2024 Topps Heritage #498
Former All-Star Carlos Estevez was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline and immediately given the club's closer role.  Manager Rob Thomson had been using a closer by committee approach throughout the season, with Jose Alvarado, Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm all getting save chances.  Estevez provided some stability in the bullpen in his short tenure with the Phillies, recording six saves in eight opportunities.  He was 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA in 20 appearances, striking out 18 and walking seven in 21 innings pitched.  His enduring legacy however will be the grand slam he surrendered to Francisco Lindor in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Mets, effectively ending the Phillies season in heartbreaking fashion.  The Mets would go on to win that game, 4-1, and advance to the NLCS.  Estevez is a free agent as of this writing in late December.

NLDS Game 4 - Epic Collapse Completed

Mets 4
Phillies 1
NLDS Game 4 - Wednesday Afternoon, October 9th in Flushing
Mets win series, 3-1

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies' epic collapse from first half juggernauts to second half and postseason pushovers was completed in this 4-1 loss to the Mets.

What It Means:  I have no idea, other than I'm going to complete this post and take a break from the Phillies for a little bit.  I doubt I'll watch much, if any, of the postseason.  I would think changes need to be made, but where do you start?  For two postseasons in a row, the Phillies mostly forgot how to hit.  The team batted .186 in the NLDS with 38 strikeouts.  And the strongest bullpen in baseball pitched to a 11.37 ERA.  What a mess.

What Happened:  Ranger Suarez was continually and constantly in trouble, yet he somehow worked through 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run.  He struck out eight while allowing five hits and four walks.  Jeff Hoffman recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning and came back out to start the sixth.  His sequence went like this:  single, wild pitch, hit by pitch, wild pitch, walk, force out at home.  Carlos Estevez got the call from a bullpen and promptly allowed a season-ending grand slam to Francisco Lindor.

The Phillies' offense was once again dead.  Bryce Harper laced a lead-off double in the sixth, but was left stranded after Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto struck out and Bryson Stott hit a weak grounder to first to end the inning.  Castellanos had a pair of hits and finished the NLDS with a .412 average, one of the few (only?) bright spots from the Phillies other than Harper and Zack Wheeler.  Everyone else not named Harper or Castellanos batted .140 (14 for 100).  Realmuto was 0 for 11, Brandon Marsh and Alec Bohm were both 1 for 13.

The long offseason begins today, and The Phillies Room will return after a brief therapeutic sabbatical.

Game 139 - Homers, Sanchez, Bullpen Contribute to Win

2024 Topps #634
Phillies 4
Blue Jays 2
Game 139 - Wednesday Afternoon, September 4th in Toronto
Record - 83-56, 1st Place, 7 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Long balls again led to the win as Kyle Schwarber, Kody Clemens and J.T. Realmuto all homered in this 4-2 victory.

What It Means:  The Phillies swept the quick two-game series in Toronto, and they're now off to Miami for a four-game weekend set.

What Happened:  Cristopher Sanchez had a rocky first inning, allowing three straight doubles, but he'd settle down to pitch seven innings and strike out seven on the way to his 10th win.  Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez slammed the door on the Marlins, with Estevez earning his fourth save with the Phillies.

Schwarber continued his torrid pace with yet another lead-off home run, his 13th of the season.  That ties the mark set by Alfonso Soriano in 2003, and Schwarber will hopefully blow past that mark over the final month of the season.  Clemens gave the Phillies the lead with a two-run home run in the second, and Realmuto added some insurance with solo home run in the ninth.  Brandon Marsh was 3 for 3 with a double.

Featured Card:  Estevez has been extremely impressive since being acquired from the Angels at the trade deadline.  He's got a 1.72 ERA in 14 appearances and 15 2/3 innings pitched so far, with 16 strikeouts.  He doesn't have any Phillies cards yet, but here's his Angels card from Topps Series Two.

Transaction:  Nick Nelson (rhp) had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley and Tyler Phillips (rhp) was optioned down.  Michael Rucker (rhp) was designated for assignment to make room for Nelson on the 40-man roster.

Game 104 - Phillips Tosses CG Shutout; Bullpen Adds Estevez

2024 Topps Now #479
Phillies 8
Guardians 0
Game 104 - Saturday Night, July 27th in Philadelphia
Record - 65-39, 1st Place, 9 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Tyler Phillips improved to 3-0 with a four-hit, complete game shutout as the Phillies offense mashed four home runs to support the rookie.

What It Means:  Phillips is the first Phillies rookie to throw a shutout since current Orioles pitcher Zach Eflin threw one in 2016.

What Happened:  The Phillies rode Phillips' pitching and a seven-run fourth inning to this win.  Bryce Harper, Brandon Marsh and Kyle Schwarber all homered in the fourth, with Harper's blast his 100th launched at Citizens Bank Park.  Nick Castellanos added a solo home run in the sixth inning.  Phillips gave up four singles, walked a batter and struck out four.

Featured Card:  I typically wouldn't do this, but given I have zero Phillips Phillies cards in my collection and Topps produced this fantastic Topps Now card to celebrate his gem, I'm featuring a card I don't yet have in hand.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, the Phillies landed their bullpen help, acquiring Carlos Estevez (rhp) from the Los Angeles Angles for pitching prospects George Klassen (rhp) and Samuel Aldegheri (lhp).  Estevez has emerged as one of the best closers in the game, saving 31 games last year in an All-Star season, and saving 20 games so far this year.  He spent the first six seasons of his big league career with the Rockies.  He has a 2.38 ERA in 34 innings pitched this season.

Klassen was 3-2 with a 1.97 ERA in 14 starts between Jersey Shore and Clearwater this season, and Aldegheri was 6-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 starts between Reading and Jersey Shore.  It was a steep price to pay for a rental player, as Estevez is a free agent following the season, but the hope is that his addition makes the bullpen stronger during a long postseason run.

Additionally, Ranger Suarez (lhp) landed on the Injured List with a bad back and Kolby Allard (lhp) was recalled to take his spot on the roster and the rotation.  Here's hoping Suarez isn't out too long, and that this additional rest gets him back to his early season form.
