Why We Missed the @ReadingFightins Game Last Night

2014 Bowman Draft
Top Prospects #TP-22
2015 Chachi
Special Edition #3
2014 Bowman Draft
Draft Picks #DP4
We'll get to the Phillies game recap in a moment, but first I wanted to share why we didn't go to the Reading Fightin Phils game last night.  My wife Jenna and I haven't been to a Reading game in over ten years and about a month ago, I went online to look for tickets for an upcoming game.  I bought four tickets to last night's game in Box 7, Row 9, right behind home plate.

Unbeknownst to us at the time I bought the tickets, our oldest son's Doug's soccer playoffs were also scheduled for yesterday beginning at 1:30.  We're both staunch supporters of Doug and everything he does, so naturally we weren't going to miss his soccer playoffs.  Realistically though, we imagined his team (which had gone 3-4 during the regular season) would bow out in the first round or at the very best, the second round.  We'd be on our way to Reading (a two hour drive for us) well in advance of the 6:35 first pitch.

To make a long (and hot) story short, Doug's team stunned pretty much everyone and made it all the way to the championship round, facing off against an undefeated team.  The third and final round began after 4:00, which meant the drive to Reading wouldn't be happening for us.  Even if we left right after Doug's game finished we wouldn't get there until at least the middle of the game.  Jenna and I made the decision to eat the tickets and not tell Doug until after his game that we wouldn't be heading to Reading.

Doug's team played their hearts out, but they didn't prevail in the championship game.  Naturally that led to a group of heart-broken eight and nine year olds, and Doug was even more upset because we'd miss last year's top draft pick Aaron Nola and the Double-A debut of top prospect J.P. Crawford.  Being the huge Phillies fan that he is, Doug was excited to see the future of the franchise in action and maybe even collect a few more autographs.

That's why we missed the Reading Fightins game last night . . . but we're already looking at the calendar to figure out when we can reschedule our trip.  And we'll be sure from now on not to discount any of Doug's teams in future playoffs!  I'm so unbelievably proud of him.

Kids still smiling here . . . this was taken after their second round victory.

Rockies 5, Phillies 2
Game 51 - Saturday Afternoon, May 30th in Philadelphia
Record - 19-32, 5th Place, 10 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies sleepwalked through another loss to the Rockies, dropping this game by a score of 5-2.

What It Means:  The loss matches the team's season high six-game losing streak.

What Happened:  Aaron Harang pitched well again (6 innings, 2 runs, 7 strikeouts) but the Phillies went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.

Featured Cards:  I wanted to show off the cards of three athletes with bright futures.  (I'm partial towards the middle one.)

2015 Bowman #46 Ben Revere

Rockies 4, Phillies 1
Game 50 - Friday Night, May 29th in Philadelphia
Record - 19-31, 5th Place, 10 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Chad Bettis silenced the Phillies bats, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Phillies easily folded to the Rockies, 4-1.

What It Means:  This game's only significance was the debut of opening day third baseman Cody Asche in left field.

What Happened:  Bettis lost his no-hit bid in the eighth when Asche singled up the middle.  Cole Hamels was the hard luck loser, as he allowed only two runs and struck out nine in his eight innings of work.

Featured Card:  In honor of my youngest son Ben, I had to go with a card for Ben Revere even though the right fielder went 0 for 4 last night.  (See Field Report below.)

Transaction:  Asche was recalled from Lehigh Valley prior to the game and veteran outfielder Grady Sizemore was designated for assignment.  Sizemore could end up reporting to Lehigh Valley.

Field Report:  We had tickets to last night's game and I decided it would be a great opportunity to take my five-year-old son Ben since the Phillies were giving away a Phanatic reading book to all kids.  Ben was excited about the game too . . . but only if his mother took him.

So like a true champ, my wife Jenna pinch-hit for me and I'm happy to report they had a wonderful time.  Ben cheered on his two favorite players (Revere, naturally, and Chase Utley) and spent the bulk of the game in the Phanatic Phun Zone.

Rockies 19-26, 5th Place in the N.L. West, 8 1/2 games behind the Dodgers
Phillies 19-30, 4th Place in the N.L. East, 10 games behind the Nationals

Rockies Probables:  Chad Bettis (1-0, 4.19), Jorge De La Rosa (1-2, 6.51), Jordan Lyles (2-5, 5.10)
Phillies Probables:  Cole Hamels (5-3, 2.98), Aaron Harang (4-4, 1.93), Jerome Williams (3-4, 5.33)

2005 Topps Total #109 Vicente Padilla

Mets 7, Phillies 0
Game 49 - Wednesday Afternoon, May 27th in Flushing
Record - 19-30

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies looked absolutely confused by the game of baseball in this lopsided 7-0 loss to the Mets.

