We're inching closer to actual game action in 2017, and I wanted to check in on the comings and goings since the last Phillies game was played in October.  A number of former Phillies signed minor league contracts throughout January and early February, and they've joined the highly collectible Chachi Departures insert set.  Here's a look at the master checklists for the latest ex-Phillies.

If my tracking is correct, the only members of the 2016 Phillies squad still seeking employment are Ryan Howard, Cedric Hunter and Frank Herrmann.  Hunter, last year's opening day right fielder, received a 50-game suspension in November for testing positive for amphetamine.

Fun at the @Phillies Photo Day! (Part Three)

2016 Chachi Photo Day #26
Marlins 3Phillies 2 (11)
Game 94 - Monday Night, July 18th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-51, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola's six scoreless innings were wasted when Jeanmar Gomez couldn't convert the save and the Marlins eventually won the game in 11.

What It Means:  The extra inning loss was especially tough to take, given that the Phillies were able to score twice off Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez.  Fernandez struck out 14 and notched his 500th career strike out in this game.

What Happened:  The Phils got their runs on a Maikel Franco ground out in the first and a Tommy Joseph solo home run (12) in the seventh.  Nola lasted six innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five.  Gomez blew his third save of the season and Brett Oberholtzer surrendered a lead-off home run to Martin Prado in the 11th.

Featured Cards:  This is the last round of Phillies Photo Day custom cards in the very limited 2016 Chachi Photo Day insert set.  Again, I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating and gracious most of the Phillies players, coaches and broadcasters were as they took the time to pose for photos with our sons.  The only player not walking around pre-game was Jared Eickhoff, who was that day's starting pitcher.  Every other player, coach and broadcaster (including veterans Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard) spent more than a half hour on the field posing for photos with the fans.

Kudos to the Phillies for a very enjoyable, fan-friendly experience!

2016 Phillies Team Issue 2 #17 Peter Bourjos

Phillies 9Diamondbacks 8 (10)
Game 80 - Wednesday Afternoon, June 29th in Phoenix
Record - 35-45, 4th place, 12 1/2 games behind the Nationals

Hawaii Catch-up - Game 6 of 9

One Sentence Summary:  Peter Bourjos led the way with a two-run home run in the first and by scoring the winning run in the 10th as the Phillies completed the sweep with a 9-8 victory.

What It Means:  Bourjos hit .410 in June, tops in the National League for the month.  He entered the month with a .199 batting average and with his hot bat he ended the month at .262.  He's suddenly found himself as a potential trade chip for the Phillies come trade deadline time.

What Happened:  The Phils just kept battling in this game, scoring four times in the eighth after the Diamondbacks had scored three times in the seventh.  Bourjos had the big moments, but Cesar Hernandez had four hits while Cody Asche had three hits and drove in three runs.  Bourjos scored the eventual winning run on a Tyler Goeddel sacrifice fly.  Brett Oberholtzer recorded his first career save with a scoreless 10th.

Featured Card:  Bourjos hasn't appeared on any other Phillies cards this season other than his two cards in the team's two photo card sets.

Island Report:  We had a long but enjoyable day touring the entire island of Oahu and eventually making our way to the Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore.  The boys enjoyed the interactive lessons and activities.  We also attended the dinner show and luau followed by the Hā: Breath of Life evening show.  The latter was absolutely spectacular.

Howard Homer Wins It in 11! #ChachiNow

2016 Chachi #40
Phillies 4Indians 3 (11)
Game 23 - Friday Night, April 29th in Philadelphia
Record - 13-10, 3rd place, 2 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Ryan Howard won the game with an 11th inning walk-off home run against the Indians.

What It Means:  These Phillies are exciting!  Who saw this coming?  The pitching staff's 240 strikeouts currently leads the Majors.

What Happened:  Howard had quite a night, going 3 for 5 with a single, double and his dramatic home run.

