Record - 7-11, 4th Place, 7 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Bailey Falter pitched well but the Phillies were nearly no-hit in this 3-0 loss in the second game of Tuesday's double header.

What It Means:  There's one more game on Wednesday afternoon against the White Sox before the Phillies head home for seven games with the Rockies and Mariners.

What Happened:  Falter's only mistake came in the first inning when Jake Burger hit a three-run home run.  He'd settle down after that, pitching seven innings and allowing only three hits in total.  The White Sox pitching was better.  Starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and reliever Kendall Graveman combined for seven no-hit innings.  In the eighth, with Aaron Bummer on the mound, Brandon Marsh led off with a double to left for the team's only hit of the game.

Featured Card:  Old friend Adam Haseley made a brief appearance in this game for the White Sox, entering in right field in the eighth and moving to left field in the ninth.  Haseley has spent much of the past two season with the Charlotte Knights, the White Sox top farm club.  At the end of spring training last year, Haseley was dealt to the White Sox with the Phillies getting reliever McKinley Moore in return.

Transaction:  Following the game, Yunior Marte (rhp) was returned to Lehigh Valley.

One Sentence Summary:  Phillies pitchers took a beating in this 14-2 drubbing by the Yankees in Tampa.

What It Means:  I know this is a shortened exhibition season, and I've been on the couch sick for half these games, but I'm ready for spring training to end and for the regular season to begin.  Let's go.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola threw 60 pitches in his four innings of work, allowing four runs on five hits, including another home run.  Relievers Nick Duron and Brian Marconi combined to allow eight Yankees runs in the eighth inning.  The Phillies offense had six hits, including a Matt Vierling double.  Four of his six hits this spring are the extra-base variety.

Camp Head Count:  43 - 1 = 42

Before the start of this game, the Phillies traded Adam Haseley (of) to the Chicago White Sox for minor leaguer McKinley Moore (rhp).  Haseley's departure is bittersweet as the former #1 pick never came close to reaching his potential while with the club and I'm hoping a fresh start in Chicago is just what he needs.  In parts of three seasons with the Phillies, Haseley appeared in 116 games and batted .264 with five home runs and 39 RBIs.  He was the team's opening day center fielder last season.

It doesn't appear as if Moore has appeared on any readily available baseball cards to date.

One Sentence Summary:  The slumping Phillies offense continued to be on display as the Mets easily won, 5-1.

What It Means:  The Good Phight used one word to sum up their game summary post:  Sadness.  Weather permitting, they'll try to avoid a four-game sweep this afternoon with Jacob deGrom on the mound for the Mets.

What Happened:  Zack Wheeler deserved better.  After struggling in the first and allowing a pair of Mets runs, Wheeler settled in and battled through the next five-plus innings.  David Peterson and three Mets relievers held the Phillies to three hits, including a solo home run from Jean Segura.  The Phillies offense struck out an inexcusable 14 times, looking lost at times at the plate.

Featured Card/Transaction:  Prior to the game, Mickey Moniak (of) was recalled from the alternate training site and Adam Haseley (of) was placed on the restricted list for personal reasons.  It was announced Haseley had left the team.  I wish nothing but good things for Haseley and I hope he sorts out whatever it is that caused him to make this move.

Spring Training Game 1 - 2020 Topps Finest Flashbacks #150 Adam Haseley

Spring Training Game 1 - Sunday Afternoon, February 28th in Lakeland
Record - 0-1

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies were trounced by the Tigers in their 2021 spring training debut, dropping this game by a score of 10-2.

What It Means:  After a particularly tough winter and what seemed like a small eternity since the Phillies last played enjoyable baseball, we'll need to wait a little longer for the Phillies to play enjoyable baseball.  Still, on a rainy and dreary Sunday in February, it was wonderful to be able to listen to this game via the Tigers' radio broadcast.

What Happened:  Phillies starting pitcher Ivan Nova was ineffective and didn't last through the first inning.  Nova, relievers Jonathan Hennigan and JD Hammer combined to throw 1 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 8 runs on 8 walks.  Four Tigers runs scored on bases loaded walks.  On the plus side, reliever Bryan Mitchell threw two scoreless innings and struck out 3.  The offense couldn't get much going against the Tigers, tallying only four hits.

