2010-2019 Phillies Alumni Photo Cards

I updated this post here in October 2020 and this original post is now outdated.

I recently added a literal stack of Phillies Alumni photo cards to my collection, and I've been smiling ever since.  I know it may sound silly, but I love these cards and the fact that they're relatively difficult to obtain makes them all the more desirable.  You have to work to get these cards, as fellow collectors Rick and Steve F. can attest and I'm very much grateful that these cards (albeit unsigned) are now in my Phillies collection.  What follows is most likely still not a complete listing of the Alumni photo cards produced over the past decade, but at least we're getting closer.

Based on all the information available, it seems as if these Alumni photo cards first appeared in 2010.  Since then, the Phillies have been issuing these cards for returning players to sign at various meet and greet opportunities, including the annual Phillies Phestival and various reunion related events.

Complicating any efforts to fully checklist these cards is the fact that the Phillies had originally printed the cards with a copyright date on the back reflecting the date of issuance.  In recent years, the copyright date on the backs of these cards is for the date of the photo on the front.  For example, the Nick Punto card shown above contains information through Punto's final season in 2014, but the card contains a 2003 copyright date which corresponds to the photo used for the card.  In 2017 and again in 2018, the Phillies seemed to have switched back to using a copyright date that corresponds with the date of issuance and not the date of the photo.

My original post from December 2016 will now be mothballed and I'll continue to track any additions/revisions to his checklist within this post.  Any comments, revisions, help, etc. is definitely appreciated.

August 2018 Update - Fellow collector Rick recently informed me that the Phillies produced 20 new Alumni Photo Cards for the express purpose of having them available for returning members of the 2008 World Championship team to sign at a potential pre-game autograph signing during the 2018 Alumni Weekend.  For whatever reason, the planned autograph event was significantly curtailed with only Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Feliz stationed at one sole table for fans.  These cards should be considered unreleased and generally unavailable to the collecting public.

August 2019 Update - As part of the 2019 Alumni Weekend, a new Dale Murphy card was created with a 2019 copyright date on the front.  Cards for Joe Blanton, Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer and Brett Myers made their way into the collecting public as well as the embargo from last year's Alumni Weekend was lifted on those four cards.

I also found out after the fact that Matt Stairs, Eric Bruntlett and Ben Francisco were stationed at an autograph table during Alumni Weekend.  Presumably cards for Francisco are now in the wild.

2016 Phungo Cards are Here (Early!) from @phungo2008

2016 Phungo #38
2016 Phungo #22A
2016 Phungo #22B
2016 Phungo #27
In October, I received an awesome package from Phungo containing a pack of 2015 Phungo cards and all the "random" inserts that come with it.  I was very surprised to return home from work last week and find a package from Phungo World Headquarters.  Surely, this couldn't be the 2016 Phungo release, so early in the season.  As a premium brand, PWHQ usually waits until late in the season or even after the season to unleash its awesomeness on the collecting world.  But it's an early release this year!  2016 Phungo is live!

This is the eighth Phungo pack of cards I've opened since 2009, and it's always a pleasure to see what surprises await.  The base cards feature photographs taken at games attended by Team Phungo, and I was very happy to receive the short-printed Bob Dernier "cropped" variation in my pack which lists him as a member of the Phillies.  The Mike Trout has already disappeared into my son's Trout binder.

2016 Phungo #1
2016 Phungo #20
2016 Phungo #30
2016 Phungo #51
I also received a number of cards featuring the current Phillies team, and these are all welcome additions to my 2016 Phillies binder.  Unfortunately, my copy of the Bobby Shantz card was not the rare parallel version featuring a blue (or red) autograph of Team Phungo's founder and creative force. Maybe next year.

I should also mention that I love this year's design.  The wood-grained border with the circular inset reminds me of the 1958 Hires Root Beer set.

The "inserts" are always fun too.  Here are four of the non-Phungo cards that I needed for my Phillies collection.  There were a few non-Phungo Phillies cards that I already have in my collection, but these have quickly disappeared into the Phillies binders of my two sons.  Excellent job once again by Team Phungo, and I'm very grateful to be on their mailing list!

