2025 Chachi #48 David Robertson

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  5'11"  Weight:  195
Opening Day 2025 Age:  39
Born:  April 9, 1985, Birmingham, AL
Acquired:  Signed as a free agent with the Phillies, July 21, 2025
Departed:  Granted free agency, November 2, 2025
Major League Teams:  New York Yankees 2008-14; Chicago White Sox 2015-17; New York Yankees 2017-18; Philadelphia Phillies 2019; Tampa Bay Rays 2021; Chicago Cubs 2022; Philadelphia Phillies 2022; New York Mets 2023; Miami Marlins 2023; Texas Rangers 2024; Philadelphia Phillies 2025
Postseason Appearances:  New York Yankees 2009-12, 2017-18; Tampa Bay Rays 2021; Philadelphia Phillies 2022; Miami Marlins 2023; Philadelphia Phillies 2025

When David Robertson took the mound for the Phillies on August 11th, he joined Chuck Klein and Bill Hallman as only the third player to appear with the team in three different stints.  Robertson provided some veteran dependability to the bullpen, appearing in 20 games and going 2-0 with a 4.08 ERA and a pair of saves in 17 2/3 innings pitched.  Unfortunately, the last memory I'll have of him is causing trouble in the seventh inning of NLDS Game 1, departing with a pair of runners on, who would both score on a Kiké Hernandez three-run home run.  That would be Robertson's last big league appearance in a career that spanned 17 seasons, as he announced his retirement from baseball the day I composed this post.

NLDS Game 1 - Offense, Bullpen Stumble in Loss to Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers  5
Philadelphia Phillies  3

Saturday Night, October 4th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
Dodgers lead series, 1-0

One Sentence Summary:  The top of the Phillies line-up was 1 for 11 with six strikeouts, while David Robertson and Matt Strahm couldn't contain the Dodgers in the seventh inning in this gut-wrenching 5-3 loss to the Dodgers in Game 1.

What It Means:  Emphasis on gut-wrenching.

What Happened:  Game 1 starter Christopher Sanchez was locked in until the sixth inning, allowing one hit, a walk and a hit batter through the first five.  In the bottom of the second, the fans got their only real chance to go wild when Alec Bohm drew a lead-off walk, Brandon Marsh singled to center and J.T. Realmuto tripled to the center field wall on a ball Teoscar Hernandez seemed uninterested in cutting off.  Harrison Bader next just missed a home run, settling for a sacrifice fly to score Realmuto. That 3-0 score held until the top of the sixth.  With two outs, Freddie Freeman walked, Tommy Edman singled, and Kiké Hernandez brought them both home with a double to left.

That chased Sanchez (prematurely?) from the game, and Robertson entered.  Robertson got out of that inning but was immediately in trouble in the top of the seventh.  He allowed a lead-off single to Andy Pages and then hit Will Smith to put two runners on.  Matt Strahm replaced Robertson, struck out Shohei Ohtani looking and got Mookie Betts to pop up to third.  Hernandez launched the first pitch he saw from Strahm into the right-center field stands and that was essentially the ballgame.

Ohtani got the win, allowing the three runs on three hits and striking out nine.  Trea Turner (0 for 3), Kyle Schwarber (0 for 4) and Bryce Harper (1 for 4) came up small in the loss, with a combined six strikeouts.

Featured Card:  I hate making these cards when the Phillies lose.

Field Report:  Doug and I watched/agonized over this game from our preferred Section 315.  I reminded him before the game we were lucky to be attending postseason games for the fourth year in a row, to which he responded, like a true Phillies fan, "But we haven't won anything yet."  We did a full, pregame lap of the ballpark, buying a few NLDS souvenirs and choosing Uncle Charlie's Steaks as our playoff dinner.

As usual, the pregame ceremony was fantastic, the crowd was raucous and the energy levels were high.  Similar to a year ago in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Mets, the crowd fell flat when the Phillies went inning after inning without scoring any more runs.  If all is right with the world, our next game will be NLCS Game 1 against either the Cubs or Brewers.