Featured Card:  One of the few highlights in this game for the Phillies was the lead-off opposite-field home run hit by Adam Haseley on the second pitch thrown of the spring.  With the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, I didn't get a chance to feature many 2020 baseball cards so I'll try to make up for that this spring.  This is Haseley's card from the 1993-inspired Topps Finest Flashbacks set, released last July.

Camp Head Count:  72 - 1 + 2 = 73 - Just like everything else, this year's spring training is a little different with Covid protocols limiting the number of overall players in camp.  To explain my math here, the Phillies started out with 40 players on their 40-man roster on February 17th, 13 non-roster invitees and 19 mini-camp invitees.  These mini-camp invitees are minor league players who will be training at the minor league facilities but will be available for the exhibition games.  It's possible, but not likely, any of the mini-camp players could ultimately make the big club for opening day.

So we start with 72, with Seranthony Dominguez being placed on the injured list (minus one), infielder Brad Miller officially signed (plus one) and prospect Luis Garcia added to the mini-camp roster on February 22nd (plus one).

Game 3 - 2020 Topps Road to Opening Day #OD-282 Adam Haseley

Record - 1-2, Tied for 3rd Place, 1 game behind the Braves and Marlins

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies lost in ugly fashion to the Marlins, 11-6.

What It Means:  Not great.  Needing to get off to a fast start, dropping the opening series to the Marlins isn't going to help.  The Marlins were even playing without several key players too, as reportedly at least four of their everyday starters are now out with COVID-related issues.  And it won't get easier as the Phillies now face off against the Yankees for their next four games.

What Happened:  Vince Velasquez, who looked great at times throughout spring training/summer camp, looked awful in his first start of 2020.  He departed with a line of 3 innings pitched, 4 runs on 3 hits including a pair of home runs.  Cole Irvin didn't fare much better getting tagged for 4 runs on 5 hits in his inning of work.  Reggie McClain allowed a three-run home run to Brett Anderson and Nick Pivetta gave up a solo home run (a bomb) to former Phillie Corey Dickerson for good measure.

2020 Chachi Almost #9

The Phillies offense managed to leave the bases loaded in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, going 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position.  On a positive note, Bryce Harper hit his first home run of the season in the first.

Featured Card:  Another positive note is the four-hit game turned in by Adam Haseley, the first of his career.  In his first start of the season, Haseley led off and went 4 for 6.

Transaction:  Robert Stock, designated for assignment when his roster spot was needed prior to the start of the season, was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon.  The Phillies had claimed him off waivers in October and at one point he seemed a lock for the Phillies' bullpen.

Game 146 - 2019 Chachi Photo Cards #40 Adam Haseley

Game 146 - Thursday Night, September 12th in Philadelphia
Record - 76-70, Tied for 3rd place, 14 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Paced by four home runs, the offense came to life in this 9-5 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies are still somehow hanging around the Wild Card race and after a rare Friday off day, they'll open a quick two game series at home on Saturday night against the Red Sox.

What Happened:  Cesar Hernandez (11), Adam Haseley (5), Jean Segura (12) and J.T. Realmuto (25) all homered.  Hernandez added an RBI single in the sixth and Sean Rodriguez cushioned the lead with an RBI double in the eighth.  The hodge podge bullpen did its job again once starter Drew Smyly departed after four innings.  Jared Hughes pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the win while Hector Neris recorded the final four outs for his 26th save.

Featured Card:  It was Haseley's home run in the second that put the Phillies ahead for good, and he also made another impressive catch in center field.  Since the Phillies didn't create a photo card for Haseley this year, I took matters into my own hands and created the card shown here.  Fellow collector Rick was then gracious enough to have it signed for me (along with one for himself) and I'm very happy to have this autographed card of the young Phillies outfield in my collection.

Field Report:  Doug and I attended this game and we were thrilled to be able to go down on the field for a pregame ceremony to recognize the sponsors at this year's ALS Phestival.  This is the third year in a row we've been able to do this, and I hope the streak continues for many more years.  The highlight for Doug was fist-bumping Neris as we were leaving the field, and he also got a few "what's up buddy" from Edgar Garcia, coach Dusty Wathan and Brad Miller.

Game 138 - 2019 Grandstand Reading Fightin Phils Update #17 Adam Haseley

Record - 72-66, 3rd place, 13 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola had an uncharacteristically shaky outing and the Phillies couldn't completely overcome an early deficit in this 8-5 loss.

What It Means:  With 25 games remaining in the regular seasons, every game presents a must-win situation.  The Phillies couldn't get the job done on Wednesday night, even with their ace on the mound.

What Happened:  Nola lasted four innings and left having given up five runs on five hits and three walks.  Home runs from Logan Morrison (2), J.T. Realmuto (21) and Jay Bruce (25) resulted in the game being tied, 5-5, heading to the bottom of the seventh.  But Jose Alvarez allowed a solo home run to Jose Iglesias to untie the game and then Blake Parker surrendered a two-run home run to relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen in the eighth.

Featured Card:  It could have been worse if not for an over-the-wall catch made by Adam Haseley in the eighth to bring back a home run off the bat of Freddy Galvis.  It was an amazing catch, completely downplayed by the low-key Haseley.  We'll be seeing that play on highlight reels for years, and I just wish the catch could have come during a game the Phillies won.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies rode a four-run seventh inning to a come from behind 7-6 win over the Dodgers, splitting the four game series.

What It Means:  Hard to believe as bad as the Phillies lost in a few of these games they ended up splitting the series.  The team heads to Pittsburgh next for a weekend series with the Pirates.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola was victimized by three Dodgers home runs before departing after five innings.  In the seventh, trailing 5-3, big singles from Jean Segura, Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins put the Phillies ahead 7-5.  Hector Neris felt the need to allow a solo home run to Alex Verdugo in the ninth before recording the final out and his 18th save.

Featured Card:  Adam Haseley will get some playing time with Jay Bruce on the injured list and he hit his first career home run in the second inning.  He received a Topps Now card back in June to celebrate his first big league hit.

Field Report:  Jenna and Ben were two of the brave souls who endured the excessive heat warning to take in a portion of this game.  Their official report: "It was hot," even in the shade provided by Harry the K's.


Transactions:  Fernando Salas and Cole Irvin joined the bullpen from Lehigh Valley while Austin Davis and Edgar Garcia were sent back down.

Annual Post-Vacation Game Summary Catch-Up, Part 3 of 10

One Sentence Summary:  Vince Velasquez was knocked around in his start and the offense provided only four hits in this 6-2 loss to the Marlins.

What It Means:  Maybe it's not the lucky bamboo, and the Mets are just a bad team.

What Happened:  Ironically enough, Velasquez provided all the offense for the Phillies, hitting a two-run home run in the fifth.  On the mound, he allowed four runs on six hits over just 4 1/3 innings.

Featured Card:  I thought this was cool.  Mike Drago Tweeted the below photo of the last four top draft picks for the Phillies who were all in the line-up for the Reading Fightin Phils on Thursday night.  Cornelius Randolph (2015), Mickey Moniak (2016), the recently promoted Alec Bohm (2018) and Adam Haseley (2017) on a rehab assignment.

Bohm, the team's future third baseman, homered in his first game with Reading, joining Mike Schmidt and Scott Rolen who also homered in their first games with the Double-A squad.  Bohm will represent the Phillies at this year's Futures Game in Cleveland.

Transactions:  Reliever Tommy Hunter was activated from the 60-day IL and Fernando Salas was designated for assignment to free up a spot for Hunter on the 40-man roster.  Salas pitched 1 inning in his short tenure with the Phillies, giving up 3 hits and a home run.  He seems destined for a future Chachi Missing Links card.  Haseley was also activated from the IL and optioned to Lehigh Valley.

