An All-Star with the Rockies in 2019, David Dahl came to spring training as a non-roster invitee and began the season with the Triple-A IronPigs.  He had his contract purchased on June 3rd when Brandon Marsh landed on the injured list with a hamstring injury.  Dahl's first game was probably also his best, as he was 2 for 3 with a solo home run that June 3rd, which also happened to be the night Rhys Hoskins returned to Philadelphia as a member of the Brewers.  Dahl made 16 starts for the Phillies in June (12 in left field, three at DH and one in right field) before being designated for assignment on July 9th.  He was briefly a free agent before re-signing and finishing the season with the IronPigs.  Dahl batted .207 with three home runs and eight RBIs in his 19 games with the Phillies.

Cool trivia:  Dahl wore #35 in spring training and for the first two weeks he was with the Phillies in early June.  Prior to Cole Hamels night on June 21st, even though the Phillies were not planning to retire Hamels' #35, Dahl respectfully switched his uniform number to #31.

Game 65 - Sunday Morning, June 9th in London
Record - 45-20, 1st Place, 9 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Gregory Soto and Jose Alvarado couldn't hold back the Mets, as the Phillies dropped the second London Series game, 6-5.

What It Means:  That was fun, until it wasn't.  I enjoyed the 10am start time, and this is the first Phillies game I've watched while enjoying my morning coffee.  The Phillies should have won both games of this series, but instead fell late to the Mets.

What Happened:  Taijuan Walker and David Dahl deserved to be the stars of this game.  Walker pitched well and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings with two runners on base and the Phillies holding a 3-0 lead.  He had struck out six and allowed only two hits.  Soto allowed both inherited runners to score, along with a run of his own, to tie the game at 3-3.  Dahl hit a dramatic, go-ahead pinch-hit home run in the seventh to once again give the Phillies the lead.

But Alvarado had a rare bad outing, allowing a pair of hits, a pair of walks and three runs.  One of the runs was unearned due to a passed ball by J.T. Realmuto.  The Phillies had their chance to come back in the bottom of the ninth.  With the bases loaded and one out, Nick Castellanos hit a squibber in front of the plate that resulted in a 2-3 game-ending double play.

Featured Card:  Dahl should have been the hero of this game, so I'll still give him the card.  This is his only card so far from 2024, from the IronPigs team set.

The Phillies spent most of the offseason with little to no roster movement, but once camp started in Clearwater there was a sudden flurry of moves.  By my unofficial tally, 65 days passed between the Phillies re-signing Aaron Nola on November 19th and the signing of Kolby Allard on January 23rd.  As we look forward to the first Grapefruit League action tomorrow afternoon, here's a look at the latest comings and goings over the past week.

• On February 14th, the signing of Spencer Turnbull (rhp) was announced, and McKinley Moore (rhp) was designated for assignment.  Turnbull is 12-29 over parts of five seasons with the Tigers.  In 2023, he was 1-4 with a 7.26 ERA in seven starts and I'm assuming he'll provide some starting pitching depth at Triple-A.

• On February 16th, Moore and Diego Castillo (inf) were both claimed off waivers.  Moore went to the Yankees with Castillo going to the Orioles.  It's surprising to me Moore would be let go, given he had been identified as one of the organization's top pitching prospects.

• There were a flurry of moves on Monday, with the biggest being the signing of Whit Merrifield (inf) to a one-year deal to provide a solid infield or outfield bench option.  Merrifield has long been a Phillies Room favorite, as he's one of our son Doug's favorite non-Phillies players.  Like Merrifield, Doug prides himself in being able to play all over the diamond, wherever the team needs him to play.  And I'm excited to add some Merrifield baseball cards to my 2024 Phillies binder

• To make room for Merrifield, Kaleb Ort was designated for assignment and later traded to the Orioles for cash considerations.  Ort had been on the 40-man roster for six days.

• Finally, three more non-roster invitees were added, bringing the total spring head count to 61.  Austin Brice (rhp) last pitched in the majors in 2022 with the Pirates, and he's a veteran of seven big league seasons having spent time with the Marlins, Reds, Marlins again, Red Sox and Pirates.  David Dahl (of) was an All-Star with the Rockies in 2019, and he's spent most of the past two seasons bouncing around the minor league systems of the Brewers, Nationals, Dodgers and Padres.  And Ricardo Pinto (rhp) returns to the Phillies, having last pitched in 25 games for the team in 2017.  He's been all over the place since then, having last pitched in the Mexican League in 2023.