Transaction:  Garrett Stubbs (c) and Lou Trivino (rhp) were omitted from the postseason roster with the Phillies opting to go with Otto Kemp (inf) and Tim Mayza (lhp).

Game 140 - Bullpen Can't Keep Fish Down

2020 Topps #675
Marlins 3
, Phillies 2
Game 140 - Friday Night, September 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 77-63, 2nd Place, 15 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Seranthony Dominguez and Matt Strahm surrendered late inning home runs to the Marlins and the Phillies' offense was mostly quiet throughout this 3-2 loss.

What It Means:  This is a fairly crucial series, and the Phillies lead over the Marlins in the Wild Card race slipped to four games with the defeat.

What Happened:  The Phillies scored in the first (Trea Turner solo home run) and in the third (Bryce Harper RBI single) and then was shut down throughout the rest of the game.  Cristopher Sanchez cruised through five innings, striking out four, and was unfortunately removed in the sixth in favor of Dominguez.  Dominguez allowed a single and then a game-tying two-run home run to pinch-hitter Jesus Sanchez.  Strahm gave up a solo home run to the light-hitting Jacob Stallings to begin the seventh inning, giving the Marlins the lead and the eventual win.

Featured Card:  David Robertson, acquired by the Marlins at the trade deadline, has been demoted from his closer's role after a rough start with his new team.  He pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and came away with the win.

Field Report:  Doug and I went to this game, and it was a hot one.  The highlight by far was the new turkey gobbler sandwich, now available at Bull's BBQ presumably throughout the remainder of the season.  Bull's has changed up its menu throughout the summer and while Doug was sad to see the street corn offering go, the turkey gobbler was a welcome addition.  The game itself was meh.

Transaction:  Trea Turner (ss) was activated from the Paternity List and Weston Wilson (inf) was sent back down to Lehigh Valley.

Game 55 - Phils in Freefall as May Ends

2019 Topps Allen & Ginter #248
Mets 4
, Phillies 1
Game 55 - Wednesday Night, May 31st in Flushing
Record - 25-30, 4th Place, 7 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies closed out the month of May with a whimper, barely putting up a fight in this 4-1 loss to the Mets.

What It Means:  Again, let's quickly move along.  The Phillies were 10-16 in May, although it seems as if they were 0-26.  Kyle Schwarber batted .115 (10 for 87) for the month, and seven of his 10 hits were home runs.  That's not great.  Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner both batted .208, J.T. Realmuto batted .228.  The sole offensive bright spot was Bryce Harper who batted .315 (14 for 42) with three home runs.  As Matt Gelb Tweeted, 25-30 is the team's low mark of the season (until Thursday's game) and they've scored seven runs in their last four games.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola's record dropped to 4-4 as he allowed four runs on four hits in six innings of work.  The Phillies were never really in this game.  Edmundo Sosa accounted for their only run with a solo home run in the third.  The Phillies offense was 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Featured Card:  Old friend David Robertson pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his 10th save for the season with the Mets, and his second in two days.

Phillies Add Marsh, Robertson, Thor at Busy Trade Deadline

Like most baseball fans, I spent a lot of the day Tuesday refreshing my Twitter feed at an unhealthy clip, waiting for any news of a Phillies trade.  I actually resigned myself to the fact the Phillies might not make any moves, and they'd be one and done with the minor trade on Sunday for shortstop Edmundo Sosa.  But as the clock moved closer to the 6pm deadline, and as I continued to refresh my browser, the Phillies made one move, then immediately another and then finally one last move with about 40 minutes to go.  I'm way more excited about these moves than I was about the deals made last year, and here's a look at the newest Phillies, former Phillies, and some of their baseball card offerings.

2022 Topps Variations #243
2022 Choice Reading Fightin Phils #1
Trade #1
Phillies acquire Brandon Marsh (of) from the Los Angeles Angels for Logan O'Hoppe (c)

I think this was the most questionable trade, as O'Hoppe is going to be a fine major league catcher soon and Marsh has struggled mightily at the plate.  But O'Hoppe is blocked by J.T. Realmuto for the next three seasons, and the Phillies have Marsh under control for I believe the next five seasons.  He slides into the everyday center fielder role and he's one of the top defenders in the game.

