1971 Topps Missing Links:  Throughout the season in these series preview posts, I'll be featuring 18 different cards I've created for players and coaches who suited up for the Phillies in 1971 but did not receive a card (or their own card) within the 1971 Topps set.  Coach George Myatt is the first card from this insert set, and Myatt was the team's third base coach under manager Frank Lucchesi from 1970 until both men were relieved of their duties in 1972.  Myatt had been a coach with the club since 1964.

For opponents with no cards in the 1971 Topps set, or where I've run out of representative cards for any given team, I've once again created a Fan Favorites set.  Granted, former pitching coach Rick Kranitz may not be considered a fan favorite in most circles, but I've taken some liberties where cards were needed - especially for some of the expansion teams.

Game 11 - 2018 Stadium Club #60 Aaron Altherr

Nationals 15, Phillies 1
Game 11 - Wednesday Night, April 10th in Philadelphia
Record - 7-4, Tied for 1st place, 1 game ahead of the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Nationals destroyed Nick Pivetta and the Phillies, winning a 15-1 laugher.

What It Means:  At one point, before the Phillies scored a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Nationals had scored 25 unanswered runs going back to the Tuesday night debacle.  This was the team's first series loss of the season.

What Happened:  Pivetta's struggles continue.  He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits, and his ERA after three starts is 9.45.  Jeremy Hellickson and three Nationals relievers held the Phillies to three singles.

Featured Card:  The best pitcher of the night for the Phillies was back-up outfielder Aaron Altherr, who came on to pitch the top of the ninth.  Hitting 90 on the radar gun, Altherr allowed a run on two hits but also struck out two batters - Brian Dozier and Yan Gomes.  Per a great Tweet from Jayson Stark, the last Phillies position player to strike out two batters in a game was Greg Gross on June 6, 1986.

Game 10 - 2019 Phillies Team Issue #61 Edubray Ramos

Nationals 10, Phillies 6 (10)
Game 10 - Tuesday Night, April 9th in Philadelphia
Record - 7-3, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Despite a strong offense, Aaron Nola's struggles and the bullpen's inability to record outs late in the game led to a 10-6 defeat at the hands of the Nationals.

What It Means:  There will undoubtedly be more of this as the season progresses, but the Phillies have now given away two of their total of three losses.  This game should have resulted in a W.  Up by 6-0 after five innings, the Nationals scored 10 unanswered runs.

What Happened:  Nola went 6 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned).  Edubray Ramos surrendered a solo home run to Victor Robles with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.  Jose Alvarez plodded through a four-run 10th inning.

Maikel Franco (4) and Bryce Harper (4) had homered earlier in the game, and Jean Segura added a two-run triple.

Featured Card:  To date, Ramos has escaped any mainstream Topps releases and his only Phillies baseball cards can be found in the team-issued photo card sets dating back to 2016.

Field Report:  There were six of us in attendance on Tuesday night, and it was a gorgeous night for baseball.  Jenna and Ben hosted Jenna's parents in special Diamond Club seats in honor of her Dad's birthday.  Doug and I trekked up to Section 315 where we were greeted with the welcome sight of people outnumbering empty blue seats.  Before the game, Doug added a few more Scott Kingery autographs to his collection, but once again missing out on an elusive Harper signature.
2019 Topps Heritage #186
2019 Topps Gypsy Queen #209

Game 9 - 2019 Topps Gypsy Queen #102 Rhys Hoskins

Phillies 4, Nationals 3
Game 9 - Monday Night, April 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 7-2, 1st place, 1 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Rhys Hoskins hit two home runs and Vince Velasquez looked solid in his first start as the Phillies hung on to beat the Nationals, 4-3.

What It Means:  With the Mets idle, this win gave the Phillies a one game lead in the East.

What Happened:  Odubel Herrera hit his first home run of the season in the fourth and Hoskins hit his fourth home run in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.  Hoskins homered again in the eighth, and that would be a key run as Pat Neshek allowed a home run to Brian Dozier in the ninth before locking down his first save of the season.  Velasquez went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.  Scott Kingery got his first start of the season at second base and had a three-hit night.

Featured Card:  Topps Gypsy Queen was released at the end of March, and it's the ninth year in a row Topps has produced this set.  Reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century release, I'm a big fan of this year's design.  Hoskins is one of 11 cards in the 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Phillies team set.

2019 Spring Training Roster - Where They Went

2019 Topps Heritage #56
This has become an annual exercise of mine, tracking where everyone ended up after the masses scattered from Clearwater.  We pay so much attention (at least I do) to every non-roster invitee addition and every prospect added to the 40-man roster, and then when the season starts it's hard to remember who even suited up for the Phillies during spring training.

