Game 89 - Sunday Afternoon, July 7th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-46, 3rd Place, 7 1/2 games behind the Braves
One Sentence Summary: All-Star Domonic Brown hit a two-run home run as the Phillies defeated the Braves on a sweltering afternoon, 7-3.
What It Means: It means the Phils won the series over the first place Braves, drawing one game closer to first than they were when the weekend started. They'll open a four-game series with the Nationals at home tonight and the outcome of this series will likely dictate whether or not the team will trade away available veterans before the upcoming non-waiver trade deadline.
What Went Right: It was nice to watch a game where the Phils were in control from the start. Brown tripled in the first to score the first run of the game and he added his home run to right (his 23rd) in the fifth. Ben Revere contributed a two-run triple in the fourth.
Jonathan Pettibone lasted only 5 1/3 innings, but he earned his fifth win. Antonio Bastardo and Jonathan Papelbon pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings to lock down the victory.
Featured Card: I featured a bunch of Brown's 2011 baseball cards during that season's game recaps, but not the card featured here. The Finest brand has probably worn out its welcome, but this particular shiny card works well to showcase the then-prospect Brown as he's looking towards the future and perhaps dreaming of his first All-Star Game appearance. The picture was most likely taken from the same photo shoot in Clearwater featured on the card shown in 2011 - Part 1, linked below.
Wait . . . it may even be the same picture. Topps wouldn't do that, would they? (That there is sarcasm, folks.)