Marsh has cards dating back to 2017 with the Angels, and he's appeared in a bunch of sets so far this year including Topps flagship, Topps Gypsy Queen and Topps Heritage.  O'Hoppe has appeared in Phillies minor league sets dating back to 2019, and I'll be rooting for him as he progresses through the Angels' system.  To make room for Marsh on the 40-man roster, Odubel Herrera (of) was designated for assignment.

2020 Topps Total #274
2021 Choice Jersey Shore BlueClaws #4
Trade #2
Phillies acquire David Robertson (rhp) from the Chicago Cubs for Ben Brown (rhp)

This will be a shot at redemption for Robertson, who signed a big two-year deal before the 2019 season with the Phillies, and was limited to just seven games with the clubs due to an arm injury.  Robertson, Seranthony Dominguez and Brad Hand will all get work in the late innings for the Phillies.  He's already received more than a few Phillies cards, and he's not shown up in any mainstream baseball card releases since 2020.

Brown had recently been promoted to Reading, and he was one of the club's top pitching prospects.  The only card of his in my collection is from last year's BlueClaws team set.  To make room for Robertson on the 40-man roster, Jeurys Familia (rhp) was designated for assignment.

2022 Topps Variations #584
2021 Topps Heritage #653

Trade #3
Phillies acquire Noah Syndergaard (rhp) from the Los Angeles Angels for Mickey Moniak (of) and Jadiel Sanchez (of)

And finally, as a replacement for Bailey Falter in the starting pitching rotation, the Phillies went back to the Angels to acquire Syndergaard, the former Mets All-Star who is absolutely going to look strange in red pinstripes.  Syndergaard has made 15 starts for the Angels so far this year, going 5-8 with a 3.83 ERA. He has thousands of baseball card appearances, including his 2022 cards in the Donruss and Topps flagship sets.

Moniak, the Phillies' #1 pick in the 2016 amateur player draft, will look to reboot with the Angels.  In 47 games with the Phillies over the past three seasons, he batted .129 (12 for 93) with a double and a home run.  I have more cards of his in my collection than I care to admit here in public.  Sanchez had been player in Low-A Clearwater and I don't believe he's appeared on any baseball cards to date.

Game 94 - Phils, Bohm Lose Ugly in Extras to Cubs

2019 Topps Update #US217
Cubs 6
, Phillies 2 (10 Innings)
Game 94 - Saturday Night, July 23rd in Philadelphia
Record - 49-45, 3rd Place, 8 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies wasted a solid start from Zack Wheeler as this game got away quickly in extra innings and the Cubs won, 6-2.

What It Means:  Not a great way to start the second half.  After the game there was a heated exchange between the slumping Nick Castellanos and beat reporter Jim Salisbury.  Castellanos was asked by Salisbury if he heard the boos (from the fans) and the exchange got a little testy.  The right fielder was 0 for 4 in the game to drop his season average down to .245.  He's been a complete bust so far, and hopefully he can turn it around in time for this season to be relevant.

What Happened:  Wheeler went seven innings, allowing a run on three hits.  The Phillies tied the score in the seventh when J.T. Realmuto singled home Darick Hall, who had reached to start the inning on a double.  With the score tied, Jose Alvarado started the 10th inning and the game quickly unraveled for the Phillies.  Alec Bohm threw wide of home after fielding a grounder to allow the go-ahead run to score.  He then couldn't handle a ball from David Bote that resulted in a double and two more runs would score when he tried to corral a ground ball by swiping at it, resulting in his latest costly error.  By the time it was over, the Cubs had scored five runs, but only three of them were earned.

Featured Card:  Reliever and short-term Phillie David Robertson picked up the win for the Cubs, and Robertson has been outstanding this season.  He's got a 1.88 ERA in 34 games and he'll likely be dealt prior to the upcoming trade deadline.

