Pirates 7, Phillies 4
Game 99 - Saturday Afternoon, July 23rd in Pittsburgh
Record - 45-54, 4th place, 13 1/2 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: Aaron Nola's struggles continued and the Phillies left 14 runners on base as the Pirates won, 7-4
What It Means: For the fifth time in seven starts, Nola failed to make it out of the fifth inning. His undoing was the bottom of the fifth when the Pirates batted around and scored five times.
What Happened: The Phillies had 12 hits in this game and stole five bases, but went 5 for 17 with runners in scoring position. Cesar Hernandez had two RBI singles.
Featured Card: In putting together the series preview post a few days ago, I was somewhat surprised to see that Hernandez had surpassed Odubel Herrera for the team lead in batting average. (Herrera has since taken the lead back.) Hernandez isn't the long-term answer at second base for the Phillies, but he's filled in nicely during these "transition" years.
