1985 Game 52 - 2020 Chachi 1985 Topps Missing Links #10 Pat Zachry

Expos 4Phillies 3
Game 52 - Saturday Night, June 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 18-34, 5th Place, 14 1/2 games behind the Cubs

One Sentence Summary:  Shane Rawley departed with an injury and the offense couldn't capitalize on plenty of scoring opportunities, as the Phillies lost this one to the Expos, 4-3.

What It Means:  This was the low-point of the season for the Phillies, as they dropped to 16 games below .500 for the only time all year.  They wouldn't climb out of fifth place until early September, and that was only for a brief stay in fourth, but from this point on the club did in fact play better baseball.

It was also Kodak Camera Night at the Vet, with fans allowed down on the turf prior to the game to snap pictures of the players and coaches as they quickly walked by.

What Happened:  The offense went 4 for 16 with runners in scoring position, largely wasting their 10-hit output.  The Phillies mounted a brief rally in the seventh, started when Luis Aguayo hit a lead-off double and with two outs Greg Gross doubled him home.  Juan Samuel followed with a single to score Gross.

Shane Rawley exited the game with an apparent injury after walking Mike Fitzgerald to start the third.  He had allowed a solo home run to Andre Dawson in the first to give the Expos an early lead.  Jeff Reardon recorded another two-inning save, his 17th, and lowering his season ERA to 1.08.

Featured Card:  It was the end of the line for Pat Zachry (see below) and the veteran pitcher's only official Phillies baseball cards could be found within the 1985 Tastykake Phillies set.  I created this 1985 Topps-style card for him using his photo from the 1985 Phillies Yearbook.

Transaction:  Jerry Koosman was activated from the disabled list, and it seemed as the short-term plan was to use him in long relief.  Injuries to Rawley and Steve Carlton saw him inserted back into the starting pitching rotation until his own injuries cut short his season in August.  To make room for Koosman on the roster, reliever Zachry was designated for assignment.  He'd ultimately be released, ending his 10-year big league career.

1985 Topps Appreciation:  I'm featuring a quartet of Dodgers from the 1985 Topps set with Phillies connections for this installment of 1985 Topps Appreciation.  Of the four players featured, Mariano Duncan had the most memorable tenure with the Phillies, as he was a member of the 1993 N.L. Championship squad.

It's easy to forget Pat Zachry's time with the club as the former N.L. Rookie of the Year wrapped up his 10-year career with 10 mostly forgettable games with the 1985 Phillies.  Ken Howell was supposed to lead the Phillies pitching staff in 1989 (and beyond) but arm injuries curtailed his career and he made only 51 starts for the Phillies in '89 and '90.

And Fernando-Mania briefly (and quietly) invaded Philadelphia in the strike-shortened 1994 season, when Fernando Valenzuela went 1-2 in eight games for the Phillies before moving on to the Padres for the 1995 season.

1985 Phillies - No Missing Links

1985 Topps Traded #121T, 1986 Donruss #34 and 1986 Topps #418
For just the second time since I started this series, I came across a year in which every single player spending time with the Phillies actually has a Phillies baseball card.  (The only other year to this point is 1993.)  I don't think there's any real reason for this to have happened in 1985, as it wasn't a terrific year for the Phils.  But with a little luck, and the existence of the team-issued Tastykake sets, every member of the 1985 squad graces at least a little Phillies cardboard.

In fact, there are just 10 players who appeared with the Phillies in 1985 who didn't appear in either the regular Topps base or traded set.  I created cards for these 10 players, and posted them here.

3 Cards or More
32 Players

Right-handed reliever Dave Shipanoff just makes the cut with three total cards from the 1986 Donruss, Fleer and Tastykake sets.  He appeared in 26 games with the Phils in late 1985, before injuries cut his career short.

2 Cards

Derrel Thomas (63 games in 1985) - 1985 Topps Traded #121T and 1986 Topps #158
Rocky Childress (16 games in 1985 and 2 games in 1986) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies and 1986 Tastykake Phillies

Thomas finished up his 15-year career with the Phillies.  He has the distinction of appearing with three different teams on 1985 baseball cards.  His 1985 Topps card features him as a member of the Expos.  The Expos sold Thomas to the Angels in September 1984, and he played in just 14 games with California.  Fleer hustled a little more than Topps and has him with the Angels on his 1985 card.  Finally, Topps issued a Phillies card for Thomas within its traded series.

Childress never received a standard-sized Phillies card.

1 Card
Pat Zachry (10 games in 1985) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies
Alan Knicely (7 games in 1985) - 1986 Topps #418
Rich Surhoff (2 games in 1985) - 1985 Tastykake Phillies

The inclusion of Knicely's card within the 1986 Topps set always puzzled me, and it would never happen in today's Topps sets.  Knicely came to the Phillies in August 1985 as part of the Bo Diaz deal with the Reds.  Injuries limited his time with the club, and his final Phillies line reads - 0 for 7 with 4 strikeouts.

Technically, Zachry has two cards as he's featured with the rest of the Phillies pitching staff on a multi-player card included within the 1985 Tastykake set.  The 1976 National League Rookie of the Year appeared in just 10 games for the Phillies before getting released in June 1985.

Surhoff, B.J.'s older brother, pitched just one full inning for the Phillies, earning a win on September 8th.  On September 13th, he was traded to the Rangers for Dave Stewart.

1979 Burger King Phillies #12 and
1979 Topps #621
1979 Topps Flashback:  This season is starting to make me a little wacky.  Today's featured players have nothing in common except they are both sporting fantastic examples of late-'70s-style, free-flowing, stone cold groovy beards on their 1979 cards.

Doug Bird appeared in 32 games (all but one in relief) for the 1979 Phillies after being acquired from the Royals for Todd Cruz.  He had been part of a steady Kansas City bullpen that advanced to the A.L.C.S. three years in a row (1976-1978) only to be defeated by the Yankees each time.  The Phils released him at the outset of the 1980 season, and he spent the next four seasons with the Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox before calling it a career.

Pat Zachry wrapped up his 10-year career by appearing in 10 games with the 1985 Phillies.  Acquired in spring training 1985 from the Dodgers for Al Oliver, Zachry put up a respectable 4.26 ERA with the Phils before getting released in June.  Zachry won the N.L. Rookie of the Year Award in 1976 after going 14-7 with a 2.74 ERA for the Big Red Machine.

1985 Topps Phillies - Missing Links

My post on the 1985 Topps Phillies cards is not quite ready yet, but I wanted to share these "cards that never were" for players who should have had Phillies cards in the 1985 Topps set.  There are only ten players who appeared with the Phils in 1985 who didn't have Topps Phillies cards in either Topps' regular or traded sets.  Here are those missing ten cards:
