Drew Ellis began his professional career in 2017, and before his time with the Phillies this season he had appeared in 35 games in 2021 and 2022 with the Diamondbacks and Mariners.  He was released by the Mariners on March 17th, signing a month later with the Phillies who initially sent him to Double-A Reading.  After a few weeks with the Fightin Phils, Ellis was promoted to Triple-A and on June 1st his contract was selected when Alec Bohm landed on the Injured List.  His first stint with the Phillies lasted nine games, and he'd be back up again on July 14th when Josh Harrison was placed on the IL.  Ellis has been playing with the IronPigs since July 21st, and in 12 games so far this season with the Phillies, he's batting .217 with two home runs.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies outhit the Mets, but still managed to lose as Max Scherzer bested Taijuan Walker in this 4-2 defeat.

What It Means:  So much for a good start to June.  The Phils were swept out of Flushing, and they're off to D.C. to open a three-game weekend set against the last place Nationals.  The Phillies are only one game ahead of the Nationals in the division standings.

What Happened:  Walker didn't look right from the outset and was pulled after four innings, having allowed three runs on two hits and three walks.  The big blow was a two-run home run by Mark Canha in the fourth that put the Mets ahead for good.  The Phillies plated a pair of first inning runs off Scherzer and then shut it down for the remainder of the day.  Their runs scored on a throwing error from Mets' catcher Francisco Alvarez and a Nick Castellanos sacrifice fly.

Featured Card:  Here's a card of new Phillies first baseman Drew Ellis (see below), who made his Phillies debut in this game as a pinch-hitter for Brandon Marsh in the ninth inning.  Ellis flew out to end the game.  He was signed by the Phillies in mid-April after being released by the Mariners following spring training.

Transaction:  Ellis (inf) was added to the roster when Alec Bohm (inf) landed on the Injured List with  left hamstring strain.  Cal Stevenson (of) was designated for assignment to make room for Ellis on the 40-man roster, and Stevenson had been on the 40-man roster for only five days.