When the Phillies played their first exhibition game on February 22nd, the camp head count stood at 61 players.  Ten days later, the tally increased by one with the addition of free-agent Bryce Harper.  Here's where the 62 players ended up by the time opening day rosters were set on March 28th.

Injured List (2):  Tommy Hunter and Roman Quinn.  Hunter made this list to start the season for the second year in a row.

Released (5):  Jeremy Bleich, Drew Butera, Edward Paredes, Gregorio Petit and Trevor Plouffe

Drew Butera was released on March 22nd and signed with the Colorado Rockies on March 25th.  As of this writing, the other four players released have yet to resurface with another organization.

AAA - Lehigh Valley IronPigs (25):  Lane Adams, Drew Anderson, Victor Arano, Rob Brantly, Malquin Canelo, Dylan Cozens, Austin Davis, Enyel De Los Santos, Jerad Eickhoff, Edgar Garcia, Tyler Gilbert, Phil Gosselin, Deivy Grullon, Cole Irvin, Josh Martin, Matt McBride (IL), Gift Ngoepe (IL), James Pazos, Yacksel Rios, Shane Robinson, Sean Rodriguez, JoJo Romero, Andrew Romine, Ranger Suarez and Mitch Walding

Andrew Romine was released on March 22nd, but signed back with the Phillies on a minor league contract on March 25th.

AA - Reading Fightin Phils (5):  Arquimedes Gamboa, Adam Haseley, Austin Listi, Adonis Medina and Micky Moniak

Stolen Bases:  Bryce Harper and Cesar Hernandez - 1

Wins:  Zach Eflin - 2
ERA:  Zach Eflin - 0.75
Strikeouts:  Zach Eflin - 14

Game 8 - 2019 Topps Heritage #24 Zach Eflin

Phillies 2, Twins 1
Game 8 - Sunday Afternoon, April 7th in Philadelphia
Record - 6-2, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Zach Eflin turned in a dominant pitching performance and Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run home run in the sixth, sending the Phillies to a 2-1 win over the Twins.

What It Means:  With the Mets losing their game, the Phillies retook sole possession of first place.  The Nationals come to town again for three more games beginning on Monday night.

What Happened:  Eflin improved his record to 2-0 and his ERA to 0.75 with seven innings of strong pitching.  He allowed a run on six hits while striking out five.  Hector Neris surprisingly entered the ninth inning with the one-run lead and pitched a perfect inning for his first save of the season.  Hoskins' homer was his third of 2019.

Featured Card:  If Eflin keeps pitching like this, he should start to receive some more baseball cards in upcoming Topps sets.  Dating back to 2016, this is only his second card to appear in a mainstream Topps release.  His first came in the 2016 Topps Heritage High Numbers release.

Game 7 - 2015 Grandstand Clearwater Threshers #2 Willians Astudillo

Twins 6, Phillies 2
Game 7 - Saturday Afternoon, April 6th in Philadelphia
Record - 5-2, 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Missed opportunities and a shaky bullpen doomed the Phillies, as they dropped the middle game of the series to the Twins, 6-2.

What It Means:  The Phils will go for the series win this afternoon with Zach Eflin on the mound.

What Happened:  The offense had opportunities for big innings in the 6th and 8th innings, but couldn't come up with a big hit.  Bryce Harper was thrown out at home to end the 6th inning, as he was trying to score on a Cesar Hernandez fly ball.  With the bases loaded in the 8th, Hernandez grounded out to first to end the inning.

Jake Arrieta pitched seven innings, allowing three runs in the 3rd on a wild pitch and back-to-back home runs to Max Kepler and Willians Astudillo.  Seranthony Dominguez allowed a 3-run home run to Eddie Rosario in the 9th, putting the game away for the Twins.

Featured Card:  Astudillo came up through the Phillies system, playing for their minor league teams between 2009 and 2015.  Now a super utility player for the Twins, Astudillo was one of the first autographs my son Doug added to his collection at a BlueClaws game back in 2014.

Game 6 - 2019 Topps Opening Day #107 Rhys Hoskins

Phillies 10, Twins 4
Game 6 - Friday Night, April 5th in Philadelphia
Record - 5-1, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  A five-run 1st inning propelled the Phillies to an eventual 10-4 win over the Twins on a cold, rainy night in South Philly.

What It Means:  Throughout the first five innings of this game, it absolutely poured rain and it's amazing to me the teams played through it and the game went a full 9 innings.