On Thursday afternoon, we attended the annual Phillies Phestival, which raises money in the fight against ALS.  One of my collecting regrets (and a regret as a lifelong Phillies fan) is that we never even considered going to this event until three years ago.  As rookies in 2017, we meandered through the ballpark using our pre-assigned autograph tickets and paying cash for autographs when the lines died down.  In 2018, I attended the event on behalf of my employer, which unbeknownst to me, had been a long-time sponsor of the Phestival.  I became involved with the Philadelphia ALS Chapter over the past few years partly in tribute to our friend Bob who passed away in January 2019 after a courageous battle with the disease.  I'm looking forward to continuing (and increasing) my involvement in the coming years.

This year, we again attended as sponsors and it's the first year we were fully prepared to collect autographs as efficiently as possible while still having fun.  Sponsors are given a button to wear, which allows us to stand in any autograph line.  Within the sponsors packet were explicit instructions informing us we couldn't go to the front of any line, which makes complete sense, and that we couldn't go to the Bryce Harper photo booth.

Similar to the past two years, I created a special set of Chachi cards to commemorate our day and the autographs we hunted down.  Here's a summary of what and how we did:

• The sponsors assemble in the Diamond Club and my company's name was called around 2:45.  We made our way down to the field to meet with Phil Gosselin and Jay Bruce who would be signing autographs at our designated station.  I let Bruce know it was great not to boo him this season, and my son Doug talked to Gosselin about their mutual history with the All-Star Baseball Academy.  Gosselin is an alumni and Doug is currently on one of their travel teams.

• We had a plan.  Doug and I took the left side of the ballpark while Jenna and Ben took the right side.  Doug and I started in the Hall of Fame Club, where the lines were very short to start and some of the tables had no lines.  We walked right into the suite where Gabe Kapler was signing and had two people in front of us.  Kapler's a fascinating guy.  Very intense, very polite, very engaging and he made his hat work.

• Jenna and Ben made Aaron Nola their first target, so they had a longer wait to get started.  Doug and I had cleared four tables by the time they were getting Nola's autographs.

• All the players were engaging and friendly, and even though there was a loose "no posed photographs" policy in place this year, pretty much everyone stopped to look and smile while we were taking pictures.  Rhys Hoskins said he remembered being in our Christmas card, although he may have just been being polite.

• Ben's highlight was getting Maikel Franco to sign the back of his favorite Franco t-shirt.  He also talked to the broadcast team for awhile.  When he asked why they didn't have any cards to sign, Scott Franzke said it was because the Phillies couldn't get them all together at the same time.  He was then invited by Ben Davis to sign their table cloth, and he obliged.

• Larry Andersen had run out of photo cards by the time we got to his station (with John Kruk and Mickey Morandini) so he offered Doug a cookie instead of an autograph.  Doug took him up on the offer.

• I was bummed that none of the newer Phillies players had any photo cards produced for them to sign.  I had come prepared with a list of potential exclusive photo cards - Bruce, Edgar Garcia, JD Hammer, Adam Haseley and Ranger Suarez - but there were no new cards to be had.  Bruce and Gosselin had what looked like regular paper at their station with their names printed at the top.

• When the autograph session time expired, we had visited all but three tables - J.T. Realmuto (by choice since we had already received his autographs in May), Charlie Manual (since we forgot to bring anything for him to sign) and Pat Neshek/Jim Gott.  The Neshek/Gott omission was a symptom of simply running out of time.  The only table we doubled up on was Scott Kingery's as we both had time to visit with him as the clock was ticking down.

• We met up with fellow collector Steve and his son in time to stand in line for our mystery grab bags.  Our five bag haul was decent, with baseballs signed by Roman Quinn (two), Nick Pivetta, and Hector Neris.  We received a pair of Raul Ibanez bobble heads, three solar Liberty Bells, a Jimmy Rollins World Series ring and Jenna got her Mother's Day fleece she had wanted from the May giveaway.

We had a blast, the Phillies raised over $768,000 to aid in the fight against ALS, and we're already making our plans for next year's Phestival!  I've share Part 2 with the rest of the cards from the event in a post coming soon.

Game 62 - 2019 Topps Pro Debut #82 Adam Haseley

Phillies 7, Padres 5
Game 62 - Wednesday Afternoon, June 5th in San Diego
Record - 35-27, 1st place, 1 game ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Hector Neris locked down a five-out save and Adam Haseley drove home the go-ahead run with his first Major League hit in this exciting 7-5 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies went 2-4 on this west coast swing, and now they'll pick it up again on Friday night with a three-game series against the Reds, currently in last place in the N.L. Central.  I'm still not over the loss of Andrew McCutchen for the season.

