Mariners 10, Phillies 9
Game 31 - Tuesday Night, May 9th in Philadelphia
Record - 13-18, 3rd place, 7 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: Phillies pitching faltered again and a strong offensive night was ruined as the Mariners won, 10-9.
What It Means: This was the shortest outing of Jerad Eickhoff's career as he went just 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. The bullpen combined to allow five runs (three earned), with Hector Neris unable to keep the game tied in the 9th.
What Happened: Michael Saunders (3), Tommy Joseph (3), and Aaron Altherr (5) all homered for the Phillies. Ben Gamel had a huge game for the Mariners, going 4 for 5 with four RBIs.
Featured Card: Carlos Ruiz returned to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since being traded to the Dodgers last season. He received a nice standing ovation in the eighth inning when he came to the plate to pinch-hit. (He flew out to center.) Along with Shane Victorino, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley, Chooch received a warm welcome upon his return to Philadelphia and I'm looking forward to one day attending his Wall of Fame ceremony.
Transaction: Prior to this game Jeanmar Gomez was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right elbow injury and Ty Kelly was recalled from Lehigh Valley.
