One Sentence Summary:  Tylor Megill and a quartet of Mets relievers no-hit the Phillies in this 3-0 loss.

What It Means:  It was the 20th time in franchise history the Phillies had been no-hit, the first no-hitter thrown against them since the Dodgers' Josh Beckett did it in 2014, and the first time the Phillies had been on the receiving end of a combined no-hitter.  It only counts as one loss, and the Phillies will try to start a new winning streak tonight.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out nine.  We liked the Phillies' chances of getting a hit in the ninth, as they had Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto coming up.  All three were struck out swinging by Edwin Diaz.

Featured Card:  Megill pitched the first five innings, with Drew Smith, Joely Rodriguez, Seth Lugo and Diaz preserving the no-hit bid.  This is inexplicably the second time this month Rodriguez is the unlikely featured card in a game summary post, as I featured a minor league card of his following an early season loss to the Mets.  This is Rodriguez's 2017 Chachi card.

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler turned in his first positive start of the season and the Phillies completed a four-game sweep of the Rockies with this win.

What It Means:  It was the Phillies first four-game sweep at home since last May against the Brewers.  The team heads to Citi Field next for a three-game weekend set against the first place Mets.

What Happened:  Wheeler won his first game of 2022 with six strong innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.  Alec Bohm contributed an RBI ground out in the second and a solo home run, his second, in the fourth inning.  In the third, Roman Quinn reached on a bunt single, stole second and third bases, and scored on a Rhys Hoskins sacrifice fly.  The Phillies scored four more runs in a sloppy seventh inning with four walks, a hit batter (Bryce Harper with the bases loaded), an error and a single from Jean Segura.

Featured Card:  After three fairly bad outings in which he didn't make it past the fifth inning and his ERA was up to 8.53, it was a relief to see Wheeler turn in this performance on Thursday.  He walked four batters, but his velocity was back up and looked more like the pitcher from 2021 who finished second in the Cy Young voting.

One Sentence Summary:  On a cold and windy night, the offense supported Ranger Suarez in another win against the Rockies.

What It Means:  Game time temperature was 49 degrees, and it dipped into the 30s by the time the final pitch was thrown.  Fans attending this game should be commended for their dedication.

What Happened:  Suarez was the beneficiary of the solid offense, as he went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.  Five Phillies relievers shut down the Rockies the rest of the way.  Odubel Herrera, back in the lead-off spot, hit a home run in the bottom of the first and added a sacrifice fly in the second to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.  In the sixth, back-up catcher Garrett Stubbs collected his first career triple, driving in Didi Gregorius in the process.  Nick Castellanos, Alec Bohm, Gregorius and Stubbs all had two hits.

Featured Card:  Bryce Harper tested his throwing arm before the game, and his elbow is still sore enough to keep him out of the outfield.  Fortunately, with the DH now in the National League, the Phillies are able to have Harper's bat in the line-up on a daily basis.  He went 3 for 4 in this game with a triple and two runs scored.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies offense supported Zach Eflin's strong start in this 10-3 win over the Rockies.

What It Means:  A busy week at my chosen profession means I'm playing catch-up with these game summary posts, and I'm happy  knowing there's a few more wins on the way.

What Happened:  Eflin pitched six solid innings, allowing a run on a Charlie Blackmon home run in the sixth.  He struck out three, including his career strikeout number 500 against Ryan McMahon in the third inning.  The Phillies led by as much as 7-0 after five innings, with RBI singles from Didi Gregorius, Alec Bohm and Jean Segura, and RBI doubles from Odubel Herrera and Rhys Hoskins.  Herrera also hit a two-run home run in the sixth.

Featured Card:  Eflin is a free agent following the season, and it will be interesting to see if he's back with the Phillies or if he goes elsewhere on a lucrative contract.  Here's his card from the retail Topps Phillies team set, which mirrors his Series One flagship release.

Transaction:  Damon Jones (lhp) was recalled from Lehigh Valley and Bailey Falter (lhp) was optioned.  Ronald Torreyes (inf), a surprisingly key member of the 2021 Phillies squad, requested and was granted his release.  Torreyes had been playing for the Triple-A IronPigs, and in 10 games he batted .171 (6 for 35).  I'll take this opportunity to update what will be a running list of additions and departures throughout the 2022 season.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies delivered a few timely hits and Kyle Gibson had an effective outing in this 8-2 win over the Rockies.

What It Means:  Every time the Phillies win, I'm tempted to say something like, "This is the start of a long winning streak."  I hope I'm right this time.

What Happened:  With the Rockies holding a 2-0 lead, J.T. Realmuto doubled home Rhys Hoskins in the third to get the Phillies on the board.  They'd take the lead a batter later when Kyle Schwarber hit a fly ball to center that inexplicably dropped right in between two Rockies outfielders for a two-run double.  The Phillies would add on from there with a solo home run from regular DH Bryce Harper in the fifth, followed by a Harper sacrifice fly in the seventh.  A wild pitch and a Rockies error plated two more runs in the seventh to give the Phillies an 8-2 lead.

Gibson pitched into the sixth inning, allowing a pair of runs on three hits (including two home runs) while striking out four.  A quartet of Phillies relievers kept the Rockies from scoring after Gibson departed.

Featured Card:  I've been making my way through the retail Topps Phillies team set, and here's Hoskins' card.  Hoskins went 3 for 5, scoring twice in this game.

Field Report:  We weren't there, but my sister and her family were!  My nieces were lucky enough to appear on Phanavision during the game!

Transaction:  In need of regular at-bats, Bryson Stott (3b) was optioned to Lehigh Valley and Roman Quinn (of) had his contract selected.  Quinn had spent spring training with the Marlins and was released in early April.  The Phillies signed him to a minor league contract on April 9th, and it's good to see him back with the team.  To make room for Quinn on the 40-man roster, Ryan Sherriff (lhp) was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Game 16 - Phils Shut Out by Brewers, Home Plate Ump

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies came out on the wrong end of this pitcher's duel as the Brewers squeaked by with a 1-0 win.

What It Means:  The Phillies won their opening series against the Athletics, and they've lost the next four series to follow.  They'll try to right the ship with a four-game set against the Rockies beginning tonight.

What Happened:  Aaron Nola and Brewers' starter Eric Lauer both pitched well in this game, and both were beneficiaries of a confusing an inconsistent strike zone by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez.  Lauer struck out 13 over six innings and Nola countered with nine strikeouts over seven innings.  The game was scoreless until the top of the ninth, when a bloop single from Jace Peterson dropped in between center fielder Odubel Herrera and shortstop Johan Camargo.  Peterson would ultimately score on a Christian Yelich sacrifice fly.  In the bottom of the ninth, Kyle Schwarber had seen enough and was ejected by Hernandez after a particularly bad third strike call.  Schwarber got his money's worth, and was justified in his frustration, but the Phillies were retired to end the game.

Featured Card:  This was Nola's fourth start of the year and by far his best.  He allowed just one hit and a walk in this outing and unfortunately the Phillies offense couldn't push across any runs against Lauer and three Brewers relievers.  This card is from the retail Topps Phillies team set, and is most likely a preview of what Nola's flagship card will look like when 2022 Topps Series Two releases in a few months.

One Sentence Summary:  Brewers' pitching held the Phillies' bats in check in this 5-3 loss.

What It Means:  The rubber match is tonight, and it's the Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN.

What Happened:  At least Zack Wheeler's stuff seemed to have returned, although last year's Cy Young Award candidate allowed four runs on seven hits over his five innings of work.  Cristopher Sanchez gave up the fifth Brewers run on a solo home run to Hunter Renfroe in the sixth.

The Phillies offense kind of shut it down after the third.  The Phillies scored first following back-to-back doubles from Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos in the first inning.  They took a 3-0 lead in the third when Jean Segura singled home Odubel Herrera, and Castellanos added a sacrifice fly.

Featured Card:  This is probably the last Phillies baseball card to be issued for current Brewer Andrew McCutchen while he's still an active player, and it's one of the 17 cards in the Topps Phillies team set available for sale at the ballpark.  I'm happy to see the return of these sets, as covered in my last game summary post.  This is a fitting card for this post as the team's cream-colored alternate uniforms, worn during home day games, finally arrived in time for yesterday's game.  There had been a delay in the uniforms being shipped, so the Phillies had been wearing their red pinstripes during home day games.  The baby blue throwback alternates, worn on home Thursday games, have also arrived after a similar delay.

Game 14 - Phils' Bats Awaken Just in Time

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies used a late-inning rally, capped by a two-run single from Alec Bohm, to win this series opener 4-2.

What It Means:  All is not lost.

What Happened:  Andrew McCutchen, leading off for the Brewers in the top of the first, returned to Philadelphia for the first time and received a respectful round of applause from the early crowd.  Bryce Harper started the scoring when he doubled home Jean Segura in the bottom of the first.  The score remained 1-1 until McCutchen hit a seventh inning sacrifice fly to break the tie.  In the bottom of the eighth, the Phillies successfully moved the line.  Harper, Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto all singled while down in the count with two strikes.  Bohm, also down 2-2, laced a single to right to score Harper and Castellanos and to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.  Johan Camargo followed with another single to right to score Realmuto.

Ranger Suarez didn't have his best stuff, but he kept the Phillies in the game for 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits.  Nick Nelson secured the win with a scoreless eighth and Corey Knebel notched his third save.

Featured Card:  For 15 years between 2006 and 2020, Topps produced team sets available for sale in blister packs at retail locations or ballparks.  Known as Topps Retail, Topps Team Sets or what I've come to call Topps Phillies sets, these sets disappeared last year and we were pleased to see them return to the ballpark last night.  Player selection is questionable, as the Phillies team set includes the long-departed McCutchen, Ian Kennedy and Archie Bradley, but after a one-year absence in 2021, Doug and I were happy to see these back in the ballpark stores.

Field Report:  And we were there!  We enjoyed (?) this game from the Diamond Club, with not a lot of reasons to cheer until the eighth inning rally.  Before the game, while Doug stationed himself at the top right of the Phillies' dugout to seek autographs, Jenna, Ben and I headed to Pass and Stow for dinner.  Third base coach Dusty Wathan signed a team ball while Rhys Hoskins graciously signed yet another baseball card for Doug.  Following the successful autograph session, Doug devoured his new ballpark favorite - the burnt tips steak sandwich platter, with coleslaw and cornbread from Bull's BBQ.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, Odubel Herrera (of) was activated from the injured list and Simon Muzziotti (of) was optioned to Double-A Reading.  Muzziottti was 1 for 7 in nine games in his first big league stint.

Game 13 - Four Dingers Fuel Denver Win

Game 13 - Wednesday Afternoon, April 20th in Denver
Record - 5-8, Tied for 4th Place, 4 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies secured a much-needed win thanks largely to four home runs, as they escaped from Denver following a 9-6 victory.

What It Means:  After an off day on Thursday, the Phillies will open a seven-game homestead against the Brewers and Rockies, beginning Friday night.  They were a disappointing 2-5 on the road trip to Miami and Denver.

What Happened:  In yet another version of the batting order, the six, seven and eight batters - Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm and Joan Camargo - combined to go 7 for 12 with five runs scored and eight RBIs.  The Phillies took a brief 3-2 lead in the fourth following home runs from Nick Castellanos and Bohm.  The Rockies took the lead in the fifth, but Schwarber tied the game again in the sixth with an absolute moonshot of a home run that reached the first row of the Coors Field third deck.  The offense put the game out of reach in the seventh.  Schwarber was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Bohm hit a sacrifice fly and Camargo launched a three-run home run to left.

Zach Eflin started and earned a no decision with 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing four runs on nine hits.  Jose Alvarado and Corey Knebel supplied the final two scoreless innings of relief, with Knebel notching his second save.

Featured Card:  Camargo, the team's back-up utility infielder, went 4 for 5 in this game, raising his season average to .382.  We'll most likely need to wait for the Topps Update or Topps Heritage High Numbers releases for a mainstream Phillies baseball card for Camargo, and for now here's his first Topps flagship appearance from the 2017 Topps Update set.

Happy Birthday Ben!

This kid.

This kid doesn't stop.  His imagination is unparalleled and the wheels of his brain are constantly turning with new ideas, new projects, things he wants to do and places he wants to visit.  He's become a wonderful piano player, a skilled tennis player and a determined runner.  This kid is funny, kind, happy, thoughtful, considerate and exhausting.

I couldn't be prouder of this kid, and he happens to turn 12 today.  Happy birthday Ben!

One Sentence Summary:  A clutch two-run home run from Kyle Schwarber and 11 Phillies hits weren't enough, as Jeurys Familia allowed a three-run home run to C.J. Cron in the seventh to send the Rockies to victory.

What It Means:  As pointed out in a Matt Gelb Tweet, the Phillies have already matched their season-low from 2021 as they're now four games under .500.  The last time they were at least five games under .500 was August 22, 2020.

What Happened:  The Phillies came back to take the lead in the sixth inning on Schwarber's second home run of the season.  They had held an early 2-0 lead following RBI singles from Bryce Harper in the first and Matt Vierling in the fourth.  Hitting into four double plays hampered much of the Phillies production throughout the night.

Kyle Gibson scattered six hits over his six innings of work, allowing three runs and departing with the Phillies holding a slim 4-3 lead.  In the bottom of the seventh, Seranthony Dominguez recorded the first two outs of the inning and appeared to have struck out Charlie Blackmon to end the inning.  The close pitch was called a ball and the inning unfortunately progressed.  Blackmon walked, Kris Bryant reached on an infield single, Familia replaced Dominguez, and Cron hit his three-run home run to give the Rockies a 6-4 lead.

Featured Card:  Familia recorded the first blown save for the Phillies this season, and I wish I could say that was a shocking event.  I've watched Familia record his fair share of saves for the Mets over the years, but I've also watched him cough up his fair share of leads.  It was enjoyable then, but it's painful now that he's wearing a Phillies hat.