What Happened:  Haseley doubled home Scott Kingery in the eighth to break a 5-5 tie.  An inning before, Haseley scored on a triple from Cesar Hernandez, Bryce Harper doubled Hernandez home and Jean Segura singled Harper home to tie the game.  Kingery had doubled in the second to start the scoring and Jay Bruce homered again, his third with the Phillies, in the fourth.

Jake Arrieta didn't survive the fifth.  His final line wasn't pretty, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in his 4 2/3 inning outing.  Neris was electric, getting out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth with the help of a fine defensive play from Segura.  Neris closed out the ninth to collect his 12th save.

Featured Card:  Haseley will start to get his share of baseball cards, but for now his 2019 cards can be found in the Bowman and Topps Pro Debut releases.

First Visit to FNB Field, Home of the Harrisburg Senators

While the Phillies were getting destroyed in Milwaukee (see below), we took a two-hour drive along I-76 to Harrisburg for our first official visit to FNB Field, home of the Harrisburg Senators.  The Senators are the Eastern League, Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.  Our first attempt to attend a Senators game was rained out in mid-April, so for this return trip we were treated to a double header against the Phillies Double-A affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.

We have yet to have a bad minor league ballpark experience, and this was another fantastic venue.  I strategically selected seats behind the Fightin Phils dugout on the third base side and Doug added autographs of several Phillies prospects to his card collection both before and between games.  Top prospects Adam Haseley and Cornelius Randolph were repeat signers and he also added autographs on the cards of Mickey Moniak and Arquimedes Gamboa.

For any players without readily available cards in his collection, or if the players came over more than once, he obtained signatures on Eastern League baseballs.  He had two baseballs to fill with signatures and the willing signers were coaches Tyler Henson and Nelson Prada, catcher Austin Bossart, pitcher Aaron Brown, infielders Gamboa, Jose Gomez, Darrick Hall and Luke Williams, and outfielders Haseley, Moniak and Randolph.

Nationals prospect Bryan Mejia was signing before the first game from a seat in Section 106, and Ben effortlessly added his autograph to his collection.  Ben's autograph hunting is limited to opportunities requiring minimal effort, which is the way I was in my younger days as well.  The Fightin Phils players liberally tossed baseballs into the stands after the bottom of each inning, and we caught balls tossed by Adonis Medina and Austin Listi.


Towards the end of the second game, and completely out of the blue, a ball rolled over the Fightin Phils' dugout roof and landed at my feet.  We were pleasantly surprised to see the ball had been signed by most of the Reading roster in a red sharpie!  Doug has catalogued the signatures and the ball was signed by the following players:  Bossart, Brown, Bailey Falter, Hall, Haseley, Henri Latrigue, Mauricio Llovera, Listi, Medina, Moniak, Randolph, Raul Rivas and Ramon Rosso.  How cool is that!

While the autograph additions were awesome, we also witnessed a double header sweep by the Fightin Phils.  Medina won the first game thanks in part to home runs from Hall and Josh Stephen.  Jose Taveras was masterful on the mount in the second game, throwing five innings of shutout ball in his first Double-A start.  Gamboa went 4 for 7 in the twinbill with two doubles and a triple.

Meanwhile, in Milwaukee . . .

Game 53 - Sunday Afternoon, May 26th in Milwaukee
Record - 31-22, 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Brandon Woodruff shut down the Phillies offense and added a pair of RBI hits in this 9-1 loss to the Brewers.

What It Means:  The Phillies finished a tough seven-game road trip against the Cubs and Brewers with a respectable record of 4-3.

What Happened:  The only Phillies hit in this game was a solo home run from Andrew Knapp (1) in the sixth.  Zach Eflin departed after 3 2/3 innings having allowed three runs on six hits.  Vince Velasquez was knocked around in his second relief outing, giving up four runs on five hits in just 2/3 of an inning.  JD Hammer made his big league debut, pitching a scoreless sixth inning.
