Just One Card - 2000s Phillies Edition (Part Two - 2005 to 2009)

2005 Phillies Team Issue #33
2008 Phillies Team Issue #57
2009 Phillies Team Issue Update #23
Having tackled the Phillies players of the 1980s and 1990s to have never before appeared on a Phillies baseball card, I'm now going to turn my attention to the decade of the 2000s.  I started the Chachi custom baseball card sets in 2005, so the players from 2005 onwards have already appeared (at least in virtual form) on a Phillies baseball card.  But I'll still pay tribute to those players with an official Missing Links card.

By my tally, and I'll readily admit up front that I could be wrong, there were 34 players who suited up for the Phillies between 2000 and 2009 who never appeared on a Phillies baseball card.  But before we get to those 34 players, here are the players who just missed the cut having appeared on exactly one baseball card as a member of the Phillies.  (This is part two, and part one appears here.)

2006 Topps Fan Appreciation Day #12 Rick White

Reds 1, Phillies 0
Game 14 - Tuesday Night (and Wednesday Afternoon), April 16th (and 17th) in Cincinnati
Record - 6-8, 4th Place, 6 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The punchless Phillies lost 1-0 to the Reds in a game that was suspended on Tuesday night and completed in under ten minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

What It Means:  I'm writing this as the Phils are being completely demolished by the Reds in the final game of the series.  Where's the offense?  Through 2 1/2 games against the Reds, the Phillies have managed two runs.  They had two hits in this game and they have two hits through six innings in tonight's game.

What Went Wrong:  This game was initially delayed by rain and then heavy rain started to fall as the Reds were about to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at one.  The game was suspended and resumed at 5:30 this afternoon.  The Reds quickly loaded the bases against Phillippe Aumont, aided by a crucial error from center fielder Ben Revere, and Jay Bruce singled home the winning run without Aumont ever retiring a batter.

Kyle Kendrick pitched very well in the losing effort.  In seven innings, Kendrick allowed just two hits while striking out four.

Featured Card:  Steve F. had a fantastic idea for a card for part one of this game.  Two players have worn #00 in franchise history - Omar Olivares in 1995 and Rick White in 2006.  Olivares never made it onto a Phillies baseball card, and White's only Phillies baseball card appearance was on the card featured here.

2006 Chachi #41 Rick White

Marlins 1, Phillies 0
Game 49 - Sunday Afternoon, May 30th in Miami

If not for the lingering euphoria from Roy Halladay's perfect game on Saturday night, the woeful state of the Phillies' offense would have me seriously grumpy right now. As the Phils prepare to leave Miami and head for Atlanta, it sure doesn't seem as if they won the series, but they managed to take 2 of 3 from the equally offensively-challenged Marlins.

For the 4th time in six games, the Phils were shut out. Anibal Sanchez added his name this afternoon to the growing list of recent starting pitchers the Phillies couldn't touch. Jamie Moyer was the hard luck loser, allowing just a 6th inning run and surrendering 4 hits. The Phils managed just 4 hits - 2 of them from Shane Victorino - and they left 8 runners on base.

This has got to end right? The Phillies are too good a team to be this miserable at the plate.

#00: The Phils won after I decided to go with a baseball card of #0, Al Oliver, in a recent post. So I'll play the #00 card tonight with Rick White. White was picked from the scrap heap by the Phils in June 2006 after being waived by the Reds. He appeared in 38 games with a 4.34 ERA, but he was not invited back for the 2007 season. I know I'm safe using the picture featured on this 2006 Chachi card, as I'm the one who took it. This shot is from the Phillies on-field Photo Day event in July 2006.
