1996 Donruss #264 Mike Mimbs

Tigers 10, Phillies 0
Game 104 - Saturday Night, July 27th in Detroit
Record - 49-55, 3rd Place, 10 games behind the Braves

Another Massive, Post-Vacation, Why Do I Even Bother Catch-Up, Part 1 of 8

One Sentence Summary:  Until the deflating and embarrassing loss of the next day, this marked the low-point of the season as the Phillies were easily defeated, 10-0.

What It Means:  I don't want to dwell too much on these games, but solely for the sake of having a complete record of the 2013 season on this blog, I'll soldier on.  I don't like to stop in the middle of something I've started.

What Went Wrong:  Making a spot start in place of Cliff Lee (out with a stiff neck), long-man Raul Valdes got completely destroyed by the Tigers' potent offense. His final line - 3 2/3 innings, 9 runs on 12 hits and an ERA of 9.72.  The offense managed two hits off All-Star starting pitcher Max Scherzer and two relievers.

Featured Card:  As much as I could have easily continued with the Rick Schu cards, I decided to move things along and go back to cards of players somehow connected to the game in question.  With his horrendous outing, Valdes joined two Phillies pitchers in the franchise's history to allow 12 or more hits and nine or more runs in less than four innings - Mike Mimbs in 1996 and Jimmy Ring in 1922.

1996 Donruss cards really don't scan well, do they?

I took a glance at this featured card and thought it was a jersey relic. I should've realized that there wouldn't be a black swatch from a Phillies uniform, but what can I say? I'm not awake yet.

And I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be a relic card for Michael Mimbs either . . .

(No offense to Mr. Mimbs if he stumbles across this post.)

I'm surprised Jimmy Rollins didn't give himself the nickname "Jimmy Ring" in the winter of 2008-09.
