Game 109 - Flyin' Hawaiian Returns, Retires as a Phillie
Phillies 5, Marlins 1
Game 109 - Friday Night, August 3rd in Philadelphia
Record - 61-48, 1st place, 1/2 game ahead of the Braves
One Sentence Summary: Vince Velasquez was impressive again and Roman Quinn added some insurance with a 2-run, 8th inning double as the Phillies downed the Marlins, 5-1.
What It Means: The Braves beat Jacob deGrom and the Mets, so the slim half game lead in the division remains.
What Happened: Velasquez was pulled after 6 1/3 innings and only 85 pitches, presumably to preserve his arm for the stretch run. He allowed two hits while striking out 7. Pat Neshek allowed the sole Marlins run, and it was his first run allowed while pitching at home since he joined the Phillies.
The scoring started when Velasquez doubled in the 3rd and Rhys Hoskins singled him home.
Featured Card: There was a pre-game ceremony to honor Shane Victorino and for the popular outfielder to officially retire as a Phillie. Victorino gave an emotional speech and then threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his former teammate, Ryan Howard. It was great to watch the game last night and see some of the names and faces from that amazing 2008 championship team pop up throughout the broadcast.