What Happened:  Twins starter Jake Odorizzi was chased after retiring just two batters with the big blow being Maikel Franco's bases clearing double.  Aaron Altherr added a pinch-double in the 5th, and Rhys Hoskins capped the scoring with a 3-run single in the 7th.  The third run came courtesy of aggressive base running from Bryce Harper, who scored from first on the hit.

Nick Pivetta got the win, laboring through 5 innings of work.  He gave up a pair of home runs, 9 total hits and 4 runs (3 earned).

Featured Card:  Hoskins had been somewhat left out of the early season hit parade from the Phillies offense, so his 3 for 4 night with 4 RBIs was a welcome sight.

Game 5 - 1919-1921 W514 #55 Dode Paskert

Nationals 9, Phillies 8
Game 5 - Wednesday Afternoon, April 3rd in Washington
Record - 4-1, 2nd place, 1/2 game behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  A costly error from Rhys Hoskins and 9th inning wildness from David Robertson led to a deflating 9-8 loss to the Nationals.

What It Means:  The Phillies won't be in first place wire to wire as this loss coupled with the Mets win knocked them out of first place.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola had a rare shaky outing, lasting just 3 innings and allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, including 3 home runs.  Trailing 6-4, the Phillies took a 8-6 lead in the 8th when Andrew McCutchen hit a bases-clearing double and Jean Segura followed with an RBI single.  With two outs in the bottom of the 8th, the Nationals scored the tying run when Hoskins missed an easy throw from pitcher Seranthony Dominguez on an Adam Eaton soft grounder.

In the 9th, Robertson allowed a lead-off single and then three straight walks to hand the Nationals their win.

Featured Card:  Amazingly enough, and per this Jayson Stark Tweet, this is the first season the Phillies have started 4-0 since 1915.  Dode Paskert played 109 games for that N.L. Championship club, driving in 39 runs.  This is his strip card from the W514 set, released between 1919 and 1921.  Due to the loss, I went from trying to figure out which McCutchen card to scan for this post, to looking up the stats of a dude named Dode.

Wednesday, April 3, 2019

Game 4 - 2019 Topps Heritage #125 Maikel Franco

Phillies 8, Nationals 2
Game 4 - Tuesday Night, April 2nd in Washington
Record - 4-0, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Bryce Harper paced the Phillies offense in his return to Washington in this 8-2 win over the Nationals.

What It Means:  At some point over the next 13 years, I imagine I'll reach the point where the thought of having Harper on the Phillies stops making me giddy.  But I'm not there yet.  Harper was loudly booed by the Nationals fans, striking out in his first two plate appearances against Max Scherzer.  But then he doubled in the 5th, had an RBI single in the 6th and hit a mammoth 458-foot home run off Jeremy Hellickson in the 8th.  He capped his big night with an epic bat flip that made Odubel Herrera blush.  This team is fun to watch and Harper is right in the middle of all of it.

What Happened:  Zach Eflin went toe to toe with Scherzer for five innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 9.  Harper and Jean Segura both had 3 RBI nights and Herrera added 3 hits of his own.

Featured Card:  He's been called baseball's best eight hole hitter, and Maikel Franco's 2 for 2 night raised his season average to .545.  It was Franco's 2nd inning home run that got the Phillies on the board first and until Harper's shot in the 8th, he alone held the team lead in home runs with 3.  Franco is still the improbable team RBI leader with 8.

Game 3 - 2019 Topps Bryce Harper Art Card #B

Phillies 5, Braves 1
Game 3 - Sunday Night, March 31st in Philadelphia
Record - 3-0, 1st place, 1 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Bryce Harper homered again, leading the Phillies to a 5-1 win over the Braves.

What It Means:  The Phillies swept the Braves, giving them sole possession of first place and leaving them as the only remaining undefeated team in baseball.  As this game was televised on ESPN, we electing to mute the TV and listen to Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen call the game on the radio.

What Happened:  Jake Arrieta labored through the early innings, but recovered to ultimately pitch 6 innings, allowing a run on 3 hits and 6 walks.  He also struck out 6.  Andrew McCutchen and Harper both hit their second home runs of the season.  With the score tied at 1-1 in the 5th, the Phillies took the lead when Rhys Hoskins walked with the bases loaded.  Hoskins was later drilled following Harper's home run, leading to the ejection of Braves pitcher Shane Carle.

Featured Card:  I featured Card A in the two-card Topps Bryce Harper Art Card set back in this post, and here's Card B.
