1982 Topps Appreciation:  I featured Dick Ruthven's 1982 Topps card earlier this week along with Gene Garber's card as the two pitchers had once been traded for each other.  Jim Kaat is also in the club of pitchers included in trades for Ruthven, as Kaat was acquired from the White Sox (with Mike Buskey) by the Phillies for Ruthven, Alan Bannister and Roy Thomas on December 10, 1975.

Pitcher Ron Reed spent half a season with the Cardinals in 1975 before the Phillies acquired him to bolster their 1976 bullpen.  Kaat and Reed were teammates on the Phillies during a successful period for the team between 1976 and 1979.

By 1982, Kaat was playing in the last full season of his 25-year career, appearing in 62 games for the Cardinals with an impressive 4.08 ERA.  Reed continued to provide steady relief for the Phillies in 1982, appearing in 57 games and recording 14 saves.

One Sentence Summary:  The May version of the Phillies returned as the Braves rolled to a 14-1 victory.

What It Means:  The modest four-game winning streak is over.

What Happened:  Jerad Eickhoff cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth, made worse by a Maikel Franco error. Eickhoff allowed a three-run home run to Dansby Swanson and it was all downhill from there.  Relievers Adam Morgan and Luis Garcia combined to allow nine earned runs in their two innings pitched.

Featured Card:  With the Braves up 12-0 in the eighth and manager Pete Mackanin unwilling to sacrifice any additional bullpen arms, super utility-man Andres Blanco was called to the mound. Blanco allowed a two-run home run to Matt Adams before getting Tyler Flowers to pop up to end the inning.

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola pitched eight great innings as the Phillies won their fourth in a row, 3-1.

What It Means:  In Nola's best pitching performance by far this season, he allowed a run on five hits while striking out six.

What Happened:  All the offense Nola needed was provided by a solo home run from Howie Kendrick (2) in the fourth and an RBI-double from Odubel Herrera in the sixth.  A third insurance run scored in the sixth on a Jaime Garcia balk.  Hector Neris allowed two hits to start the ninth and was replaced by Pat Neshek.  Neshek recorded the final two outs of the game and his first save of the season.

Featured Card:  There haven't been many opportunities this season to showcase a Nola card, so I'm pleased to feature a card of his here.  This card was available in "silver packs" available as an incentive for buying 2017 Topps Series One boxes from hobby shops.

One Sentence Summary:  Odubel Herrera remained red hot, doubling twice and hitting a home run in this 11-4 win over the Braves.

What It Means:  The Phillies have suddenly won three in a row and they'll go for their fourth in a row tonight against the Braves.

What Happened:  The offense jumped all over Bartolo Colon, chasing the veteran pitcher after he had allowed eight runs in 3 2/3 innings.  Nick Pivetta threw five solid innings, earning his first big league win.  Tommy Joseph and Aaron Altherr contributed to the hit parade with three hits a piece, including a two-run home run (10) from Joseph in the first and a two-run home run from Altherr (9) in the eighth.

Featured Card:  Herrera became the first Phillies player since at least 1913 to hit at least two doubles in three straight games.  In the first three games of June, he's hitting .615 (8 for 13) with six doubles and two home runs.  This is his card from Topps Bunt Infinite, an insert set found randomly inserted into packs of the Topps Bunt (physical) cards.

I'm confused by this card.  Why call these cards Infinite?  And is that a ghostly Citizens Bank Park beneath the giant semi-transparent Odubel head?

Transaction:  To make room for Pivetta on the roster, Brock Stassi was optioned to Double-A Reading.  Given the glut of prospects vying for playing time with the IronPigs, a trip to Reading will guarantee Stassi more at-bats.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  When the Phillies and Braves faced off back in April, I featured two players (Bob Walk and Gary Matthews) who had been traded for one another.  We have another pair of players traded for one another for this series preview post.

On June 15, 1978, the Phillies and Braves swapped pitchers with Dick Ruthven coming to Philadelphia and Gene Garber heading to Atlanta.  I first wrote about this deal in a series preview post in 2012, featuring both pitchers' 1979 Topps cards.

Garber was purchased from the Royals back in July 1974 and for parts of five seasons, he was one of the Phillies most reliable relief pitchers.  He appeared in 250 games with the Phils, including a league leading 71 in 1975, compiling a 33-22 record with 51 saves and a 2.68 ERA.  Garber's career spanned 19 seasons and he eventually retired following his release by the Royals in July 1988. 

Ruthven was drafted by the Phillies in January 1973, and he appeared in his first game with the big club in April 1973.  After struggling in 1975, the Phils shipped him to the White Sox in the deal that netted Jim Kaat.  His second stint with the Phillies was much more successful, as his 17-10 record in 1980 helped the team to their first World Series ring.  In May 1983, Ruthven was dealt to the Cubs for Willie Hernandez.  He pitched with the Cubs until his release in May 1986.

