Phillies 5, Marlins 4 (10 Innings)Game 108 - Thursday Night, August 5th in Miami
I watched this game at the shore with a tummy ache resulting from: too much seafood, too much salt-water taffy, and too much ice cream. It was worth it.
The Phillies had no business winning this ballgame, playing fairly crappy baseball for 8 innings. Fortunately, the Marlins played crappier baseball and the Phils walked away with an extra-inning win, sweeping the series in Miami. A controversial umpire's call in the 9th also helped things go the Phillies' way.
Roy Oswalt labored through the 2nd and 3rd innings before settling down and finding his groove against the Marlins - at one point retiring 10 straight until the bottom of the 7th. And then the bottom fell out. The Marlins plated 4 runs in the 7th, scoring easily off relievers J.C. Romero and Jose Contreras. (Romero allowed both his inherited runners to score.)
Back in the 6th, the Phils scored first when Carlos Ruiz doubled home Raul Ibañez and Domonic Brown. They tied it up in the 9th when Ibañez doubled home Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth singled home Ross Gload one batter later. They should have scored more, but they managed to run their way out of the inning by recording all 3 outs on the base paths. They also dodged a bullet in the bottom of the 9th when the 3rd base umpire ruled a scorching grounder from Gaby Sanchez was just foul. Had the ball been ruled fair (replays were inconclusive, in my humble opinion), the Marlins most likely would have walked off with the win.

But the ball was ruled fair, which allowed Ruiz to hit a line drive home run to left giving the Phils a 5-4 lead in the 10th. Brad Lidge came on in the bottom of the 10th to record his 12th save of the year. It was the Phillies' 7th straight extra-inning win and it kept them 2 games behind the NL East leading Braves.
