1973 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:
  41
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photo cards issued throughout the 1970s, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  Most of the cards (excluding the Jim Essian card) have blue facsimile autographs on the fronts.  The backs of the photo cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1973.

How Distributed:  The photo cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cards were ever available in complete set form.

Complete Standard Checklist (Unnumbered, presented here alphabetically):

One and Only Phillies Baseball Card (0)
First Appearance in Phillies Team Issued Set (15):  Brett, Christenson, Culver, Diorio, Essian, Grabarkewitz, Lonborg, Pagan, C. Robinson, Rogodzinski, Ruthven, Tovar (2), Unser, Wallace
Returning Players in Phillies Team Issued Set (21):  Anderson, Boone, Bowa, Brandon, Carlton, Doyle, Harmon, Hutton, Johnson, Lersch, Luzinski, Montanez, B. Robinson (2), Ryan, Scarce, Schmidt, Selma, Twitchell (2), Wilson

Manager (1):  Ozark
Coach (4):  Berringer, DeMars, Rippelmeyer, Wine

Surprises:
I'm surprised only by the comprehensiveness of this set's checklist.  35 players appeared in a game in 1973 for the Phillies and only 2 were omitted from this set (see below).  The Phillies were issuing new cards as late as mid to late August for newly acquired players too.  George Culver was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on August 10th and Billy Grabarkewitz was acquired from the Angels on August 14th.

Even Essian, who was in the Phillies' system the entire season and was a September call-up received a card.  The catcher didn't make his big league debut until September 15th.

Omissions:  The 2 players omitted are catcher Larry Cox and reliever Dave Wallace.  Cox is a bit of a surprise omission as he was on the team's opening day roster, but he appeared in only one game on April 18th before getting sent back down to Triple-A Eugene for the rest of the season.  Wallace appeared in four games with the Phillies, pitching 3 2/3 innings, between mid-July and early August.

Variations/Rarities:  Based on the checklist found at The Trading Card Database, there are signature variations for the Bob Boone and Mike Schmidt cards.  The cards contain the same photos, but the signature placement differs slightly on both cards.  I've also added a Del Unser card to my collection without a blue facsimile autograph, shown below.

Signature Variations
1. Bob Boone (slightly different placement)
2. Mike Schmidt (slightly different placement)
3. Del Unser (no signature)

Finally, there are three players (Bill Robinson, Cesar Tovar and Wayne Twitchell) who have two versions of their cards available featuring different photos.  I'm not sure which variation is more prevalent than the others, so I've listed these variations as part of the main checklist above.

Resources:  The Trading Card DatabaseBeckett.com.  The Beckett database entry for this set lists the set as "1973 Phillies Team Issue" and contains only 29 cards.

This set was originally featured in a post back in November 2014, and I'm going to slowly go through these team-issued set posts and update them with new information learned (if any) over the past six years.

Series Preview - Pirates at Phillies: July 3rd to July 6th

Monday 7:05, Tuesday 4:05, Wednesday 7:05 and Thursday 6:05
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA

At the Ballpark:  On Thursday night, fans will enjoy the first of two post-game fireworks shows scheduled.

1982 Topps #543
1982 Topps Traded #24T
1982 Topps #352
1982 Topps Traded #100T
1982 Topps Appreciation:  I like seeing the before and after cards of players appearing in the base Topps set and then later in the Traded series.  The two players featured above - Dick Davis and Bill Robinson - were traded for each other . . . technically speaking.

In a three-team trade on June 15, 1982, which was then the non-waiver trading deadline, the Phillies sent outfielder Dick Davis to the Blue Jays for Wayne Nordhagen.  The Phillies then turned around and immediately sent Nordhagen off to the Pirates for Bill Robinson.

As a postscript to the deal, a week later on June 22nd, the Pirates and Blue Jays again swapped Nordhagen and Davis.  Nordhagen appeared in just one game for the Pirates while Davis made it into three games with the Blue Jays.

1974 Johnny Pro Phillies - Complete Set (at least by my standards)

Several years ago, I began a quest to collect a complete Phillies team set of 1974 Johnny Pro Phillies cards.  I was able to easily (and cheaply) add 11 of the 12 cards to my collection, but the twelfth card, the elusive (and expensive) Mike Schmidt card, remained the sole card I needed to complete this team set.

To provide a little more background on this set, here's what I wrote about it back in November 2012:
I wasn't aware of the awesomeness of the 1974 Johnny Pro Phillies set until adding the Bill Robinson card to my collection last month at the Valley Forge card show.  Johnny Pro Enterprises (not sure what they did back in the day) issued two regional baseball card sets in the early '70s.  Their first set was released in 1973 and featured 28 different Orioles cards on a green background.  In 1974, Johnny Pro issued 12 Phillies cards on a white background.
The player photos on these cards were designed to be perforated and displayed in a stand that could also be punched out of the white background.  Which brings us to the reason for this post.

A few weeks ago, I was browsing eBay and came across a partial set of eleven 1974 Johnny Pro Phillies cards for sale, but the photos had long ago been separated from their original white backgrounds.  The picture accompanying the auction is shown at the top of this post.  Most importantly to me, included in the lot was the Schmidt card I needed.  I was one of only two bidders, and I was a little surprised my low bid actually won the auction.  Sure, the Schmidt card is missing its background, but I'm now considering my 1974 Johnny Pro Phillies set to be complete.

A few of these cards may need to be upgraded at some point, but the full gallery of this terrific oddball set from 1974 is presented below.

1973 Topps #37, #659, #2 and #225
1973 Topps Flashback:  Today's flashback features a quartet of players who spent time with both Major League teams from the Keystone State.

Of the players featured here, I know the least about Jose Pagan and I was surprised to see he accumulated a solid 15-year career as an occasional starting shortstop and utility infielder.  Pagan played in just 46 games for the 1973 Phillies at the very end of his career.  Prior to that, he spent eight seasons with the Pirates (1965-1972) and parts of seven seasons with the Giants (1959-1965).  This is his sole mainstream Phillies baseball card appearance.

Pagan, Richie Hebner and Al Oliver were all teammates on the World Champion 1971 Pirates club.  Hebner joined the Phillies for two seasons in 1977 and 1978, and Scoop spent a brief time with the Phils in the summer of 1984.

Bill Robinson was serving his first stint with the Phillies when his 1973 Topps card was released, and he was traded to the Pirates in April 1975 for pitcher Wayne Simpson.  Robinson would win a ring with the 1979 Pirates as their starting left fielder.  Like Pagan, he finished up his impressive career with a short stint with the Phillies in 1982 and 1983.

1974 Topps Stamps Phillies

The 1974 Topps Stamps set was released as a stand-alone set and not as an insert within packs of the flagship 1974 Topps set.  Stamps came twelve to a sheet and there are 240 unnumbered stamps in the entire set.  I have the ten Phillies stamps from the set, but I'm still trying to track down the Phillies stamp album issued to hold the team set.

All the players in this set can also be found as Phillies in the 1974 Topps set.  The photo used for Wayne Twitchell is the same one used for this 1973 Topps card.  My scanner didn't cut off the Billy Grabarkewitz stamp - it's just cut that way.  A quick Google Images search for the same stamp shows that Garbarkewitz must have been on the edge of a stamp sheet, and all images I've found show the same borderless left side.
