2012 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards - 2nd Edition

Number of Cards:  46
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  Full bleed photos are the focus of this card's minimalist design.  The player's name can be found at the bottom of each card, with his uniform number and position in one of the top corners on either side of a simple Phillies "P" logo.  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  I purchased the original 40-card second edition set at Citizens Bank Park on July 21, 2012.  I was impressed (and I'm still impressed) with the player selection and the actual thought that went into putting together a checklist for this second half set.  Here is my original post documenting the players added and subtracted from the 2012 first edition set.

Very late in the season, the Phillies released a second version of this set, adding the six cards featured in the Complete Update Checklist below and dropping the six cards for Joe Blanton, Mike Fontenot, Hunter Pence, Jason Pridie, Brian Sanches and Shane Victorino who had all left the team via trade or release.  This post discussed the discovery of these late season cards and this post documents the additions and subtractions to the set after I had acquired it in late October 2012.

Complete Standard Checklist (Unnumbered, presented here alphabetically with uniform number and position on the front of cards):

1. Antonio Bastardo (#37 - LHP)
2. Mick Billmeyer (#17 - CO)
3. Joe Blanton (#56 - RHP)
4. Jake Diekman (#63 - LHP)

11. Jeremy Horst (#47 - LHP)
12. Ryan Howard (#6 - 1B)
13. Kyle Kendrick (#38 - RHP)
14. Erik Kratz (#31 - C)
15. Cliff Lee (#33 - LHP)
16. Hector Luna (#29 - INF)
17. Pete Mackanin (#5 - CO)
18. Charlie Manuel (#41 - MG)
19. John Mayberry Jr. (#15 - OF)

37. Ty Wigginton (#24 - INF)
38. Vance Worley (#49 - RHP)

40. Phillies Broadcasters

Complete Update Checklist, 2nd Version:

1. Domonic Brown (#9 - OF)
2. Kevin Frandsen (#28 - INF)

3. Josh Lindblom (#43 - RHP)
4. Michael Martinez (#7 - INF)
5. B.J. Rosenberg (#53 - RHP)
6. Nate Schierholtz (#22 - OF)
One and Only Phillies Baseball Card (3):  Fontenot, Luna, Pridie
First Appearance in Phillies Team Issued Set (10):  Diekman, Frandsen, Horst, Kratz, Lindblom, Rosenberg, Sanches, Savery, Schierholtz, Valdes
Returning Players in Phillies Team Issued Set (24):  Bastardo, Blanton, Brown, Galvis, Halladay, Hamels, Howard, Kendrick, Lee, Martinez, Mayberry Jr., Nix, Papelbon, Pence, Pierre, Polanco, Rollins, Ruiz, Schneider, Schwimer, Utley, Victorino, Wigginton, Worley

It's extremely impressive (and surprising) that Pridie has a card in this set, as he appeared in just nine games with the Phillies in July.  Fontenot and Luna also receive their one and only Phillies baseball cards in this set.

Manager (1):  Manuel
Coaches (6):  Billmeyer, Dubee, Gross, Mackanin, Perlozzo, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1):  The Phanatic returns to the set after a one year absence.
Broadcasters (1):  After an absence in the first edition, the broadcasters get their own card in the second edition set.  Newcomer Gregg Murphy joins Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Gary Matthews, Chris Wheeler and Jim Jackson.

Omissions:  Pete Orr is the only real omission here, as he appeared in 35 games and didn't make it into either the first or second release of this set.  Orr was on the opening day roster, was sent down to the minors on June 6th and returned to the club on September 4th.

Variations/Rarities:  Fellow collectors Steve and Rick have been invaluable in helping me checklist the variations and rarities from this set.  There are at least 10 versions of these photo cards available with a Phillies logo on the back, and these cards were used primarily for the players to sign at various public appearances.  The photos for these variations are the same used for the regularly issued cards.  The list below might not be complete and we learned of new variations available as late as December 2019 when Rick attended the annual Phillies holiday sale and completely bought out the team's inventory of autographed photo cards for sale.

Additionally, the Phillies used this design to feature new players and coaches who joined the team during the 2012-2013 offseason.  These cards were presumably produced for the sole purpose of public appearances during the team's various winter caravan stops, and again there's only the Phillies script logo on the backs.