Game 54 - Sunday Afternoon, June 4th in Philadelphia
Record - 19-35, 5th place, 15 1/2 games ahead of the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The offense, led by Odubel Herrera and Freddy Galvis, erupted for nine runs as the Phillies won their first series since April.

What It Means:  This is the first three-game series win for the club since they swept the Braves April 21st through 23rd.  The Phils now head to Atlanta for a four-game series.

What Happened:  Herrera had two doubles and a fifth inning solo home run, knocking in three total runs.  Galvis homered from both sides of the plate (5 and 6) becoming the first player since Jimmy Rollins on July 20, 2011 to accomplish that feat.  Maikel Franco homered (7), his first since May 18th, to give the Phils the lead for good in the eighth.

Pat Neshek pitched a scoreless inning to notch the win, lowering his ERA to 0.84 in the process. Hector Neris recorded his fifth save.

One Sentence Summary:  Ben Lively was extremely impressive in his big league debut and a big three-run triple from Odubel Herrera (with accompanying bat flip) led the Phillies to a rare win.

What It Means:  This was the first Phillies win since the prior Saturday, a game we also attended.

What Happened:  Lively allowed a run on four hits over seven innings with nary a strikeout. Tommy Joseph tied the game at one with a solo home run (9) in the sixth.  Herrera came up with the bases loaded in the seventh against Hunter Strickland and cleared them off with a double to center.

Hector Neris made it interesting in the ninth allowing two Giants runs, but Jeanmar Gomez closed it out with one pitch by inducing a game-ending force out.

Featured Card:  Lively's regular issue Chachi card features a still shot of him, so I thought it appropriate to give him an In Action card to celebrate his debut.

Field Report:  Jenna and I enjoyed the first few innings of this game from Harry the K's, and then we made our way to Section 116 to watch the tail-end of Lively's outing along with the eventual post-game Gatorade bath he received.

After the game, we enjoyed a fantastic performance from The Avett Brothers, andthe setlist for the mini-concert is below.  It was the first time we had seen the band live, and I wouldn't mind catching another of their shows whenever they're back in town.

Transactions:  The Phillies optioned Mark Leiter, Jr. to the IronPigs to make room for Lively on the roster.  Joaquin Benoit was placed on the disabled list with a left knee sprain and Adam Morgan was brought up from Lehigh Valley (again) to take his place.

Phillies Debuts:  Lively became the 13th player to make his Phillies debut in 2017 and the 6th to make his major league debut.

Autographed Phillies Missing Links Cards (and the Phillies Still Stink)

One Sentence Summary:  Giants pitcher Ty Blach threw his first career complete game shutout as the Giants easily dismantled the Phillies, 10-0.

What It Means:  At some point, some changes need to be made to the Phillies roster.  Right?  I mean, they just can't keep running out the same guys night after night when they're getting absolutely destroyed.  These games aren't even remotely competitive at this point.

What Happened:  Jerad Eickhoff walked a career high five batters in his 2 2/3 innings before getting pulled.  The offense managed seven singles and had one runner in scoring position all night.

Featured Cards:  Turning away from the dreadful 2017 Phillies momentarily, reader and fellow collector Bill recently reached out to me about my Phillies Missing Links custom cards.  He was specifically interested in the original picture I used for the Bob Sebra card, as Sebra himself had requested a copy of it via e-mail.  I sent Bill the scan I used for the Sebra card (from the 1989 Phillies Yearbook) and in return Bill sent me the autographed cards seen here.

Bill is using some of the Phillies Missing Links cards to track down autographs of players who have never appeared on an official Phillies baseball card, and he was kind enough to send these duplicates to me for my collection.  Good luck with the chase Bill and thanks again for sending these autographs!

Transaction:  Outfielder Daniel Nava was activated from the disabled list prior to the game and reliever Ricardo Pinto was sent back down to the IronPigs.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  On December 14, 1982, the Phillies traded Mike Krukow, Mark Davis and minor leaguer C.L. Penigar to the Giants for Al Holland and Joe Morgan.  Holland and Morgan would make contributions to the 1983 Phillies team that won the N.L. pennant, while Davis would go on to win a Cy Young Award with the Padres in 1989.

Holland was the key to the deal for the Phillies.  Inserted into the closer's role in 1983, he solidified the back-end of the bullpen that had been in flux since Tug McGraw's success a few years' prior.  Mr. T saved 25 games in 1983 and had a fantastic ERA of 2.26.  He struck out Bill Russell to clinch the 1983 N.L. pennant and jumped into Mike Schmidt's arms to start the on-field celebration.

Davis is featured on the card I most coveted during the summer of 1982, as Bob Dernier had emerged as my favorite baseball player.  I have yet to tell the story on this blog of how I ended up playing catch with Dernier before a Phillies game, and it's a story I'll need to share at some point.
