2022 Topps #316 |
Game 55 - Tuesday Night, June 7th in Milwaukee
Record - 26-29, 3rd Place, 10 1/2 games behind the Mets
One Sentence Summary: Down 2-1 and facing dominant Brewers' closer Josh Hader in the ninth inning, Alec Bohm and Matt Vierling hit home runs to send the Phillies to a dramatic 3-2 win.
What It Means: A busy work week coupled with lots of youth baseball action means I'm playing catch-up with some of these game summary posts. Unlike in weeks' past however, I don't mind re-living the past during a winning streak.
What Happened: Hader, one of the game's best, had yet to give up a run in 19 appearances and 17 2/3 innings before Bohm's blast. Soon after Bohm tied the game, Vierling delivered his pinch-hit home run, the eventual game winner. Corey Knebel decided to make the bottom of the ninth interesting, walking the bases loaded before getting Pablo Reyes to strike out, ending the game. Ranger Suarez had pitched well before the ninth inning heroics, going seven strong innings and allowing a pair of runs while striking out five.
Featured Card: Vierling was on the roster solely due an injury (see below), and his huge home run was his first of the season. He's been all over the Topps releases so far in 2022, and this is his base card from the flagship release.
Transactions: Johan Camargo (inf) landed on the injured list with a right knee strain, and Zack Wheeler (rhp) was placed on the paternity list. Vierling (of) was recalled and Scott Kingery (inf) had his contract purchased from Lehigh Valley.
