1985 Game 74 - 1985 Fleer #263 Shane Rawley

Phillies 11Cubs 2
Game 74 - Tuesday Night, July 2nd in Philadelphia
Record - 33-41, 5th Place, 11 games behind the Cardinals

One Sentence Summary:  After a quiet game the day before, the Phillies offense exploded for 11 runs on 12 hits in this 11-2 walloping of Rick Sutcliffe and the Cubs.

What It Means:  Sutcliffe came back down to earth following his 1984 Cy Young Award winning performance.  Still, it's impressive he was able to battle through five innings after the Phillies had quickly scored four in the first.  He departed having allowed seven runs on eight hits, including a pair of home runs.

What Happened:  The home runs allowed came from Glenn Wilson in the first with three on (not surprising) and Derrel Thomas in the fifth with one on (surprising).  Greg Gross kept the scoring going after Sutcliffe departed, with an RBI-triple in the sixth off former teammate Warren Brusstar.  Steve Jeltz added a two-run triple in the eighth.  I'm curious as to why Jeltz was in the game at that point.  The official record shows he entered the game as a defensive replacement for Thomas in the sixth right after Thomas had hit his home run.  Was Jeltz really that much of a defensive upgrade over Thomas, or had Thomas perhaps hurt himself rounding the bases?

Ozzie Virgil quietly scored twice and added two hits to improve his average to .282.

Featured Card:  Shane Rawley pitched his first complete game of the season, giving up two runs on eight hits.  As the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, Rawley evened his record at 6-6.

1985 Game 4 - 1985 Topps #636 Shane Rawley

Phillies 4Astros 2
Game 4 - Saturday Night, April 13th in Houston
Record - 1-3, 5th Place, 3 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies found a few clutch hits and Shane Rawley was effective in his first start of the season as the club edged the Astros, 4-2.

What It Means:  John Felske had his first win as a Phillies manager.  Drinks all around.

What Happened:  Jeff Stone went 3 for 4 out of the lead-off spot with a pair of runs scored.  The Phils scored first when Tim Corcoran singled home Stone in the fourth.  Samuel would triple Stone home in the sixth and Mike Schmidt would add a sacrifice fly to score Samuel.  Steve Jeltz added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth before Al Holland pitched a scoreless inning to notch his first save of the season.  It was also to be Holland's final save as a member of the Phillies.

Rawley went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (both unearned) on five hits.  Schmidt was now 0 for 7 to start the season, but he did have 3 RBIs.

Featured Card:  Rawley had been acquired from the Yankees in June 1984, so this was to be his first full season with the Phillies.  He'd emerge as one of the more reliable starting pitchers for the club in the mid to late 1980s, making the All-Star team in 1986 and winning 17 games in 1987.

Sadly, I don't have the 1985 Phillies calendar in my collection but he's a photo I found in an online auction of the month ahead for the team.  Game summary posts will be published exactly 35 years after each scheduled start time.

1982 Topps #197
1982 Topps #416
1982 Topps Appreciation:  The Phillies are taking an interleague spin through the A.L. West this season, which allows for a rare look at those teams seldom seen in these parts.  The 1982 version of me would have been giddy at the prospect of a Phillies-Mariners series as this would have (a) been super cool and (b) meant the Phillies and Mariners had somehow advanced to the World Series.

Shane Rawley spent the first four seasons of his big league career with the Mariners before being traded in April 1982 to the Yankees in a four-player deal.  On June 30, 1984, the Phillies acquired him from the Yankees for Marty Bystrom and Keith Hughes.  He'd have his best seasons with the Phillies, making the All-Star in 1986 and winning 17 games in 1987.

Bystrom's career was cut short by injuries and he'd appear in only 15 games for the Yankees in 1984 and 1985.  He stuck around in the Yankees system for two more seasons but never made it back to the majors.

1985 Topps #636
1985 Topps #284
1985 Topps Appreciation:  On June 30, 1984, the Phillies traded Marty Bystrom to the Yankees for Shane Rawley and Keigh Hughes.  Bystrom had been a hero for the 1980 World Champions, going 5-0 with a 1.50 ERA in the crucial month of September.  But injuries seemingly derailed his career and he'd never quite recapture the glory he found in September 1980.

This deal is one of the few from the early 1980s that actually worked out in the Phillies favor.  Rawley was one of the team's most reliable starting pitchers between the lean years of 1984 and 1988.  Over 145 games, he went 59-48 and made the All-Star team in 1986.

ERA:  Cole Hamels - 2.47
Strikeouts:  Cole Hamels - 187
Saves:  Jonathan Papelbon - 37

1988 Topps Appreciation:  We're nearing the end of the road for the 1988 Topps Appreciation segments that have been featured throughout the season in these series preview posts.  Both Shane Rawley and Steve Jeltz had no other logical fit throughout the season, so here they are, tacked on like a cruel afterthought to this Marlins series preview post.  They both deserved better than this.  (Well Rawley definitely did.  Maybe not Jeltz so much.)

1988 Topps #398, #406 and #407
1988 Topps Appreciation:  As we head into the All-Star break, I wanted to feature the three Phillies All-Star cards from the 1988 Topps set.  I'll have Utley's All-Star card from the 2014 Chachi set (#58 if you're keeping score at home) in my All-Star game wrap-up post, to be published at some point next week.

When opening packs of 1988 Topps back in the day, I was actually surprised to see Shane Rawley on an All-Star card.  Rawley had made the All-Star team back in 1986, but my young mind just never really thought of him as a true All-Star.  This probably wasn't fair to him, as he did have one of his better seasons in 1987, going 17-11 with a 4.39 ERA.

1979 Topps - Phillies Cards

1979 Topps #231, #253, #88 and #74
As the 2012 baseball season draws to a close, I'm getting closer to the end of my season-long appreciation of the 1979 Topps set.  Where possible, and when there's been a logical connection, I've featured the 1979 Topps cards of ex, current or future Phillies in my series preview posts.

There were several American League teams the Phillies didn't play against this year, so several worthy 1979 Topps Phillies-related cards didn’t have a chance to be properly featured. For posterity's sake, I decided to showcase some of those cards here and provide the full list of Phillies-related cards within the 1979 Topps set. (Please let me know if I’ve missed any.)

Of the 726 cards in the set, 111 have a Phillies connection, representing a little over 15% of the total set.  The list only includes people who actually played, coached or managed with the Phillies and it does not include those who passed through the Phillies minor league system.  So #243 Buck Martinez (drafted by the Phillies in 1967, but lost to the Royals via the Astros in the 1968 Rule 5 draft), #132 Rowland Office (played for the Phillies Triple-A affiliate in 1982), and several others aren’t included in the tally.

1980-1989 Phillies

1982 Fleer #637, 1985 Fleer #627, 1988 Fleer Award Winners #35 and 1989 Fleer Update #U-131
Next Sunday (or thereabouts) I'll feature the 1990 Topps Phillies cards in a post.  I knew when I started this series of posts that the '90s could be my downfall.  If this series were to ever stall out, it was going to come when I was trying to write about the 1994, 1995 or 1996 teams.  Hopefully, I'm able to maintain enough steam to push through the lean years to see this project through.

Before we get there though, I want to take a look back at the 1980's - the decade that started with so much promise for the Phillies only to end in a heap of festering poo.

Decade MVP
For the second decade in a row, Mike Schmidt was the team's most valuable player.  He won three National League MVP awards, six Gold Gloves and he was named to eight All-Star games.  He was voted to start at third base for the National League All-Stars in 1989, despite having announced his retirement several months before the game.