Phillies Logo Back
1. Mick Billmeyer (#17 - CO)

2. Rich Dubee (#30 - CO)
3. Kevin Frandsen (#28 - INF)
4. Erik Kratz (#31 - C)
5. Charlie Manuel (#41 - MG)
6. John Mayberry, Jr. (#15 - OF)
7. Laynce Nix (#19 - OF)
8. Jonathan Papelbon (#58 - RHP)
9. Sam Perlozzo (#2 - CO)
10. Carlos Ruiz (#51 - C)

Offseason Additions
1. Mike Adams (#37 - RHP)
2. Steve Henderson (#5 - CO)

3. Wally Joyner (#21 - CO)
4. John Lannan (#27 - LHP)
5. Rod Nichols (#54 - CO)
6. Ben Revere (#2 - CF)

Interestingly enough, all these variations/rarities cards have a 2013 copyright date on the backs (see below) and they're listed here with the 2012 set only because these cards use that set's design.  Revere was acquired from the Twins on December 6, 2012 and Adams was signed as a free agent on December 20, 2012.

This set was originally featured in a post back in January 2015, and I'm going to slowly go through some of these team issued set posts and update them with new information gleaned (if any) over the past five-plus years.

2012 Phillies Team Issue - 2nd Edition

I updated this post here in September 2020 and this original post is now outdated.

How Distributed:  I purchased the original 40-card second edition set at Citizens Bank Park on July 21st.  I was impressed (and I'm still impressed) with the player selection and actual thought that went into putting together a checklist for this second half set.  Here is my original post documenting the players added and subtracted from the first edition set.

Very late in the season, the Phillies released a second version of this set, adding the six cards featured in the Complete Update Checklist below and dropping the cards for Joe Blanton, Mike Fontenot, Hunter Pence, Jason Pridie, Brian Sanches and Shane Victorino who had all left the team via trade or release.  This post discussed the discovery of these late season cards and this post documents the additions and subtractions to the set after I had acquired it in late October 2012.

Complete Standard Checklist (40):  The cards are unnumbered, but I've presented them below ordered by uniform number.

  • 34 - Roy Halladay
  • 35 - Cole Hamels

  • 38 - Kyle Kendrick
  • 41 - Charlie Manuel MG
  • 44 - Michael Schwimer
  • 46 - Raul Valdes
  • 47 - Jeremy Horst
  • 48 - Brian Sanches
  • 49 - Vance Worley
  • 51 - Carlos Ruiz
  • 55 - Joe Savery
  • 56 - Joe Blanton
  • 58 - Jonathan Papelbon
  • 63 - Jake Diekman
  • Phillie Phanatic
  • Phillies Broadcasters
Complete Update Checklist (6):
One and Done (3):  Fontenot, Luna, Pridie
First Appearances (10):  Diekman, Frandsen, Horst, Kratz, Lindblom, Rosenberg, Sanches, Savery, Schierholtz, Valdes

It's extremely impressive (and surprising) that Pridie has a card in this set, as he appeared in just nine games with the Phillies in July.  Fontenot and Luna also receive their one and only Phillies baseball cards in this set.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Manager (1):  Manuel
Coaches (6):  Billmeyer, Dubee, Gross, Mackanin, Perlozzo, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1)
Broadcasters (1):  After an absence in the first edition, the broadcasters get their own card in the second edition set.  Newcomer Gregg Murphy joins Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Gary Matthews, Chris Wheeler and Jim Jackson
Commemorative Cards (0)

Variations/Rarities:  Steve F. has noted the existence of blank backed cards for Billmeyer, Dubee, Frandsen, Kratz, Manuel, Nix, Papelbon and Perlozzo.  These cards have the same photos as the regularly issued cards and contain a script Phillies logo on the back.  I added a Ruiz card to my collection in December 2017 containing just the Phillies logo on the back.  (A card exists for Mayberry, Jr. as well - see December 2019 update below.)

Wally Joyner joined the coaching staff following the 2012 season, and there's a card for him available which was presumably created for Joyner to sign during that offseason's winter caravan.  (An eBay auction for this card can currently be found here.)

In December 2015, I came across eBay auctions for John Lannan and Rod Nichols autographed cards, which share the same design and background as the Joyner card.
  • 2 - Ben Revere
  • 5 - Steve Henderson CO
  • 21 - Wally Joyner CO
  • 27 - John Lannan
  • 37 - Mike Adams
  • 54 - Rod Nichols CO
Update (December 2016) - A posed card for Mike Adams is also available.
Update (August 2019) - I came across an eBay auction featuring a posed card for Steve Henderson, who joined the Phillies coaching staff before the 2013 season.
Update (December 2019) - Fellow collector Rick found a Ben Revere posed photo card and a logo-backed John Mayberry, Jr. card at the annual Phillies holiday sale.

