2025 Chachi #22 Orion Kerkering

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'2"  Weight:  210
Opening Day 2025 Age:  23
Born:  April 4, 2001, Huntington Beach, CA
Acquired:  Drafted by the Phillies in the 5th round of the 2022 amateur draft, July 18, 2022
Contract Status:  Signed through 2030
Major League Teams:  Philadelphia Phillies 2023-25
Postseason Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2023-25

2025 Philadelphia Phillies Photocards
Orion Kerkerking's 2025 season will likely, and unfairly, be remembered for the season-ending, 11th inning error he made in Game 4 of the NLDS, sending the Dodgers to the NLCS and the Phillies to another disappointing finish to their otherwise successful year.  Kerkerking struggled at times throughout the regular season, only his second full year in the majors, and was 8-4 with a 3.30 ERA in 69 appearances and 60 innings pitched.  He'll be back to bolster the back end of the bullpen in 2026.  Topps somehow ignored him throughout all 2025 baseball card releases, and his ballpark exclusive Kids Club card eluded me completely as the Kids Club kiosk ran out of the card before I had added it to my collection.

2025 Chachi #21 Carlos Hernandez

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'4"  Weight:  255
Opening Day 2025 Age:  28
Born:  March 11, 1997, Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela
Acquired:  Selected off waivers from the Kansas City Royals, March 23, 2025
Departed:  Selected off waivers by the Detroit Tigers, June 16, 2025
Major League Teams:  Kansas City Royals 2020-24; Philadelphia Phillies 2025; Detroit Tigers 2025; Cleveland Guardians 2025

A surprising addition to the opening day roster, Carlos Hernandez was claimed off waivers on the penultimate day of spring training games and he joined the club in time for their first game of the season in Washington.  Tyler Phillips was the odd man out when a roster spot for Hernandez was needed, and in hindsight, the Phillies would have been better off sticking with Phillips.  Hernandez appeared in 25 games for the Phillies, and was 1-0 with a 5.26 ERA in 25 2/3 innings pitched.  The Phillies cut ties with the pitcher in mid-June and he pitched in 11 games for the Tigers and five games with the Guardians to close out the year.

2025 Chachi #20 Tanner Banks

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Left  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  205
Opening Day 2025 Age:  33
Born:  October 24, 1991, Riverton, UT
Acquired:  Traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Phillies for William Bergolla, July 30, 2024
Contract Status:  Signed through 2029
Major League Teams:  Chicago White Sox 2022-24; Philadelphia Phillies 2024-25
Postseason Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2024-25

Only Matt Strahm with a 2.0 bWAR had a higher mark among Phillies relievers than Tanner Banks, who finished the year with a 1.7 bWAR.  Banks was consistently and quietly reliable throughout the season, appearing in a team-leading 69 games and earning a 6-2 record with a 3.07 ERA in 67 1/3 innings pitched.  Despite his success with the Phillies the last two seasons, he has yet to appear on a mainstream baseball card with the club, and the card shown here, from the somewhat rare 2025 team-issued photo card set, is his lone Phillies cardboard representation to date.

Born:  May 21, 1995, Maracaibo, Venezuela
Acquired:  Traded as part of a 3-team deal by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Phillies, December 29, 2020.  The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Dillon Paulson and a player to be named later to the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Phillies sent Garrett Cleavinger to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It was a lost season for Jose Alvarado.  Expected to be a force at the back-end of the bullpen, and nearly unhittable at the start of the season, Alvarado was suspended on May 18th for 80 games after testing positive for a PED.  He had likely been heading to the All-Star Game, and instead he missed the bulk of the summer and was ineligible for the postseason.  He returned on August 19th, but wasn't nearly as effective, and the Phillies shut him down for the season on September 12th with a left forearm strain.  In 28 games, Alvarado was 4-2 with 3.81 ERA and seven saves.  His club option was picked up on November 5th, and he'll return for at least one more season in 2026.

Taijuan Walker had a bounce back season in 2025, pitching relatively well in whatever role the team needed.  Overall, he was 5-8 with a 4.08 ERA in 34 appearances, including 21 starts.  He seemingly never complained about his lack of a defined role, taking the ball whenever called upon and earning his way onto the postseason roster.  He'll be back in 2026, the final year of his four-year deal, as either the fifth starter, long man or key middle reliever.

Suddenly one of the elite pitchers in the National League, Cristopher Sanchez had a Cy Young worthy season if not for the Pirates' Paul Skenes.  Sanchez was 13-5 in 32 starts with a 2.50 ERA in 202 innings pitched.  He struck out 212 batters and his 8.0 bWAR was tops in the National League.  He made two starts in the doomed NLDS against the Dodgers, pitching to a 2.25 ERA over 12 innings, striking out 13.  With Zack Wheeler's status uncertain for the start of the 2026 season, I'm looking for Sanchez to get the nod to start on opening day.

By all accounts, Aaron Nola had an absolutely atrocious season, going 5-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts and 94 1/3 innings pitched.  He was shut down from mid-May to mid-August with what was deemed a right ankle strain, and his post-injury numbers were slightly better than his pre-injury numbers.  Nola was the surprise starter in Game 3 of the NLDS, pitching two scoreless innings against the Dodgers.

Jesus Luzardo was in the running for the ace of the staff early in the season until a disastrous 12-runs allowed outing against the Brewers in late May where it was suspected the lefty was tipping his pitches.  He'd figure it out somewhat, struggling throughout the summer, but then turning it around down the stretch drive in August and September.  For the season, Luzardo was 15-7 with a 3.92 ERA in 32 starts and 183 2/3 innings pitched.  Only Cristopher Sanchez made that many starts and exceeded Luzardo's innings pitched on the Phillies' pitching staff, while Luzardo's 216 strikeouts led the team.

Johan Rojas made the team's opening day roster as a back-up outfielder, but his offensive struggles resulting in the Phillies ultimately acquiring Harrison Bader at the July trade deadline.  Rojas was optioned to Lehigh Valley to make room on the roster for Bader, and he'd spend the rest of the summer with the IronPigs.  He suffered a left quad injury in late September, ending his season.  With the Phillies, Rojas appeared in 71 games, batting .224 with a home run and 18 RBIs.  He made 46 starts in center field, seeing regular playing time throughout April, until entering into a platoon with Brandon Marsh in May.

Rafael Marchan beat out Garrett Stubbs for the back-up catcher role in 2025, and he'd play in a career-high 42 games while batting .210 with four doubles, a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs.  Marchan made 30 starts behind the plate, giving J.T. Realmuto an occasional day off.  I've been guilty of complaining about Topps' lack of quality control over the years, and admittedly until posting this card, I had no idea I had used the same exact photo on Marchan's 2024 Chachi card.  I'm not sure how that happened, but I guess I really liked the photo, and I'll be slightly more lenient towards Topps going forward.
