1984 Tastykake Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  47
Card Size:  3 1/2" x 5 1/4"

Description:  The 1984 Tastykake photo card set got a little more ambitious than its predecessor by adding cards for all the coaches and a broadcaster card.  The fronts are nearly identical to the 1983 set, with the exception of the Phillies script logo added to the top.  The photographer also requested that everyone remove their hats for this set, which was unfortunate for some of the subjects and is reminiscent of the 1976 team-issued photo card set.  The backs of the cards feature a facsimile autograph of the player, coach or manager, and some of the cards include words of encouragement.

I really wish the Phillies had chosen, "Wherever you go, there you are" for the back of Larry Andersen's card.

How Distributed:  All fans 14 and under attending the Phillies game at Veterans Stadium on April 21, 1984, received a complete 40-card set, shrink-wrapped and containing a logo/checklist card on the top.  The back of the logo/checklist card advertised that additional sets could be purchased from the Phillies via mail order for $3.

There are also 7 somewhat rare "update" cards available, and by all accounts at least three of these cards were never released to the general public, at least not in very large quantities.  Here's a verbatim report from a reliable hobby source on the origins of these 7 cards:

"That set was a mess from day 1.  We obtained some uncut sheets from the printer right off the bat.  When the team started selling the shrink wrapped sets, we found that the seven players on one side of the sheets were not included.  I called a friend in the PR dept and asked him what was going on.  He was upset that we’d obtained the sheets and explained that they knew that prospects would be called up from the minors during the season and wanted to avoid making special print runs in order to have pictures for them.  So they picked 7 prominent players and filled out the sheet with their pictures.  When I spoke to him, all the cut cards were in stacks in a back store room.  He was concerned that, if word got out as to which 7 they picked, other players would be upset at not having been included.  As the season went on, I believe that they pulled and used the pictures for Carman, Russell, Stone and Wehrmeister but not for Daulton, Fireovid and Jeltz.  In speaking with the PR guy at the end of the season, he asked what I thought he should do with the supplies of the last three.  I told him I’d deep-six them as they hadn’t been “issued”.  They [the Phillies] ended up selling a bunch of the entire run to a dealer up around, I think, Wilkes Barre.  I believe he sold them as separate “extension” sets for a while."

Fellow collector Steve sent me the scan of the uncut sheet shown here, showing the 7 "update" cards in the far right column.  I'm calling these update cards, but they could just as easily be labelled as unreleased rarities.

Surprises:  Knowing what I know now about the genesis of the 7 update cards, the Phillies PR department did a great job of predicting future roster additions.  Only Darren Daulton didn't see playing time with the club in 1984.  The set contains the entire 25-man opening day roster, plus pitcher Tony Ghelfi who started the season on the disabled list and Marty Bystrom who began the season with Triple-A Portland.

Omissions:  Minor leaguers who would ultimately appear with the Phillies in 1984 who could have received consideration for the update set are Francisco Melendez, Mike Lavalliere and Rick Schu.  And for completists, the Phillies added four players from outside their organization throughout the season - Jim Kern, Shane Rawley, Al Oliver and Renie Martin.  Kern and Martin would never receive actual Phillies baseball cards.

Variations/Rarities:  Again, the 7 update cards could easily appear here as they're not technically true update cards and they're not readily available.

1987 Tastykake Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Description:  With the exception of the copyright date on the bottom right, these photo cards are identical in design to the sets issued in 1985 and 1986.  Fronts feature a full color picture and the backs include brief biographical notes on each player.

How Distributed:  All fans attending the Sunday, April 12th Phillies game at Veterans Stadium received the original 47-card set.  The four blank-backed update cards (I believe) were sold separately at the stadium late in the season.  I have a very vague recollection of purchasing the four photo card update set for $1 at a second half game.  Lee Elia was named the new Phillies manager on June 18th following the firing of John Felske.  The others featured in the update set made their Phillies debuts in May or June, as follows:  Wally Ritchie - May 1st, Keith Hughes - May 19th and Jeff Calhoun - June 16th.  Given those debuts, I would guess the update cards were available during the second half of the season, following the All-Star break.

Surprises:  There are a couple of things with this set only a few of us would find interesting.  As far as I can tell, this is the first team-issued photo card set featuring solo cards of players who never actually played for the Phillies.  Joe Cipolloni, Jim Olander, Bob Scanlan and Len Watts never got the call to the big leagues with the team, nor did the four prospects featured on the multi-player cards for that matter.  Marvin Freeman and Ronn Reynolds appear in the set as well, although neither played with the Phillies in 1987.  Freeman's season was hampered by injuries and he appeared in 19 minor league games.  Reynolds was dealt to the Astros on April 2nd for Calhoun.