Trivia:  The Beckett online database omits this set and the first edition set.

2013 Phillies Team Issue 2 #5 Steve Henderson

Before we delve into reviewing the Phillies hitting coaches of the past four decades, I wanted to briefly comment on the ongoing playoffs.  For the record, I was hoping for a rematch of the very first World Series held 110 years ago in 1903 between the Boston Pilgrims and the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Cardinals dispatched the Pirates in five games in their N.L.D.S., so now I'm left rooting for whichever National League team would be easier for the Red Sox, and Shane Victorino, to beat in the World Series.  It's hard for me to root for the Dodgers however, so instead I'm just going to sit back and (unfortunately) relax for the second October in a row.

But on to matters concerning the Phillies, which is why you're here!  Hitting coach Steve Henderson will be back in 2014 and he hopes to continue the work he started in 2013.  If all goes according to plan, the annoying folks at Fox will be breaking in live during crucial N.L.C.S. action next fall to discuss with Henderson how he was able to work his magic and reboot the bats of Ryan Howard, Darin Ruf and Carlos Ruiz.

As far as I can tell, the Phillies didn't have an official hitting coach until Billy DeMars was given that title in 1980.  Prior to that, and according to the Phillies Yearbooks, DeMars served as the team's third base coach and hitting coach.  But he held the full-time hitting coach position for two years in 1980 and 1981.  Deron Johnson and Del Unser also had double duty as the team's first base coaches and hitting coaches between 1982 and 1987.

2013 Phillies Team
Issue 2 #21
Wally Joyner became the team's first official assistant hitting coach last season.  His time with the club lasted only a season, and Joyner will look to take on a full hitting coach position with another team in 2014.  I wonder how long it will be until there are assistant pitching coaches?  Here's the list of full and part-time hitting coaches for the Phillies since 1970:

Billy DeMars 1969-1981 - DeMars also served as first base coach (1969-1972) and third base coach (1972-1979)
Deron Johnson 1982-1984 - Johnson also served as first base coach during his coaching tenure
Del Unser 1985-1988 - Unser also served as first base coach (1985-1987)
Denis Menke 1989-1996
Hal McRae 1997-2000
Richie Hebner 2001
Greg Gross 2002-2004; 2011-2012
Milt Thompson 2005-2011

2013 Phillies Team Issue #33 Cliff Lee

Blue Jays 1, Phillies 0
Spring Training Game 33 - Friday Night, March 29th in Philadelphia
Record - 16-16-1

One Sentence Summary:  The offense stayed behind in Florida as the Blue Jays squeaked by the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, 1-0.

What It Means:  One more game to go, and then they all start to count.

What Went Wrong:  Phillippe Aumont allowed a first pitch home to J.P. Arencibia to start the fifth inning, and it was the only scoring by either team.  Cliff Lee pitched four scoreless innings and struck out five.

Featured Card:  I attended this game with my six-year-old son Doug (see Field Report below) and Doug walked to one of the Newstands with me to pick up a Media Guide, the Topps Phillies 17-card team set, and the first edition of the team-issued postcard-sized set.  Similar to the last few years, the photos in this initial series are all from Spring Training.

There are 41 cards in the set, and several Phillies (and non-Phillies) receive their first and possibly only Phillies cards.  Marking their Phillies cardboard debuts are Mike Adams, Yuniesky Betancourt (now with the Brewers), Ender Inciarte, John Lannan, Humberto Quintero and Delmon Young.  I'll have more on the 17-card Topps Phillies set in a future post.

Field Report:  Friend o' the blog Peter V. graciously gave us two tickets to last night's On-Deck Series game and we were happy to enjoy the game from his awesome seats in Section 138.  It turned out to be a fairly boring game, but Doug was happy to meet new Phillies coach Wally Joyner and former Phillie Tommy Greene prior to the game.  Joyner gave us coupons for a free hot dog and soda, while Greene signed a special Phillies Alumni card for Doug.  I also took a picture of new Phillie Ben Revere's giant 2011 Topps-style card in Ashburn Alley as part of the night's starting line-up.  (Michael Young had a Phillies card too, while Quintero was represented by the generic Citizens Bank Park card.)

It was cold, but Doug stayed warm by devouring a entire box of popcorn and waiting with his glove after every pitch for a foul ball.