2003 Fleer Tradition Update #U164 Nick Punto

Athletics 3, Phillies 1
Game 154 - Late Friday Night, September 19th in Oakland
Record - 70-84, 5th Place, 19 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Jon Lester shut down the Phillies offense and the A's won, 3-1.

What It Means:  This game was way more important for the A's than the Phillies, and the win allowed the A's to regain the lead in the A.L. Wild Card standings.  If the season ended today, here's who I would be rooting for to win it all, in descending order:

Angels, Orioles, Pirates, Royals, A's, Dodgers, Tigers, Cardinals, Giants, Nationals

Like the rest of Millville, I'll be pulling for Mike Trout and the Angels throughout the postseason.  That being said, I'd love to see an Orioles-Pirates World Series, and I'd be rooting for the Orioles to avenge their losses in the 1971 and 1979 World Series.  I'm also rooting for the Nationals to be swept out of the division series.  The management and staff of The Phillies Room are not fans of the Nationals.

What Happened:  Ryan Howard's 22nd home run, coming in the fourth inning against Lester, was the only offense mustered by the Phillies in this game.

Featured Card:  There was a Nick Punto sighting!  Phillies Room favorite Punto entered the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement at second base.  Since being traded to the Twins on December 3, 2003 in the Eric Milton deal, Punto has appeared in the postseason with the 2006 and 2009 Twins, the 2011 Cardinals (winning a ring) and the 2013 Dodgers.

Phillies in the Postseason - Part Two

2001 Fleer Platinum #568
Two more teams had their seasons end recently.  While we wait for Game 1 of the 2013 World Series between the Red Sox and the Cardinals, here's a very brief look at the ex-Phillies playing in the postseason with the Dodgers.

Los Angeles Dodgers - N.L. West Champions - Lost N.L.C.S. to the Cardinals, 4-2
Nick Punto (2001-2003), inexplicably appearing in his 4th postseason, appeared sparingly for the Dodgers.  Used mostly as a late inning defensive replacement at shortstop, Punto did get the start at short spelling an injured Hanley Ramirez in Game 2 of the N.L.C.S.  In total, he hit .333 (2 for 6) with a double and four strike outs.

Michael Young (2013) joined the Dodgers at the end of August after a decent partial season with the Phillies.  This was the fourth straight year Young was appearing in the postseason, having reached the previous three seasons with the Rangers.  Young appeared in 9 of the Dodgers 10 postseason games either as a pinch-hitter or a late inning replacement at first or shortstop.  He batted .100 (1 for 10) with a strikeout so first base coach Davey Lopes (coach, 2007-2010) didn't get to see him very often.

Detroit Tigers - A.L. Central Champions - Lost A.L.C.S. to the Red Sox, 4-2
Not one member of the Tigers roster or coaching staff has ever suited up for the Phillies.  Manager (and now ex-manager) Jim Leyland was the favorite to become the Phillies new manager in 2005 before Charlie Manuel got the job.  I wonder if he'd make a good bullpen coach?

2012 Topps Phillies #PHI7 John Mayberry, Jr.

Phillies 4, Nationals 2
Game 127 - Saturday Night, August 25th in Philadelphia
Record 60-67, 3rd Place, 17 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  John Mayberry, Jr. was the offensive star again, driving in three runs, as the Phillies defeated the first place Nationals, 4-2.

What It Means:  The Phils go for the sweep this afternoon as they try to pull just six games under .500.

What Went Right:  In the first, Mayberry followed Chase Utley's RBI-single with an RBI-single of his own.  His solo home run in the sixth put the Phils ahead for good, and he added an RBI-sac fly in the eighth to give the Phils an insurance run.

Roy Halladay earned his eighth win, allowing just two runs on seven hits in his seven innings of work.  86 of Halladay's 105 pitches were strikes - which is good indication that Halladay is getting his old form back.  Antonio Bastardo struck out the side in a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth for his 29th save.

Featured Cards:  I'm quickly running out of Mayberry's cards to feature, so here is his Topps Phillies card (referenced a few days ago by Steve F.) featuring a closer cropped photo than his card in this year's base Topps set.

