Sometimes Phillies news happens that's so big I completely overlook mentioning it on this blog.  Such is the case with the recent re-signing of All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto, officially announced this past Friday.  While I'm quick to post on seemingly random non-roster invitee announcements, I occasionally miss the bigger news as I assume everyone who has found their way here is already well aware of Realmuto's return.  Nevertheless, I'll make it official here!  Realmuto's five-year deal takes him through the 2025 season and will pay the fan favorite $115.5 million.  I'm suddenly excited for the 2021 season to begin.

I was also delaying this post in the hope that the Didi Gregorius signing would become official, but we're still waiting on all of the details to be settled there.

In ex-Phillies news, pitcher Cole Irvin was traded to the A's on January 30th to free up a 40-man roster spot, and outfielder Kyle Garlick and pitcher Victor Arano were both claimed off waivers by the Braves after being designated for assignment on January 18th.  Short-time Phillies reliever Deolis Guerra will join Irvin in Oakland as the right-hander was signed to a minor league contract on Tuesday.

Deolis Guerra was claimed off waivers in February, taking the spot of reliever JD Hammer on the 40-man roster.  He appeared in a career high 44 games in 2016 with the Angels, going 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA, all in relief.

I don't have it in hand yet, but I've ordered what could be Guerra's first and only Phillies baseball card this year, included within Wave 7 of this year's Topps Total set.

His mainstream baseball cards are sparse.  He first appeared in the 2007 Bowman Draft Picks & Prospects set as a young Mets prospect.  He next appeared in the 2009 Bowman Prospects Autographs set, and then several years later on a multi-player Rookie Combos card in the 2015 Topps Update set.

Camp Gets More Crowded - Guerra Added

As of this writing, the Phillies will have a recent record 69 players in camp, 70 if you count Odubel Herrera who has been banished to minor league camp.  Five more names were added to the mix on Tuesday, including right-handed reliever Deolis Guerra who landed on the 40-man roster.  Guerra was claimed off waivers from the Brewers and fan favorite JD Hammer was designated for assignment.

Guerra has been pitching in the majors since 2015 and last season he appeared in just 1 game for the Brewers, getting shelled in the process (2/3 inning, four runs).  His sole Topps flagship card to date can be found in the 2015 Topps Update set.