2004 Topps Heritage #206 Michael Young

2004 Topps Heritage #206
The Phillies were a little late this year in assigning numbers to their new acquisitions, but I noticed yesterday on the Phillies website that all 60 players scheduled to be in camp this year now have uniform numbers next to their names.  In my mind, the assignment of new uniform numbers is the final milestone to reach prior to the official start of Spring Training.

As I did last year, here's a run-down of who will be wearing new numbers next week in Clearwater:

New Players
#2 Ben Revere - Revere wore #11 with the Twins.  As that number is currently taken by Jimmy Rollins, he's going with #2, worn last year by departed first base coach Sam Perlozzo.
#3 Delmon Young - Young gets a fresh start with Hunter Pence's old #3.  The outfielder had previously worn #21 with the Twins and Tigers.
#10 Michael Young - Young wore this number for a decade with the Rangers.  Juan Pierre wore the number last season for the Phillies.
#27 John Lannan - Lannan was #31 with the Nationals over the past four seasons, but Erik Kratz has that number with the Phils.  New Marlin Placido Polanco had been wearing #27.
#37 Mike Adams - For the second year in a row, Antonio Bastardo was coerced to give up his number to a more veteran pitcher.  Last year, he surrendered #58 to the newly acquired Jonathan Papelbon.  This year, Adams claimed his familiar #37 from Bastardo.
#43 Ender Inciarte - My guess is that Inciarte was just assigned the lowest number left over after the new veterans got their picks.  Josh Lindblom wore #43 last season.
#45 Chad Durbin - Durbin wore #37 during his first stint with the Phillies.  I wonder what made him choose #45, made famous by Tug McGraw, for this go round?  The Phillies haven't assigned #45 to anyone since Pedro Martinez wore it for part of the 2009 season.

1990 Topps #525
New Coaches
#5 Steve Henderson - The new hitting coach assumes former bench coach Pete Mackanin's old number.
#21 Wally Joyner - Joyner wore #21 during his formidable years with the Angels.  Former hitting coach Greg Gross wore the number last season.
#23 Ryne Sandberg - Sandberg made this number famous during his Hall of Fame career with the Cubs.  Brian Schneider's recent retirement made the number available - although I can't imagine Sandberg wearing any other number.
#54 Rod Nichols - The Phillies "unretired" Brad Lidge's #54 for their new bullpen coach.

New Numbers
#8 Juan Samuel - Samuel wore #12 during his first two years as a Phillies coach.  With Shane Victorino's depature last year, Samuel's old #8 was freed up so he made the switch.
#59 Antonio Bastardo - As discussed above, Bastardo's #59 is his third uniform number in three years.

2002 Topps Total #486
Other Stuff
- From 1 to 60, the following non-retired numbers are still available - #49, #56, #57.  These numbers were last worn by Vance Worley, Joe Blanton and David Herndon, respectively.

- New non-roster invitees receiving low numbers include catcher Humbero Quintero (#12), outfielder Joe Mather (#22), infielders Josh Fields (#24) and Yuniesky Betancout (#25) and pitchers Rodrigo Lopez (#16) and Aaron Cook (#29).  Veterans are typically saved the embarrassment of sporting numbers in the 60s and 70s.

- Outfielder Zach Collier wins the prize for the highest number with #80.  The last player I remember being in camp with a number that high was Chase Utley, back when he was a non-roster invitee in 2002.

1992 Pinnacle #284 - Dale Murphy & Wally Joyner

Last week, the Phillies named Wally Joyner their assistant hitting coach, rounding out their new and hopefully improved 2013 coaching staff.  Joyner will assist Steve Henderson as both former sluggers attempt to find a pulse from the Phillies aging offense.  A few random thoughts upon Joyner joining the Phils:

- I believe this "assistant hitting coach" position is relatively new in baseball, right?  I may have made this up, but I thought teams were only permitted to have six coaches in uniform.  So does the "assistant" tag mean that Joyner isn't officially a coach?

- I'm assuming Joyner will earn a card within the team's 2013 photo card set, but for now the card featured here is the sole Joyner card in my Phillies collection.

- Joyner will wear #21 with the Phillies.  During his best years,  from 1985 through 1991, he wore #21 with the California Angels.  That number was recently vacated by Greg Gross, the team's former hitting coach.

- Joyner's 1986 rookie cards were like gold back in the day.  The 13-year-old kid in me thinks it's awesome that Wally World is coming to Philly.
