1971 Topps Missing Links:  Throughout the season in these series preview posts, I'll be featuring 18 different cards I've created for players and coaches who suited up for the Phillies in 1971 but did not receive a card (or their own card) within the 1971 Topps set.  Coach George Myatt is the first card from this insert set, and Myatt was the team's third base coach under manager Frank Lucchesi from 1970 until both men were relieved of their duties in 1972.  Myatt had been a coach with the club since 1964.

For opponents with no cards in the 1971 Topps set, or where I've run out of representative cards for any given team, I've once again created a Fan Favorites set.  Granted, former pitching coach Rick Kranitz may not be considered a fan favorite in most circles, but I've taken some liberties where cards were needed - especially for some of the expansion teams.

2018 Chachi #27 Phillies Coaches - Jose David Flores

#3
Jose David Flores
First Base Coach

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'0"  Weight:  185

First Phillies Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue #3
First Phillies Team Issued Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue #3
Newest Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue 2 #3

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  December 15, 2017 - Phillies Winter Meetings Recap . . . Finally, Gabe Kapler's coaching staff was completed with the addition of Jose Flores as the first base, infield and baserunning coach.  Flores had been the Cubs' minor league infield coordinator for the past five seasons.  I'm now fairly sure this is not the same Jose Flores who played in the Phillies system between 1994 and 1999.  That Jose Flores was Jose Carlos Flores and he was traded to the Mariners in 1999 for Domingo Cedeno.  The new Phillies coach is Jose David Flores.

2016 Phillies Team Issue #33
First Mention on The Phillies Room:  October 23, 2015 - Rick Kranitz was named the team's new bullpen coach, taking over for the departed Rod Nichols.  Kranitz was the Brewers pitching coach for the past five seasons (2011-2015) and he also served in that role with the Orioles (2008-2010) and Marlins (2006-2007).  Kranitz has been appearing on minor league and team issued baseball cards since 1980, but he's never been featured on a mainstream release.

2018 Phillies Team Issue #8
First Mention on The Phillies Room:  November 12, 2017 - New manager Gabe Kapler officially added three coaches to his staff on Friday . . .

John Mallee returns to the Phillies organization after a 25-year absence.  Mallee was originally drafted by the Phillies in the 12th round of the June 1991 amateur player draft.  He played in parts of two seasons with the Martinsville (rookie) and Spartanburg (Low A) Phillies teams, appearing in 115 games and hitting .208.  More recently, Mallee served as the hitting coach for the Marlins (2010-2011), Astros (2013-2014) and Cubs (2015-2017).  Mallee was let go by the Cubs following their loss to the Dodgers in the playoffs.  He replaces Matt Stairs, who left the Phillies to fill the hitting coach position with the Padres.

First Phillies Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue #59
First Phillies Team Issued Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue #59
Newest Card:  2018 Phillies Team Issue 2 #59

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  December 6, 2017 - The Phillies' 2018 coaching staff continues to take shape with the addition of Rob Thomson as the bench coach, Chris Young as the assistant pitching coach and Rick Kranitz officially getting the title of pitching coach.  At this point, only a first base coach is needed to round out Gabe Kapler's staff.

Thomson had served as the Yankees bench coach for four seasons (2008, 2015-2017) and their third base coach for six seasons (2009-2014).  He was one of the finalists for the Yankees' managerial vacancy, and that position was recently filled by Aaron Boone.  Thomson played four seasons in the Tigers' minor league system between 1985 and 1988.  His baseball cards can be found in a bunch of Tigers and Yankees minor league team sets and he received his sole mainstream card within 2009 Topps Heritage on a Yankees' coaches floating head card.

2017 Topps Allen & Ginter #29 Maikel Franco

Mets 7Phillies 4 (11)
Game 161 - Saturday Night, September 30th in Philadelphia
Record - 65-96, 5th place, 32 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run home run off Adam Morgan in the 11th, sending the Mets to a chilly 7-4 victory.

What It Means:  The two teams, both apparently with lame duck managers, will limp to the finish line with Sunday's season finale.

What Happened:  Rhys Hoskins tied the game at four in the seventh with an RBI single and came within inches of winning it with a walk-off home run in the 10th.  The wind blowing in stalled what should have been a home run and left fielder Brandon Nimmo caught the ball right in front of the wall.  Maikel Franco hit his second home run (23) in as many days.  Cabrera continues to crush the Phillies, going 4 for 6 in this game with four RBIs.  Morgan had been nearly unhittable in recent outings before Cabrera's game-winning home run.

Featured Card:  It's been a disappointing season for Franco, and with the infield logjam (Franco, Freddy Galvis, J.P. Crawford, Cesar Hernandez, Scott Kingery) some decisions will need to be made about the once promising prospect's future.

Field Report:  Barring a last minute decision to head to this afternoon's season finale matinee, this was my final game of the 2017 season.  As has become our pattern, Doug and I arrived early and Doug stationed himself at the corner of the Phillies dugout.