Adam Morgan was recalled to take Charlie Morton's place in the rotation, as Morton is now lost for the season with a bad hamstring injury.  Morgan struck out seven in his five innings of work, allowing all three Indians runs.  The bullpen was phenomenal, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out 11.  Andrew Bailey and David Hernandez each pitched a pair of scoreless frames.

Featured Card:  A walk-off home run by the veteran qualifies in my book for a Chachi Highlight card.  (I'm happy to see Howard has received a Topps Now card.)

Field Report:  Now in the interest of full disclosure, we were not around for Howard's game winning heroics.  A very cold night, coupled with a very early Saturday morning wake-up call for Doug's soccer tournament, meant we needed to leave relatively early.  We left after the fifth inning with the score tied at three.

Before the game, we admired the new giant Topps line-up cards for David Lough, Morgan and Peter Bourjos.  Walking through the concourse, we stopped by the radio booth and listened to the end of Jim Jackson's interview of Aaron Nola.  When Nola exited the booth, he was kind enough to pose for a picture with Doug.  Doug and I agreed that we needed to be better prepared next time with a Sharpie and an extra team photo card set for autograph purposes.

Transaction:  Morgan was recalled from Lehigh Valley on Friday afternoon and reliever Luis Garcia was optioned down to the IronPigs.

2016 Phillies Team Issue #17 Peter Bourjos

Phillies 5Mets 4 (11)
Game 16 - Wednesday Night, April 20th in Philadelphia
Record - 7-9, 3rd place, 5 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Peter Bourjos, batting ninth behind the pitcher, drove in the winning run with an infield hit in the 11th, giving the Phillies a 5-4 win.

What It Means:  Manager Pete Mackanin batted Bourjos ninth, representing the first time a pitcher has batted eighth in a Phillies line-up since Steve Carlton did it on June 1, 1979.  Mackanin was just trying anything to get the offense going, and the move ended up working.

What Happened:  Jeremy Hellickson didn't escape the fifth inning, allowing four runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.  The bullpen trio of Hector Neris, Dalier Hinojosa and Jeanmar Gomez held the Mets scoreless through 6 2/3 inning, striking out a combined 11 batters.

Freddy Galvis doubled with one out in the 11th, moved to second when David Lough was intentionally walked and went to third on a wild pitch.  Bourjos just beat out his infield hit to third, allowing Galvis to score the winning run.

Featured Card:  This is Bourjos' sole Phillies card to date, found within the team issued photo card set.

Transaction:  Prior to this game, James Russell was designated for assignment and Andrew Bailey had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley.  Russell struggled mightily in his seven games with the Phillies, allowing 9 hits and 5 walks in just 4 1/3 innings pitched.  He leaves the team with an 18.69 ERA.

South Jersey's own Bailey appeared in 4 games for the IronPigs, pitching to a 1.80 ERA.  He'll wear #38 for the Phillies and (more importantly) he'll be card #37 in the 2016 Chachi set.

2016 Phillies Team Issue #13 Freddy Galvis

Padres 4Phillies 3
Game 7 - Monday Afternoon, April 11th in Philadelphia
Record - 2-5, 4th place, 3 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  A bizarre interpretation of the infield fly rule by the umpiring crew contributed to this 4-3 loss to the Padres in the Phillies home opener.

What It Means:  In the bottom of the sixth, the Phillies loaded the bases with nobody out.  Darin Ruf lofted a pop fly to shallow left field, which fell between the Padres shortstop and the left fielder.  The umpires deemed the infield fly rule to be in effect, even though the ball landed no where near the infield.  Ruf was ruled out, Odubel Herrera was tagged out at third, and the official scorer called it a sacrifice fly double play.  Pete Mackanin argued to no avail.  The fans booed to no avail.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola was tagged with the loss, as he allowed four runs on six hits in his seven innings.  Maikel Franco had three hits, but the offense overall remains relatively quiet and non-productive.

