, signing a minor league deal with the club on May 16, 2015.  Nix appeared in 29 games for the IronPigs, hitting .157 before being released on June 23rd.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  Similar to what I did with the weekend series with the Nationals, here are four 1982 Topps cards with connections to both teams in this Phillies series.  Steve Comer and Jim Kern featured prominently in my Phillies Missing Links custom set, with Comer's custom Phillies card here and Kern's custom Phillies card here.

Al Oliver and Fergie Jenkins received actual Phillies baseball cards to commemorate their time in Philadelphia.  Oliver hit the trifecta with Phillies cards in the 1985 Donruss, Fleer and Topps sets. I added Jenkins' 1966 Topps rookie card to my collection a few Christmases ago and this card has had a number of reprinted versions over the years.

2017 Topps Gypsy Queen #251 Pat Neshek

Game 35 - Sunday Night, May 14th in Washington
Record - 14-21, 3rd place, 9 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies battled in this one, but a two-run home run by Michael Taylor off Pat Neshek in the eighth put the Nationals ahead for good, 6-5.

What It Means:  Thankfully, the Phils won't see the Nationals again until mid-September.  In 12 meetings already this season, the Phillies are a respectable 5-7 against the Nationals and they were close in each game they lost.

What Happened:  Freddy Galvis had a big two-run triple in the eighth to give the Phillies a short-lived 5-4 lead.  Neshek had a 12 2/3 innings scoreless streak going over his first 14 games of the season before Taylor hit his blast.

Featured Card:  Neshek, a noted baseball card collector himself, already has two mainstream baseball card releases.  He has a card in the Topps Heritage set as well as the card featured here from Topps Gypsy Queen.

2017 Chachi In Action #1 Ty Kelly

Game 34 - Sunday Afternoon, May 14th in Washington
Record - 14-20, 3rd place, 8 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils battled back with three ninth inning runs, capped by Ty Kelly's big single, to beat the Nationals, 4-3.

What It Means:  After losing 11 of their last 13, hopefully this is the start of a good stretch for the Phillies.

What Happened:  The bullpen trio of Joely Rodriguez, Joaquin Benoit and Hector Neris held the Nationals scoreless for four innings after Jeremy Hellickson departed.  Down 3-0, Tommy Joseph got the Phillies on the board with his solo home run (5) in the seventh.  Aaron Altherr homered (8) to start the ninth.  Maikel Franco and Cameron Rupp added back-to-back doubles.  With Andrew Knapp running for Rupp, Freddy Galvis walked and Kelly came up with his big, game-winning hit.

Featured Card:  Kelly earns an official Chachi In Action card for his efforts, which shows off the pink accented uniforms worn this Mother's Day weekend.

Transaction:  The Phillies added Ben Lively to the active roster to serve as the 26th man given the double header on Sunday.

2017 Chachi Preview #4 Maikel Franco

Game 33 - Saturday Night, May 13th in Washington
Record - 13-20, Tied for 3rd place, 9 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Edubray Ramos allowed a walk-off home run to Bryce Harper and the Nationals won the game, 6-4.

What It Means:  After a day and a half of steady rain, which resulted in the Friday night game being washed out, the Phillies most likely wish the rain had continued for a few more days.

What Happened:  The Phillies went up 3-0 in the fourth thanks to a clutch, two-out, two run single from Cameron Rupp.  Tommy Joseph added an RBI doulbe in the fifth.  The Nationals put up a four spot against starting pitcher Nick Pivetta in the bottom of the fifth, chasing him from the game.  The game remained tied until Harper's blast ended it.

Featured Card:  This is the last of five "preview" cards created in the offseason to appear on this blog.  The card felt appropriate given that Maikel Franco is mired in an awful slump right now and this photo features him standing in the rain.  Franco went 1 for 4 in this game to increase his average to .208.

Transactions:  On Thursday, the Phillies optioned Jake Thompson to the IronPigs and Luis Garcia was recalled (again) the following day.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  Here's a hodge podge of four former Expos to have played with the Phillies at some point during the 1980s.  Stan Bahnsen actually pitched for the Phillies in 8 games during the 1982 season, compiling a respectable 1.35 ERA over 13 1/3 innings.  I created a Phillies Missing Links card for Bahnsen here.