Look Away if You've Already Moved on from the 2020 Phillies

2020 Chachi Almost #13
2020 Chachi Almost #15
2020 Chachi Almost #20
2020 Chachi Almost #16

In an effort to put the 2020 Phillies season behind me as quickly as possible, I wanted to get this post out of the way.  Every year, I create my custom Chachi cards during the offseason and the early stages of spring training, which means I end up with several "Almost" cards of players who didn't get the call to the big club during the season.  Those cards are presented here.

Victor Arano, Seranthony Dominguez and David Robertson spent the season either injured, recovering from an injury or getting surgery to repair an injury.  Arano and Dominguez should return, while Robertson will not.  Despite the bullpen's woes, JD Hammer never got the call to join the team and Odubel Herrera remains exiled following his arrest for domestic violence last year.  Christian Bethancourt was a non-roster invitee to spring training and then disappeared, with no sign of any transaction (that I can find) to tell us where he ended up.  Finally, veterans Mikie Mahtook and Nick Martini were also non-roster invitees who later joined the taxi squad in Allentown as part of the team's 60-player pool.  Neither got the call to leave Lehigh Valley and travel to Philadelphia.

2020 Chachi Almost #18

2020 Chachi Almost #17

Also presented below is a final look at the team's 2019-2020 offseason moves and other player additions and deletions during the pandemic-shortened season.  For some reason, I failed to post my Departures cards of Fernando Salas and Mitch Walding when they originally left the team and solely for the sake of completeness, they're presented here.

Game 107 - Phils Go Quietly to Giants; Dickerson Acquired at Deadline

2019 Phillies Team Issue 2 #30
Giants 5Phillies 1
Game 107 - Wednesday Night, July 31st in Philadelphia
Record - 56-51, 3rd place, 7 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  A quiet offense and a nightmare sixth inning by Vince Velasquez and Adam Morgan combined to cause this 5-1 Phillies loss.

What It Means:  The Phillies could have overtaken the Nationals for second place in the division with a win, but it was not to be.

What Happened:  Velasquez was absolutely cruising until the sixth inning when he allowed a lead-off walk and a Buster Posey home run.  Adam Morgan entered and surrendered two more home runs to give the Giants a 5-1 lead.  In that one inning, Morgan's ERA jumped from 3.07 to 3.94.

The offense managed five hits off Jeff Samardzija and three Giants relievers.

Featured Card:  The loss was bad, but the news that David Robertson wouldn't return in 2019 was even worse.  Robertson was limited to only seven games for the Phillies this season and it was announced on Wednesday he'd need season ending elbow surgery.  He could eventually need Tommy John surgery that could put his 2020 season (and his career) in jeopardy.  The three veteran relievers who were supposed to bolster the Phillies bullpen this season - Robertson, Tommy Hunter and Pat Neshek - have pitched in a combined 30 innings this season as all lost significant time due to injuries.

2019 Topps Heritage #188
Transactions:  Right before the 4pm trade deadline, the Phillies acquired outfielder Corey Dickerson from the Pirates for a player to be named later and international bonus money.  Dickerson was an All-Star with the Rays in 2017 and won a Gold Glove last season.  So far this year, he's batting .315 with four home runs and 25 RBIs over 44 games.  He's got baseball cards in all the major Topps releases so far this year.  Dylan Cozens was designated for assignment to make room for Dickerson on the 40-man roster.  Cozens joins Mitch Walding and Yacksel Rios in recent DFA limbo.

Arrived During the 2019 Season
  • Jay Bruce - of (6/2/19) - Acquired from the Seattle Mariners with cash considerations for Jake Scheiner.
  • Brad Miller - inf (6/13/19) - Purchased from the New York Yankees.
  • Fernando Salas - rhp (6/13/19) - Signed as a free agent formerly with the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League.
  • Mike Morin - rhp (7/20/19) - Acquired from the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations.
  • Drew Smyly - lhp (7/21/19) - Signed as a free agent formerly with the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

  • Aaron Altherr - of (5/12/19) - Selected off waivers by the San Francisco Giants.

