Nationals 3, Phillies 2
Game 143 - Sunday Afternoon, September 11th in Washington
Record - 63-80, 4th place, 22 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: Adam Morgan pitched well again, but Gio Gonzalez pitched better and the Nationals once again handled the Phillies, winning 3-2.
What It Means: Both Roman Quinn and Joely Rodriguez made their Major League debuts in this game.
What Happened: After walking lead-off batter Bryce Harper, Morgan was removed from the game in the seventh inning having thrown 87 pitches and with the score tied at one. Anthony Rendon promptly doubled off Morgan's replacement, Edubray Ramos, giving the Nationals a 2-1 lead.
The Phillies runs came on solo home runs from Tommy Joseph (18) and Freddy Galvis (17).
Featured Card: Quinn, wearing #24, batted second and started in center field for the Phillies. He went 0 for 3 with a walk in his big league debut. Rodriguez retired the only batter he faced in the bottom of the eighth.
Transaction: With the Reading Fightin Phils being eliminated from the postseason (one night after the IronPigs bowed out), the Phillies recalled outfielder Quinn and catcher Jorge Alfaro. I would think (maybe?) this represents the last round of additions to the Phillies roster for the 2016 season. The active roster now stands at 36, although with Vince Velasquez being shut down for the rest of the year that number is actually 35.
As discussed in this post, I'm taking a poll on how collectors track baseball card collections.
Please vote in the poll on the sidebar if you haven't already. Thanks!
