Cardinals 3, Phillies 2
Game 59 - Friday Night, June 9th in St. Louis
Record - 21-38, 5th place, 16 1/2 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: Despite another good game at the plate from Aaron Altherr, the Phillies dropped the series opener to the Cardinals, 3-2.
What It Means: The Cardinals were in the midst of a seven-game losing streak before the Phillies came to town.
What Happened: Altherr doubled twice and had an RBI triple. Jeremy Hellickson allowed three runs on 10 hits in his six innings of work.
Featured Card: Odubel Herrera went 1-for-4 with a single, ending his streak of six straight games with a double. He tied the franchise record also held by Bobby Abreu (2000) and Heinie Sand (1925). Abreu has had his cards featured 33 times throughout the history of this blog, so I'll give Sand his due. This is the sole card of Sand in my collection, from the 1992 Conlon set, and I believe its also his sole Phillies card.
Phillies Debuts: Casey Fien relieved Hellickson in the seventh inning, making his Phillies debut. Fien had appeared in six games with the Mariners earlier this season.
14. Casey Fien (rhp) - Fien became the first player to wear #54 since Brad Lidge departed following the 2011 season. He pitched two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one.
