1987 Fleer Update #U-17 Steve Carlton

Indians 6, Phillies 0
Game 28 - Wednesday Night, May 1st in Cleveland
Record - 12-16, Tied for 3rd Place, 5 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies looked awful (and slightly bored) in a brutal 6-0 shutout loss to the Indians.

What It Means:  It means the Phillies were embarrassed by the Indians in their two-game series, getting outscored by a cumulative score of 20-2.  It's amazing because as of Sunday night, coming off a three-game sweep of the Mets, I felt terrific about the Phillies.  In three short days, that warm and fuzzy feeling was completely blown up.

What Went Wrong:  It would be easiest to just say that nothing went right.  The offense drew seven walks, and managed three hits.  Nobody scored.

Cliff Lee gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits in six innings.

Featured Card:  I'm phoning it in with this one.  There was an interesting post over at Phungo yesterday statistically comparing 2013 Roy Halladay to 1986 Steve Carlton.  Remembering that Carlton played very briefly with the Indians during his 1986-1987 farewell tour, I dug out this card of Lefty wearing the unfamiliar Tribe garb.

At least Phillies fans got to enjoy 13+ great years of Carlton. We only got to really enjoy Doc for 2+ years.

Hopefully we get Doc for a little while longer. In Yocum we trust.