The Phillies Room was saddened to learn of the passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong yesterday.  Here's a post from three years ago, taking a look back at what the Phillies were doing the day Mr. Armstrong took his one giant leap.

* * *

And of course the big news in baseball yesterday was the blockbuster deal sending Nick Punto from the struggling Red Sox to the surging Dodgers.  Some other players were involved as well.  This season definitely has not gone as planned for the Phillies or the Red Sox, and the long-awaited 1915 World Series rematch will have to wait one more year.

Where the Ex-Phillies Are - A.L. East

2003 Upper Deck 40-Man #668, #677, #681 and #682
The folks sitting in Section 36 are in for a treat this year, as the Red Sox have decided to stage a mini-reunion of Phillies from the early '00s.  Sadly, the Sox tried to recruit Jose Mesa, Amaury Telemaco and Robert Person, but those pitchers respectfully declined.  Here are the ex-Phillies in camp this spring with the A.L. East teams.

Baltimore Orioles
Bench Coach John Russell (1984-1988), Outfielder Endy Chavez (2005)

Dane Sardinha (2010-2011) had been tentatively signed by the Orioles, but the catcher failed his physical this week and was uninvited from Spring Training.

Boston Red Sox
Infielder Nick Punto (2001-2003), Pitchers Brandon Duckworth* (2001-2003), Vicente Padilla* (2000-2005) and Carlos Silva* (2002-2003)

New York Yankees
Pitcher Freddy Garcia (2007), Infielder Russell Branyan* (2007), Outfielder Raul Ibanez (2009-2011)

Tampa Bay Rays
Third Base Coach Tom Foley (1985-1986)

Toronto Blue Jays
Hitting Coach Dwayne Murphy (1989), First Base Coach Torey Lovullo (1999), Outfielder Ben Francisco (2009-2011), Pitchers Andrew Carpenter* (2008-2010) and Nelson Figueroa* (2001; 2010), Infielder Brian Bocock* (2010)

2001 Fleer Genuine #109 Nick Punto

Cardinals 3, Phillies 1
Game 40 - Monday Night, May 16th in St. Louis

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies lifelessly fell to the Cardinals tonight, 3-1, losing their third game in a row for the first time in 2011.

What It Means:  I was bored tonight watching the Phillies play and that doesn't happen often.  The Phils are now 25-15 and (as I write this) they have just a game and a half lead over the Marlins.  The offense will try to get it going tomorrow night off Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia (5-0, with a 1.89 ERA).  Yikes.

What Went Wrong:  Cliff Lee had to work with a postage stamp-sized strike zone tonight and walked a career-high six batters.  Entering into the game, he had walked seven in 52 1/3 innings so far this season.  He was saddled with low run support (again) and his fourth loss of the season.

Nick Punto victimized his original team, knocking in the Cardinals first run in the fourth and scoring their third run in the seventh.  The Phillies lone run came in the second when Ben Francisco's RBI-single drove home John Mayberry, Jr. from second.

Featured Card:  Normally a Nick Punto baseball card would cheer me up, but it's not doing the trick tonight.  There are Punto cards littered throughout the hundreds of 2001 baseball card sets, touting Punto as a top prospect, or in the case of this Fleer Genuine card, as having a "Genuine Upside."

Unfortunately for the Phillies, and their fans, that upside became evident after Punto had left the organization.  GM Ed Wade shipped Punto and Carlos Silva to the Twins in December 2003 for starting pitcher Eric Milton.  Milton lasted one season with the Phillies, putting together a respectable 14-6 record on an '04 team that finished 10 games behind the Braves and cost Larry Bowa his job.

Punto played seven years with the Twins, and went to the A.L.D.S. four times with the team as a valuable utility player.  He signed this past off-season with the Cardinals, and I can just about guarantee he'll hit for the cycle or drive in the game-winning run at some point this year against the Phillies.

Transaction:  Roy Oswalt was activated from the disabled list before the game and Vance Worley was optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley.  The team's preference is to keep Worley stretched out as a starter just in case Oswalt and/or Joe Blanton have injury relapses.