Featured Card:  I gave my nine-year-old son Doug the sole vote for this post's featured card and without hesitation he chose Freddy Galvis.  Galvis went 0 for 4 at the plate, but he made several dazzling defensive plays at shortstop and without his defense, it wouldn't have been such a close game.

This is Galvis' card from the new team issued photo card set, and I'll dedicate a full post to this new set at some point soon.

Field Report:  And we were there!  It turned out to be a gorgeous day for baseball and although the team lost, Doug and I still had fun.  I was very happy to see that giant Topps cards were back in Ashburn Alley, with nine giant cards displaying the game's starting line-up.  The picture below shows cards that never were (or might not ever be) for Cameron Rupp, Cedric Hunter and Peter Bourjos.

Earlier Than Ever, Here are the New Uniform Numbers

2015 Topps #628
2015 Topps Heritage #516
2013 Topps #281
2014 Topps Heritage #80
In an unusual move, and a move that I suspect was designed by the Phillies solely to personally delight me, new players were assigned uniform numbers upon their arrivals beginning in mid-November.  There was another update to roster numbers in early December and then one-off updates as additional non-roster invitees were added.  In years past, the roster page on the Phillies website had the dreaded "--" in place of any uniform number for new arrivals until mid to late January.

As of this writing, there are still some corrections needed.  The Phillies currently have assigned #78 to non-roster infielders Angelys Nina and Brock Stassi.  Similarly, #61 is currently assigned to both pitcher Greg Burke and assistant coach Jorge Velandia.  I'm sure these duplicate assignments will be fixed before pitchers and catchers officially report on February 18th.  Finally, non-roster invitee Cedric Hunter doesn't even appear on the Phillies website yet and he'll need a number once spring training starts.

As I've done in the past, here's a look at the new uniform numbers for the 2016 edition of the Phillies. (Buckle up, because this is quite the long list.)

New Players - Under 60 Division
#2 Tyler Goeddel - Both Ben Revere and Chase d'Arnaud wore this number last season.  It's a good sign for Goeddel's chances of sticking with the Phillies that they assigned him such a low uniform number.

#15 Emmanuel Burriss - Burriss is going with the number last worn by Jordan Danks, since the #16 he wore last season with the Nationals is currently occupied by Cesar Hernandez.
#17 Peter Bourjos - Neither of Bourjos' prior numbers (#25 and #8) were available, so he takes over the number last worn by Brian Bogusevic.
#19 J.P. Arencibia - The last Phillies player to wear #19 was Tony Gwynn, Jr. in 2014.
#21 Ryan Jackson - Adam Loewen wore this number last season.
#28 Vincent Velasquez - Both Kevin Correia and Erik Kratz wore #28 in 2015.  Velasquez had worn #67 with the Astros last season.

#30 David Hernandez - Reliever Justin De Fratus had worn this number for the past two seasons.  Hernandez has worn this number with the Diamondbacks since 2011.
#31 Michael Mariot - Jerome Williams wore #31 for the past two seasons.  Mariot had previously worn #48 with the Royals.
#34 Brett Oberholtzer - Oberholtzer's more familiar #39 was unavailable, so he takes over the number last worn by Aaron Harang.  The pitcher first wore #65 in 2013 when he made his debut with the Astros.
#38 Andrew Bailey - Bailey had worn #38 last season for the Yankees.

2012 Topps Update #US138
2013 Topps #96
2015 Topps #296
2014 Topps Heritage #328
#40 James Russell - Non-roster invitee Russell takes over the number he's worn during six seasons with the Cubs, which means the old #40, Aaron Altherr, needs a new number.  (See below.)
#41 Ernesto Frieri - Originally assigned #44, Frieri assumes Wall of Fame member Charlie Manuel's number.  No player or coach had been assigned Manuel's number since the former manager's firing in August 2013.  The last Phillies player to wear this number was Gavin Floyd in 2004.  Frieri's switch to #41 was made after the Phillies had signed Edward Mujica.
#44 Edward Mujica - The often injured Jonathan Pettibone was the last player to wear this number.  Mujica last wore #44 as a member of the Cardinals in 2012 and 2013.
#47 Charlie Morton - Sean O'Sullivan's old number went to Morton, whose more familiar #50 is currently occupied by Hector Neris.  Let's watch to see if a deal is struck for Neris' #50 given Morton's veteran status.