There are two #39's in the set - Scanlan and Joe Cowley.  Scanlan started the spring with #39 and Cowley most likely requested the number upon his arrival from the White Sox late in the spring on March 26th.  Cowley had worn #40 with the White Sox, but that number already belonged to Steve Bedrosian.

Omissions:  None!  Every single player to appear with the Phillies in 1987 is represented in this set, and that's really impressive.

Variations/Rarities:  There's a Phanatic photo variation featuring the mascot riding his ATV, and a variation of the widely available Phanatic card but with different writing on the back.  There's also a black and white portrait version of a Don Carman card and fellow collector Bill W. e-mailed me to let me know the card was available at a Pennsylvania baseball card show in 1987 where Carman was an autograph guest.

1985 Game 77 - 1985 Tastykake Phillies #15 Don Carman

Game 77 - Friday Night, July 5th in Philadelphia
Record - 35-42, 5th Place, 10 1/2 games behind the Cardinals

One Sentence Summary:  A four-run 7th inning, capped by a two-run home run from John Russell gave the Phillies a 5-2 come from behind win against the Reds.

What It Means:  The Phillies continued to play good baseball and they were now only seven games below an even .500.  However, the team would continue to take almost equal steps forward and backward throughout July, ultimately finishing the month nine games below .500 and 15 1/2 games behind the top spot in the division.

What Happened:  Trailing 2-1, the Phillies mounted a four-run rally following the 7th inning stretch.  Mike Schmidt started the seventh with a single off Reds' starter Tom Browning and came home to score and tie the game when Glenn Wilson doubled.  Ozzie Virgil reached on an error by third baseman Nick Esasky, with Wilson scoring in the process.  Russell followed that a few batters later with his two-run home run.  Schmidt had two hits in this game, including a solo home run in the first, and improved his average to .240.

Jerry Koosman pitched well (6 2/3 innings, two runs) but came away with a no decision.  Larry Andersen was the beneficiary of the win with Don Carman recording his third save after two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.  Carman got pinch-hitter Pete Rose to fly out to right for the final out.

Featured Card:  I feel Carman's performance this season has been often overlooked, so I'll give him the card here.  Following this outing, Carman's ERA was down to 1.76 for the season and he was clearly one of manager John Felske's most reliable relievers.

1985 Game 54 - 1985 Fleer Update #U-20 Don Carman

Game 54 - Monday Night, June 10th in Philadelphia
Record - 20-34, 5th Place, 14 1/2 games behind the Cubs

One Sentence Summary:  Glenn Wilson continued to swing a hot bat and John Denny turned in another solid pitching performance as the Phillies downed the Mets, 6-4.

What It Means:  The Mets had been in first place the last time these two teams faced off back in May, but they had gone 12-13 since then and dropped into second place, three games behind the Cubs.

What Happened:  The Phils plated solo runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings before a 3-run seventh put them ahead 6-0.  Wilson tripled home Rick Schu and Juan Samuel, and he in turn was brought home on an RBI-single from Garry Maddox.  Denny went eight strong innings, allowing a run on seven hits before yielding to the bullpen.

Don Carman suffered through his worst outing of the year, allowing three Mets runs to score in the ninth.  His ERA jumped more than a run from 1.23 to 2.35.

Featured Card:  I admittedly don't remember Carman as one of the team's most effective relievers, but he was definitely that during the 1985 season.  Carman made 71 appearances, all in relief, and had a fantastic 2.08 ERA for the year.  He'd receive his first mainstream baseball cards in the Fleer Update and Topps Traded sets.

Game 128 - 1980 TCMA Peninsula Pilots Color #25 Ray Borucki

Game 128 - Friday Night, August 24th in Toronto
Record - 69-59, 2nd place, 3 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Missed chances and a pair of home runs allowed by Jake Arrieta led to this latest loss, 4-2 to the Blue Jays.

What It Means:  The Phillies are making me cranky.

What Happened:  The offense went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.  With the tying run on base in the 9th, Ken Giles struck out Cesar Hernandez swinging and Rhys Hoskins looking to end the game.  Scott Kingery hit his 7th home run in the 7th and his 2 for 3 night raised his average to .229.

Arrieta threw six innings, allowing all four runs on six hits.