Uniform Number Update - 2019 Edition

2015 Topps #400
2016 Topps Heritage #384
2017 Topps Update #US149
2018 Topps Big League #94
2018 Topps Heritage #388
New uniform numbers recently popped up on the team's roster page on its website, and that means we're officially getting closer to the start of spring training.  As I've done the past few years, here's a run-down of the new numbers.  As of this writing, the newly acquired J.T. Realmuto hasn't officially been assigned a number, but I would think he'll end up with his familiar #11, which is conveniently available.

New Players (Under 60/40-Man Roster Division)
  • #2 Jean Segura - The new shortstop takes the number worn by J.P. Crawford last year, one of the players sent to the Mariners for Segura.
  • #12 Juan Nicasio - Jose Bautista wore this number last season, and the #58 worn by Nicasio during his two-game stint with the Phillies in 2017 is now occupied by Seranthony Dominguez.
  • #22 Andrew McCutchen - Cutch assumes his familiar #22, coaxed away from manager Gabe Kapler.
  • #30 David Robertson - This number was vacant last season, having been worn by Matt McBride in spring training.
  • #47 James Pazos - The Phillies will not be retiring this number for Aaron Loup, so it's available for Pazos.
  • #52 Jose Alvarez - The same can be said for #52 and its wearer last season, Zac Curtis.
It should also be noted that several non-roster invitees have been assigned low numbers, including #9 Phil Gosselin, #18 Lane Adams, #31 Shane Robinson, #33 Matt McBride, #40 Gregorio Petit and #44 Rob Brantly.

New Coaches
  • #3 Paco Figueroa - Former first base coach Jose David Flores was #3 in 2018.
  • #10 Bobby Dickerson - Trevor Plouffe briefly wore this number last season.
  • #57 David Lundquist - Luis Garcia had worn this number since making his debut in 2013.
Number Swaps
  • #19 Gabe Kapler - When McCutchen claimed #22, Kapler switched to #19 which is a number he wore with the Rangers, Red Sox and Rays during his playing days.
Highest Number
JoJo Romero was assigned #79 which is the highest new number.  Pat Neshek (#93) and Tommy Hunter (#96) are coming back with their curiously chosen numbers as well.

Duplicate Numbers
#28 - The Phillies website lists this number for both Vince Velasquez, who has worn it the last three seasons and non-roster invitee Andrew Romine.  My guess here is that Romine is actually #21 and this is just an error on the website.

Numbers Available - Unofficially Retired Division
#6 Ryan Howard
#11 Jimmy Rollins
#26 Chase Utley

Numbers Available - Machado/Harper/Keuchel Division
#13, #34, #60

Numbers Available - Up for Grabs Division
#21 - How is this number not taken for the second year in a row?  Non-roster invitee Collin Cowgill wore this number last spring and Clay Buchholz had the number for a very brief time in 2017.
#39 - Worn by pitching coach Rick Kranitz last year.
#41 - Worn by Carlos Santana last season.  I'm guessing this number goes to the recently signed Drew Butera, who hasn't yet shown up on the Phillies website.

Phils Bolster Bullpen with Robertson

2019 Chachi New Additions #6
On Thursday, the Phillies seemingly put the finishing touches on their 2019 bullpen by signing reliever David Robertson to a two-year deal with an option for a third year.  Robertson will serve as a late-inning reliever, most likely splitting closer duties with Seranthony Dominguez.  Robertson has had two different stints with the Yankees during his 11-year career, first from 2008 to 2014 and then again in 2017 and last season.  In between, he spent 2 1/2 seasons with the White Sox.

One of the more reliable relievers in the game, Robertson appeared in 69 games for the Yankees last season, earning a 3.23 ERA with five saves.  An All-Star in 2011, he was the primary closer for the Yankees and White Sox between 2014 and 2016.

Robertson showed up in the 2008 Bowman Draft set and his first Topps flagship card can be found in the 2009 update set.  He has Yankees cards in several 2018 Topps offerings.