#53 Daniel Stumpf - Ken Giles won't be needing #53 with the Phillies anymore, so his old number went to Stumpf.
#56 Frank Herrmann - Nefi Ogando and Cesar Jimenez both wore this number last season for the Phillies.
#58 Jeremy Hellickson - The franchise's all-time saves leader won't be needing #58 this season, so Hellickson takes over the number.  Hellickson had previously worn this number with the Rays and Diamondbacks.

New Numbers
#23 Aaron Altherr - Altherr takes over the number last worn by departed manager Ryne Sandberg.  His old #40 went to non-roster invitee Russell.

New Coaches
1997 SP #139

#9 John McLaren - McLaren takes over the number that had been assigned to Domonic Brown since 2010.
#12 Mickey Morandini - In the least surprising number-related news, the new first base coach will wear the number he wore during his playing days with the Phillies.  The departed assistant hitting coach John Mizerock wore the number last season.
#33 Rick Kranitz - The new bullpen coach will wear the number last worn by Cliff Lee.

Phillies in Number Only
#30 A.J. Achter - Achter was property of the Phillies for less than a month this offseason before his roster spot was needed by Morton.  The roster page had assigned #30 to Achter before it ultimately went to David Hernandez.
#38 Dan Otero - Otero briefly assumed the number worn by Chad Billingsley in 2015.  The Giles trade required a roster opening and Otero was traded to the Indians for cash.

Highest number - Not counting Dalier Hinojosa and his #94, catcher Logan Moore wins the award this year with his #84 assignment.

Numbers available - The only real number under 60 currently available is the #3 worn by Jeff Francoeur last season.  As has been the case for the Phillies in recent years, they'll do everything to avoid assigning numbers of greats who have recently departed.  For that reason #11 (Jimmy Rollins), #26 (Chase Utley) and #35 (Cole Hamels) have yet to be reassigned and they most likely won't be in 2016.

If I had to guess, I'd say Hunter ends up with #3, Velandia switches to #62, and Nina and Stassi flip a coin to see who ends up with #76.

Bourjos Added to the Outfield Mix

2016 Chachi New Additions #5
The Phillies claimed outfielder Peter Bourjos off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday, adding a key fourth outfielder to the mix for their 2016 roster.  Bourjos has only played center field during his big league career, so it will be interesting to see how they work him into the mix with Odubel Herrera slated to start in center.  A mix of Cody Asche, Aaron Altherr and Darnell Sweeney are expected to man the corner outfield positions.

Bourjos spent the first four years of his career with the Angels and the last two seasons with the Cardinals.  A career .241 hitter, Bourjos is known more for his glove than for his bat and the Phillies actually referenced his above average outfield range in their press release announcing the move.  His addition likely means Jeff Francoeur will be playing elsewhere in 2016.

Bourjos has been appearing in baseball card releases since 2007.  In 2015, he appeared in the Topps flagship set, Topps Opening Day, and the Gypsy Queen Glove Stories insert set.

2016 Chachi Departures #3
2016 Chachi Departures #4
When the Phillies announced the Bourjos move, they also announced that pitcher Nefi Ogando had been claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins.  Ogando appeared in 4 games with the Phillies last season and he'll join the Missing Links ranks as yet another recent Phillies player with no official Phillies baseball cards.

Finally, reliever Justin De Fratus has latched on with the Mariners, signing a one-year deal worth $750,000.

Moving On - 2015-2016 Offseason