Featured Cards:  Jays' starting pitcher Ryan Borucki pitched 6 1/3 innings and won his third game of the year.  Borucki's father Ray played five seasons in the minors for the Phillies between 1979 and 1983, giving me an excuse to pull his card from the 1980 TCMA Peninsula Pilots (Color) set for this post.  Ray Borucki made it up to Triple-A Oklahoma City in 1982, but he never advanced to the big leagues.

The Pilots were a Class A affiliate of the Phillies between 1976 and 1985.  The 1980 club had a big year with a record of 100-40 and eventually winning the Carolina League championship over the Durham Bulls.  Beckett's database notes that 2,500 color team sets were produced and there's also a rarer black and white team set of which only 1,100 sets were produced.  The color team set was sponsored by Burger King while Pepsi sponosored the black and white team set.

Within the 27-card color team set are four players who would eventually make it to the Majors:  Don Carman (1983-1992), Wil Culmer (1983), Julio Franco (1982-2007) and Roy Smith (1984-1991).  Culmer and Smith were traded to the Indians in September 1982 for John Denny, while Franco was one of five players swapped to Cleveland in December 1982 for Von Hayes.

One time Phillies coaches Bob Tiefenauer (1979) and Bill Dancy (2005-2006) are also in the set, as is the Pilots' general manager Bob Neal along with his fantastic, era-appropriate checkered sport coat.

Game 105 - Friday Night, July 29th in Atlanta
Record - 47-58, 4th place, 15 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jared Eickhoff allowed four home runs and relievers Severino Gonzalez and Colton Murray poured gasoline on this dumpster fire of a game as the Phillies lost, 15-2.

What It Means:  Well that escalated quickly.

What Happened:  Until the train went completely off the tracks in the seventh inning, Eickhoff had allowed just three hits but all three were solo home runs.  Gonzalez (2/3 inning, 3 hits, 2 walks and 5 runs) and Murray (1/3 inning, 4 hits and 3 runs) made sure the game was completely out of reach.

Featured Card:  As we were driving home, Scott Franzke relayed that Eickhoff was the first Phillies pitcher to surrender four home runs but only three earned runs since Don Carman in 1987.  Eickhoff should have been out of the seventh, but Maikel Franco booted what should have been the third out of the inning.  The next batter, Jordy Mercer, hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run and all three runs were unearned.

Field Report:  Jenna and I were at this game along with a few thousand fellow Phillies and Pirates fans.  As expected, we had plenty of leg room and we mercifully left the ballpark after Mercer's home run.  We were both disappointed to see that Roman Quinn has not yet been given a giant Topps baseball card in the starting line-up display in Ashburn Alley.

Long-time readers of this blog are familiar with the past generosity of reader Burnell, a fellow Phillies baseball card collector.  Burnell has previously send me the scans from 2015 Topps Bunt seen here, and he is also responsible for my 1975 Topps Mini Phillies team set.  I believe the first package I ever received from him contained an awesome assortment of oddball, autograph and relic Phillies cards from 1965 to 2006.

Recently, Burnell e-mailed to ask me if I was still in need of the Topps Stickers Phillies team sets from the mid-1980s through 1990.  I responded that I definitely still needed these elusive Phillies "cards" since single stickers from these sets are rarely seen for sale, and the multi-player stickers make collating complete team sets a challenge.  He e-mailed me back that he (a) had complete team sticker sets to send my way, (b) he was adding in "a few other cards" from my want lists and (c) he didn't need anything in return.

Burnell's package arrived last week and here's a rundown of the sticker portion of the bounty:

1985 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 16 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.

1987 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 12 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  I was also happy to add a never before seen (by me) Kent Tekulve Phillies sticker.

1988 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 13 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the three Phillies Super Star Stickercards which were used as backing for the stickers.

1989 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 11 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the Juan Samuel Super Star Stickercard which was used as backing for the stickers.

1990 Topps Stickers (entire Phillies team set) - Included all 11 stickers featuring Phillies including the multi-player stickers.  Also included the Von Hayes Super Star Stickercard which was used as backing for the stickers.

But wait, there's more!  I'm still in the process of sorting and crossing off the stacks of other Phillies cards Burnell sent me, most of which are of the relic or autograph variety.  There's a preview of what else was in the package in the photo above along with the stack of the complete run of Phillies from the Topps Stickers sets from 1985 to 1990.  I don't want to rush through these cards, so I'll have a future post (or two) showing off the newest additions to my collection thanks to Burnell's generosity.
