Bamboo Brad Returns; Flurry of Ex-Phils Sign Elsewhere

2021 Chachi New Additions #10
2021 Chachi Departures #3
2021 Chachi Departures #4
2021 Chachi Departures #5
2021 Chachi Departures #6

On Wednesday, the official first day of spring training, the Phillies announced the return of popular super utility player Brad Miller, who had spent last season with the Cardinals.  Miller's introduction of a lucky bamboo plant to the Phillies clubhouse during the summer of 2019 sparked a mini winning streak, and led to an increase in bamboo sales across the local area.  To make room for Miller on the 40-man roster, reliever Seranthony Dominguez was placed on the 60-day IL as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

At this point, most of the ex-Phillies that made up the rogue's gallery of the 2020 team have found new homes, with the exceptions of relievers Jose Alvarez and David Robertson.  The day will come when we no longer have to reflect back on the pain caused by the team's 2020 bullpen.  Of the players listed below, I'm saddest to see the departure of Phil Gosselin and I hope The Phillies Room Favorite finds himself a steady job on the Angels' roster.

Tommy Hunter appeared in a career high 68 games for the 2013 Orioles, and came within three games of matching that mark with 65 appearances for the 2018 Phillies.  And then everything fell apart.  Hunter was limited to only five games last season due to a right forearm strain, and he's hoping to rebound this year.

He's jumped around a bit with his Topps flagship set appearances, first appearing within the 2010 Topps set.  His card in last year's series two release marked his return to Topps sets for the first time since 2015.

Other than that 2019 Topps card, and a card in the 2019 Topps Heritage set, the rest of Hunter's Phillies baseball cards can all be found in the team-issued photo card sets from 2018 and 2019.

Hunter Returns; Updated List of Offseason Moves

2019 Topps #619
2020 Chachi Departures #11
2020 Chachi Departures #10
2020 Chachi Departures #5
On Wednesday, the Phillies brought back reliever Tommy Hunter on a one-year deal and moved David Robertson to the 60-day disabled list.  Robertson is recovering from Tommy John surgery and at best he could be back with the team in the second half of the season.  Hunter was limited to 5 1/3 innings last season for the Phillies and missed most of the year with an elbow injury.

Listed below is a look at an updated list of comings and goings for the Phillies, and by my unofficial tally there are still a few ex-Phillies out there looking for new homes as spring training gets started:  RHP Jared Hughes, Pat Neshek and Fernando Salas, LHP Pat Neshek and third baseman Mitch Walding.  Sean Rodriguez reportedly signed with the Marlins, although that deal has yet to be officially announced.

I'm bummed that Phillies Room favorite Brad Miller won't be coming back.  He was one of the sole bright spots last year in an otherwise disappointing season.

8 File for Free Agency; Pirela Released

On Halloween, the day after the conclusion of the World Series, eight Phillies filed for free agency.  Of the eight, I could see Brad Miller returning to fill a bench role and Drew Smyly might provide some depth at Triple-A.  It would be great to see Corey Dickerson return, but it's not clear how he would fit in to an already crowded outfield.

In a paper move only, outfielder Odubel Herrera was activated from the restricted list where he has languished since mid-May due to his arrest for domestic violence.

Finally, outfielder Jose Pirela was released as he'll pursue an opportunity to play in Japan.  In 12 games for the Phillies, Pirela hit .235 (4 for 17) with a home run and two RBIs.  He leaves having appeared on zero Phillies baseball cards, making him a prime candidate for a future Phillies Missing Links custom set.

I'm showing off some of the 2020 Chachi cards I created for these departed players above.  As I've done in the past, I'll also create a variation card for each player with whatever new team they land with.  I have to say I'm enjoying working with the 1991 Topps template more than I thought I would, and I'm looking forward to spending all next season with this design.

Moving On - 2019-2020 Offseason

Uniform Number Update - 2018 Edition

2014 Topps #502
1993 Topps #418
2009 Topps #232
2012 Topps #625
A sure sign that spring training is approaching is the appearance of new uniform numbers on the Phillies website's roster page, usually in mid-January.  New players and coaches have had the dreaded "--" in front of their names all offseason and the Phillies only updated their website for the new uniform number assignments this past week.  Here's a look at the new number assignments and a few number changes.

This is a longer post than in prior years given the complete overhaul of the coaching staff.

