1956 Topps - 1st Series Phillies Alumni

Similar to what I did recently with the 1965 Topps set and the Phillies Alumni within that set's first series, I wanted to post a gallery of the Phillies within the first 100 cards of the 1956 Topps set.  You can follow along as I document each card in the iconic 1956 Topps set here, and clicking on the links below each card will take you to that player's post.

1954 Topps Phillies - Only 1 Card Remains

I've previously established on this blog that my Mom rocks.  However, if you're new to the blog or if you'd like a quick recap of the reasons for this sentiment:

1.  She is unconditionally supportive and loving and has had my back since the day I was born.
2.  She checks my want lists and finds me old Phillies baseball cards for Christmas, my birthday or other special occasions.
3.  See statement 1.

I recently celebrated a birthday and my Mom's gift selection abilities amazed me yet again.  Thanks to her, I'm now just one card away from a complete 1954 Topps Phillies team set.  The 10 cards featured here have been added to my collection, courtesy of my Mom's continued awesomeness.

(Yes, the Herman Wehmeier card is a Reds card, but he pitched part of the 1954 season with the Phillies, so into the 1950s Phillies binder it goes.)

1955 Bowman and Topps Phillies - Not for Use with Bicycles

1955 Bowman #41, #110
#111 and #210
I've managed to stretch the bounty received from the "Santa Brings Way Too Many Awesome Baseball Cards to Jim" tradition into several posts and this is my sixth and final installment.  My Dad had been diligent in tracking down Phillies cards from the 1951 and 1955 Bowman sets over the past several years solely because those are the sets he remembered best from his childhood.  He told me on several occasions that he definitely had a complete 1955 Bowman set when he was younger, but it mysteriously disappeared after he left home for college.

My Mom also clearly remembers the "TV Set" as being the cards that made the loudest and coolest sounds when folded and inserted into the spokes of a bicycle.  While she was shopping around for cards featured on my Phillies wantlists, she decided to add a few TV Set cards to my growing vintage collection.

Thanks to her pure awesomeness as a Mom, I'm now four cards closer to a 1955 Bowman Phillies team set.

Also included in the magic Christmas shoebox were three cards from the 1955 Topps set.  This set was the older brother to what would become probably the best baseball card set of all-time - the 1956 Topps set.

1956 Topps #78 Herman Wehmeier

This is another Tommy's Collectibles $5 purchase from December 1994. I bought a ton of Phillies cards while I lived in North Carolina. Phillies cards in New Jersey are usually sold at a small premium, while dealers in North Carolina in the early '90s couldn't wait to unload anyone who wasn't an Atlanta Brave.

Herm came up with the Reds in 1945, and he played with the Phils from June 1954 until May 1956. On May 11, 1956, Herm was traded with Murry Dickson to the St. Louis Cardinals for Harvey Haddix, Ben Flowers and Stu Miller. According to Baseball Almanac.com, Herm last wore #45 for the Reds in 1948. However, he's pictured here wearing #45. It's a mystery . . .
