1965 Topps - 3rd Series Phillies Alumni

It took us a while, but we finally finished off the third series of the 1965 Topps set we've been collecting since late 2019.  I'm getting closer to completely wrapping up the set, and the blog celebrating every card in the set, so I'd expect these series review posts to start to come a little quicker.

Here's a look at the 20 cards in the set's third series featuring a former Phillies player, coach or manager.  Clicking on the card number underneath each picture will take you to that card's post.

I've had fun the last few years putting together these season wrap-up posts, looking at all of the cards within a particular Topps set with a Phillies connection.  Anyone who has put on a Phillies uniform at some point in his career - as a player, coach or manager - qualifies for the list below.  I also included Woody Woodward's card in my tally as he briefly served as the Phillies General Manager in 1988. Most of these cards made their way into series preview posts throughout the year, but I wanted to show some of those cards that didn't make it.

1985 Topps #134
1985 Topps Appreciation:  Father's Day is a month away, but I wanted to be able to fit in these two cards given the Expos/Phillies connection with the Tito and Terry Francona card.  Before the younger Francona managed the Phillies through four grueling seasons (1997-2000), the elder Francona already had a Phillies connection.

Tito played 15 years in the majors, squeezing in 27 games with the Phillies in 1967.  Tito was purchased from the Cardinals by the Phils on April 10, 1967 and then sold again (hopefully at a profit) to the Braves by the Phils on June 12, 1967.  His short stint earned him a late series Phillies baseball card in the 1967 Topps set.

The elder Ozzie Virgil had no Phillies connection that I could find during his playing days.  The younger Virgil was an All-Star with the Phillies in 1985 and spent parts of six seasons behind the plate in maroon pinstripes.

1967 Topps #443 Tito Francona

John Patsy "Tito" Francona played in just 27 games with the 1967 Phillies, hitting .205 as the team's primary first baseman in April and May. In early June, he was sold to the Atlanta Braves. Between 1964 and 1969, Tito was sold to 4 different teams - to the Cardinals by the Indians (December 1964), to the Phillies by the Cardinals (April 1967), to the Braves by the Phillies (June 1967) and to the Athletics by the Braves (August 1969).

He played 15 seasons in the Majors, never making it to the Postseason, and was named to the AL All-Star team in 1961. His best years were with the Cleveland Indians (1959-1964), where in 835 games, Tito hit .284 with 85 home runs and 378 RBI. In 2001, the Indians named him to their "Top 100 Cleveland Indians Roster".

Tito's son Terry would also play in the Majors, and he would eventually go on to manage the Phils.