He received autographs from coaches Rick Kranitz, Mickey Morandini and Juan Samuel, with Sammy signing both his mini bat and a 1985 Topps card.  Samuel actually recognizes my son at this point and asked him if would be back for Sunday's game.  Henderson Alvarez was surprisingly signing before his start and he added his signature to one of Doug's baseballs.  Andres Blanco also stopped over and signed for Doug and a few dedicated fans.

After the game started, we made our way over to Bull's BBQ to get one last autograph (and picture) from Greg Luzinski.  It was cold, but we made all the way to the end of the game, watching the final pitches of the 11th inning from behind the left field foul pole.  There may have been less than a thousand fans remaining at that point and most of them seemed to be Mets fans.

I attended 18 games this season and finished with a personal record of 9-9.  I'll be working hard over the offseason to improve upon that record in 2018.

2016 Phillies Team Issue - 2nd Edition

Number of Cards:  44
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  Following the standard formula for team-issued photo card sets in recent years, the front of the cards feature the player's name, position and uniform number on a band across the bottom of the card.  The band for this set is wood-grained, using a design element last used for the 2012 first edition team set.  A Phillies logo appears on every card in the top left.  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

With the exception of the Cody Asche card, all photos used for these cards are from the first month and a half of the 2016 season.

How Distributed:  The second series set went on sale at Citizens Bank Park on or around May 20th for $5 a set.  I attended the game on May 17th, and I'm fairly certain the first series set was still on sale at that point.

An update set was sold at the ballpark beginning with the August 12th Alumni Weekend series.  The update set removes four cards and adds six cards to the set.

Complete Standard Checklist (38):  The cards are unnumbered, but I've presented them below ordered by uniform number.

  • 2 - Tyler Goeddel
  • 3 - David Lough
  • 4 - Andres Blanco
  • 5 - Steve Henderson CO
  • 6 - Ryan Howard

  • 41 - Jimmy Paredes
  • 52 - Severino Gonzalez
  • 56 - Zach Eflin
  • 61 - Edubray Ramos
  • 25 - Jim Thome (Alumni)**
One and Done (0 for now)
First Appearances (7):  Eflin, Gonzalez, Joseph, Murray, Neris, Paredes, Ramos
Returning Players (26):  Araujo, Asche, Bailey, Blanco, Bourjos, Burriss, Eickhoff, Franco, Galvis, Garcia, Goeddel, Gomez, Hellickson, C. Hernandez, D. Hernandez, Herrera, Hinojosa, Howard, Lough, Morgan, Nola, Oberholtzer, Ruf, Ruiz, Rupp, Velasquez

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Manager (1):  Mackanin
Coaches (7):  Bowa, Henderson, Kranitz, McClure, McLaren, Morandini, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1):  The Phanatic is shown wearing the day week day alternate red jersey top.
Broadcasters (1):  After an absence in the first series, the broadcasters card returns with Tom McCarthy, Larry Andersen, Ben Davis, Scott Franzke, Gregg Murphy, Mike Schmidt, Matt Stairs and Jim Jackson.
Other Cards (1):  Thome (Alumni Card)

The following players who were in the first series set have been dropped from this second series set (6):  Bobby LaFromboise, Charlie Morton, Edward Mujica, James Russell, Daniel Stumpf and Darnell Sweeney.  Morton is out for the season with an injury, Stumpf has been suspended for PEDs and the other four players are all currently with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

The following players/cards have been added (4):  Elvis Araujo, Colton Murray, Hector Neris, Broadcasters.

Variations/Rarities (6/13/16):  Fellow collector Steve F. sent the scan below of cards for Joseph and Jimmy Paredes, which were available at the ALS Festival on June 9th.  Hopefully these cards make it into the sets currently for sale at the ballpark.  (They did - see above!)
  • 19 - Tommy Joseph
  • 41 - Jimmy Paredes

Update Set (8/13/16):  On August 12th, I purchased an update set which added cards of the six players listed above and removed the cards for the following four players:  David Lough, Emmanuel Burriss, Elvis Araujo and Dalier Hinojosa.

Update (8/29/16):  As pointed out by Steve F. in his comment the Thome card should be considered a short-print, as it was only intended to be included within the photo card set during Alumni Weekend.

Update (12/15/18):  At the recent Phillies holiday sale, an annual event held at Citizens Bank Park, Steve found another rare version of a card in this set's style.  There's a Tommy Joseph card available showing him wearing the team's alternate, home day-game uniform.

  • 19 -  Tommy Joseph (alternate uniform)

2015 Phillies Team Issue - 2nd Edition

Number of Cards:  40
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  Keeping with a theme that's been used for the past two seasons, the card fronts feature full color photos with a bottom border containing the player's name, number and position.  The blue border used for the first series set has been replaced by a red border and a simple Phillies "P".  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  The second series set went on sale at Citizens Bank Park on June 2, 2015.  Sets are available for sale for $5.

Complete Standard Checklist:  The cards are unnumbered, but I've presented them below ordered by uniform number.

