2015 Phillies Team Issue 2 #31 Jerome Williams

Phillies 5, Padres 3
Game 112 - Sunday Afternoon, August 9th in San Diego
Record - 45-67, 4th Place, 14 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Jerome Williams pitched his best game of the season, and the Phillies completed the sweep with a 5-3 win over the Padres.

What It Means:  The Phillies are a Major League best 16-5 since the All-Star break and they're now 19-19 under interim manager Pete Mackanin.  They'll open a three-game series against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix late tonight.

What Happened:  Ryan Howard started the scoring with an RBI double in the first.  Odubel Herrera added a solo home run in the sixth and Cesar Hernandez knocked in a run with a single in the seventh.  Pinch-hitter Chase Utley hit a huge two-out, two-run single in the eighth to give the Phillies a few much needed insurance runs.  He even flashed bull horns (a celebratory gesture originating from Herrera) and smiled a little when he reached second.

Featured Card:  After his last outing, I wondered if Williams would have a rotation spot in August.  He proved me wrong by scattering five hits over seven innings and allowing just one run.

Don't forget to vote in the poll (on the left sidebar) to help determine the design to be used for the 2016 Chachi set!  The poll will close soon . . . Topps unveiled its 2015 design last year on August 15th.