New Players (Under 60/Over 90 Division)
  • #4 Ryan Flaherty - Flaherty takes over the number that Andres Blanco wore the past four seasons.
  • #9 Adam Rosales - Bullpen coach John McLaren wore this number for the Phillies in 2017.
  • #12 Will Middlebrooks - Middlebrooks assumes the number associated with former Phillies coach Mickey Morandini.
  • #21 Collin Cowgill - Clay Buchholz briefly wore this number last season.
  • #30 Matt McBride - Cameron Perkins most recently wore this number last season.
  • #33 Drew Hutchison - This number opened up when pitching coach Rick Kranitz switched to #39.
  • #40 Tommy Hunter - Former hitting coach Matt Stairs wore this number in 2017.
  • #41 Carlos Santana - Santana has worn this number his entire career and with Brock Stassi headed to the Twins, there wasn't even a need to negotiate for it.
  • #93 Pat Neshek - If Neshek has explained his reasoning for his new high number, I've missed it so far.  He wore #17 during his stint last season with the club before being traded to the Rockies.  He's the first person in franchise history to wear #93.
New Coaches
  • #3 Jose Flores - Oddly enough, this number was vacant all last season.  David Lough last wore the number in 2016.
  • #8 John Mallee - New hitting coach Mallee takes over the number that rightfully only belongs to Juan Samuel.
  • #22 Gabe Kapler - Bob McClure wore this number the past four seasons.  Interestingly enough, Kapler never wore the number during his 12-year big league career.
  • #35 Jim Gott - Gott becomes the first person to wear #35 since Cole Hamels departed for the Rangers in mid-2015.
  • #45 Chris Young - The new assistant pitching coach takes over Pete Mackanin's old number.
  • #58 Pedro Guerrero - Jeremy Hellickson's number goes to the new assistant hitting coach.
  • #59 Rob Thomson - This number became available when Mark Leiter, Jr. switched to #31.
  • #62 Dusty Wathan - Patrick Schuster briefly wore this number in 2016.
Number Swaps
1998 Phillies Team Issue #31

  • #15 Andrew Knapp - Knapp wore #34 last season and the Phillies announced that no one would wear that number in 2018 in honor of Roy Halladay.
  • #31 Mark Leiter, Jr. - This is kind of cool.  Leiter assumes the number his father wore for the Phillies in 1997 and 1998.  Hyun Soo Kim sported the number last season.
  • #39 Rick Kranitz - Kranitz swapped the #33 he's worn the past two season for #39.
  • #46 Adam Morgan - Morgan had worn #39, but he's now switched to #46.  Jesen Therrien and Jeanmar Gomez wore #46 last season.
Highest Number
If not for Neshek, non-roster invitee Nick Rickles would win the honors with his #86.

Numbers Available - Unofficially Retired Division
The Phillies have a cool, yet unofficial policy of not handing out the uniform number of recently departed players (or coaches) who had been with the team for a while, and left a significant legacy with the franchise.  I'm including #25 on the list below as this may be the Phillies paying tribute to recent Hall of Fame inductee Jim Thome.

#6 Ryan Howard
#10 Larry Bowa and Darren Daulton
#11 Jimmy Rollins
#13 Freddy Galvis
#25 Jim Thome (no offense to Daniel Nava, who wore the number in 2017)
#26 Chase Utley
#34 Roy Halladay

Number Available - Up for Grabs Division
And then there is the one stray number that just hasn't found a new home yet.  #54 was worn by both Casey Fien and Kevin Siegrist last season and it's the only number between 1 and 60, and not unofficially retired, currently up for grabs.  Non-roster invitee Fernando Abad may end up wearing #54, as he's currently numberless on the Phillies website.

Don't Forget Us
The Phillies went the extra mile and list out the following additional coaches/staff on the Coaches portion of their website - #81 Craig Driver (bullpen catcher/receiving coach), #82 Bob Stumpo (bullpen catcher/catching coach), #87 Sam Fuld (Major League player information coordinator) and #95 Mike Calitri (manager, advanced scouting)

Galvis Traded to Padres; Neshek & Hunter Officially Signed

2018 Chachi Departures #4

Early Friday afternoon, the Phillies traded shortstop Freddy Galvis to the Padres for Double-A starting pitcher Enyel De Los Santos.  Having made his debut on April 5, 2012, Galvis had been the team's longest tenured player, and that title now falls to Cesar Hernandez.  Moving the 28-year-old Galvis to the Padres opens up the shortstop position to J.P. Crawford.

2016 Topps Heritage Minors #60
Galvis had become a veteran leader in the Phillies clubhouse over the past few seasons, and he obtained his goal of playing in all 162 games in 2017.  The team's regular shortstop beginning in 2015, Galvis was the club's opening day second baseman in 2012 due to an injury to Chase Utley.  In six seasons with the Phils, Galvis hit .245 over 642 games while providing solid infield defense.  I'll miss seeing Galvis out at short, but with his free agency approaching at the end of the 2018 season, it was time for him to move on and give Crawford a shot.

I have 47 different Galvis baseball cards in my collection, beginning with his 2007 card in the Williamsport Crosscutters team set and ending with his 2017 Topps Now Players Weekend card.  He'll most likely find his way to a few more Phillies cards within early 2018 Topps releases.

De Los Santos spent the 2017 season with the San Antonio Missions.  Todd Zolecki Tweeted that he was the No. 13 prospect in the Padres system and he'll land at the No. 9 spot in the Phillies system.  That seems like a pretty good return for Galvis.  De Los Santos appeared in the 2016 Topps Heritage Minors set.