  • 2 - Ben Revere
  • 3 - Jeff Francoeur
  • 4 - Andres Blanco
  • 5 - Pat Burrell (Alumni)
  • 5 - Steve Henderson CO
  • 6 - Ryan Howard
  • 7 - Maikel Franco
  • 8 - Juan Samuel CO
  • 9 - Domonic Brown
  • 10 - Larry Bowa CO
  • 12 - John Mizerock CO
  • 13 - Freddy Galvis
  • 16 - Cesar Hernandez
  • 18 - Darin Ruf
  • 22 - Bob McClure CO
  • 23 - Ryne Sandberg MG
  • 24 - Grady Sizemore
  • 25 - Cody Asche
  • 26 - Chase Utley
  • 29 - Cameron Rupp
  • 30 - Justin De Fratus
  • 31 - Jerome Williams
  • 34 - Aaron Harang
  • 35 - Cole Hamels
  • 37 - Odubel Herrera
  • 38 - Chad Billingsley
  • 40 - Dustin McGowan
  • 45 - Pete Mackanin CO
  • 46 - Jeanmar Gomez
  • 47 - Sean O'Sullivan
  • 51 - Carlos Ruiz
  • 53 - Ken Giles
  • 54 - Rod Nichols CO
  • 55 - David Buchanan
  • 57 - Luis Garcia
  • 58 - Jonathan Papelbon
  • 59 - Elvis Araujo
  • 63 - Jake Diekman
  • Phillie Phanatic
  • Phillies Broadcasters
One and Done (1):  McGowan
First Appearances (2):  Araujo and O'Sullivan
Returning Players (26):  Asche, Billingsley, Blanco, Brown, Buchanan, De Fratus, Diekman, Franco, Francoeur, Galvis, Garcia, Giles, Gomez, Hamels, Harang, Hernandez, Herrera, Howard, Papelbon, Revere, Ruf, Ruiz, Rupp, Sizemore, Utley, Williams

I wouldn't be surprised if Araujo, McGowan and O'Sullivan get bumped from the First Appearances designation up to the One and Done spot.  The younger Araujo has the best chance of receiving a second Phillies baseball card.  Asche's card designates him as a left fielder, despite the fact he had only played three career games at the position prior to this set's release.  Sizemore was released the day before this set was released.

Brown is in the set even though as of the set's release date he had yet to appear in a game with the Phillies in 2015.  Brown has been exiled to Triple-A Lehigh Valley thus far into the season.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Manager (1):  Sandberg
Coaches (7):  Bowa, Henderson, Mackanin, McClure, Mizerock, Nichols, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1)
Broadcasters (1):  Features the same photo as the first series with announcers Tom McCarthy, Ben Davis, Larry Andersen, Scott Franzke, Jim Jackson, Matt Stairs, Mike Schmidt and Gregg Murphy.
Other Cards (1):  Burrell (Alumni Card)

The second series replaces the Charlie Manuel alumni card (found within the first series) with an alumni card for this year's Wall of Fame inductee Burrell.

Variations/Rarities:  On July 31st, I purchased a second series photo card set from the ballpark that included an Aaron Nola card on top.  The rest of the cards in the set were the same 40 cards as listed on the checklist above.
  • 27 - Aaron Nola

2016 ALS Festival
Photo from Rick from Jr. Phillies
Club Night
Update (6/13/16):  Fellow collector Steve F. obtained an Aaron Altherr card in the style of this set at the 2016 ALS Festival held on June 9, 2016. The card is blank-backed and was most likely printed solely in order for Altherr to have a card for autograph requests.  Collector Rick also informed me that blank backed cards are available for Franco and Rupp.

Update (9/16/16):  Fellow collector Rick e-mailed me on September 16th to let me know that blank-backed photo cards in the style of this set were available to Jr. Phillies Club members during the game.  From the scans sent by Rick, I've listed below the additional cards available through this promotion.
  • 17 - Peter Bourjos (posed photo)
  • 23 - Aaron Altherr
  • 39 - Adam Morgan
  • 45 - Pete Mackanin MG (different photo - white jersey)
  • 48 - Jared Eickhoff
Update (12/15/18): At the recent Phillies holiday sale, an annual event held at Citizens Bank Park, Steve found even more rare versions of cards in this set's style.  These three coaches joined the staff in 2016, so presumably these cards were produced during the 2015-2016 offseason.
  • 9 - John McLaren CO (posed photo)
  • 12 - Mickey Morandini CO (posed photo)
  • 33 - Rick Kranitz CO (posed photo)
Trivia:  As I laid out in this post, this is the earliest a second series set has ever been released since the team started issuing multiple team issued sets back in 2010.  Hector Neris and Severino Gonzalez are the only members (so far) of the 2015 Phillies not to appear in either series of team issued sets.

Resources:  Thanks to fellow Phillies collectors Steve F. and Rick for giving me a head's up that this set was for sale at the ballpark.
