Phillies 4, Nationals 3
Game 9 - Monday Night, April 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 7-2, 1st place, 1 game ahead of the Mets
One Sentence Summary: Rhys Hoskins hit two home runs and Vince Velasquez looked solid in his first start as the Phillies hung on to beat the Nationals, 4-3.
What It Means: With the Mets idle, this win gave the Phillies a one game lead in the East.
What Happened: Odubel Herrera hit his first home run of the season in the fourth and Hoskins hit his fourth home run in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Hoskins homered again in the eighth, and that would be a key run as Pat Neshek allowed a home run to Brian Dozier in the ninth before locking down his first save of the season. Velasquez went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Scott Kingery got his first start of the season at second base and had a three-hit night.
Featured Card: Topps Gypsy Queen was released at the end of March, and it's the ninth year in a row Topps has produced this set. Reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century release, I'm a big fan of this year's design. Hoskins is one of 11 cards in the 2018 Topps Gypsy Queen Phillies team set.