What It Means:  The team just wrapped up a season-long stretch of 20 games without an off day and they'll celebrate by taking the day off today.  Surprisingly enough, the Phillies went 9-11 over the 20 game stretch which isn't all that bad.  The six-game winning streak, now a distant memory, certainly helped.

What Happened:  Mets starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard dominated the Phillies in this game, allowing just six hits in his 7 1/3 innings pitched.  He also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a long home run off Phillies starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan.

Featured Card:  Courtesy of the Philadelphia Inquirer's Matt Breen, O'Sullivan became the first Phillies pitcher to allow four home runs and at least seven earned runs since Vicente Padilla did it over ten years ago on April 19, 2005.  So he's got that going for him.

2015 Donruss #41 Maikel Franco

Mets 5, Phillies 4 (10 Innings)
Game 48 - Tuesday Night, May 26th in Flushing
Record - 19-29, 4th Place, 9 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies mounted an impressive and improbable late-inning comeback only to watch the Mets walk-off with a 5-4 extra inning win.

What It Means:  I honestly have no idea.  I don't understand the game and I don't understand the process.  I'm just going to bitch and moan because the Phillies don't have a plan.

What Happened:  Down 3-0, the offense plated four runs in the eighth to temporarily take the lead.  The big hits came courtesy of Ben Revere (two-run triple) along with Freddy Galvis and Maikel Franco who each drove in runs with singles.

Relievers Jeanmar Gomez and Elvis Araujo couldn't keep the Mets off the board in the 10th.

Featured Card:  Besides knocking in the Phillies fourth run of their big eighth inning, Franco made an incredible bare-handed play on a ball to end the bottom of the eighth and keep the game tied.  This is his logo-less Rated Rookies card found within the 2015 Donruss set.

1984 Donruss #448 Charlie Hudson

Mets 6, Phillies 3
Game 47 - Monday Afternoon, May 25th in Flushing
Record - 19-28

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies bullpen faltered yet again as the Phillies lost this Memorial Day matinee to the Mets, 6-3.

What It Means:  That six-game winning streak seems like a long time ago.

What Happened:  Phillies starting pitcher Severino Gonzalez was constantly in trouble in his 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing two home runs but departing with the score tied at three.  The crushing blow came in the sixth when Wilmer Flores hit a three run home run to left off reliever Justin De Fratus.  Chase Utley had two more hits in this game, including a two-run single in the third.

Featured Card:  Gonzalez struck out eight and didn't walk any Mets in his outing.  Fascinatingly enough, and courtesy of Bob Vetrone Jr. of Philly.com's BoopStats, the last Phillies starting pitcher to have at least eight strikeouts and no walks in a Phillies loss was Charles Hudson on May 31, 1983.

And now you know.

1985 Topps #68
1985 Topps #53
1985 Topps Appreciation:  We're approaching the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest offensive outbursts in Phillies history.  On June 11, 1985, the Phillies defeated the Mets by a score of 26-7 in a game in which Von Hayes hit two first inning home runs.

Tom Gorman started that game for the Mets and he faced seven batters before being relieved by Calvin Schiraldi.  His final line for the night - 1/3 of an inning, four hits, six earned runs and two walks.  Schiraldi and Joe Sambito took the brunt of the damage, each allowing ten runs to the Phillies.  I showed off the pages from my 1985 Phillies Scrapbook celebrating this game here.

Gorman was released by the Mets in April 1986 and signed with the Phillies.  He spent the bulk of the 1986 season pitching for the Phillies' Triple-A team in Portland, but he did earn a brief call-up in July appearing in eight games.

1934-1936 Batter-Up #38 Jimmie Wilson

Nationals 4, Phillies 1
Game 46 - Sunday Afternoon, May 24th in Washington
Record - 19-27, 4th Place, 8 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies hung in until the seventh when the bullpen combo of Justin De Fratus and Jake Diekman allowed the Nationals to take a 4-1 lead.

What It Means:  The Phillies will open a three-game series in New York against the Mets starting tomorrow afternoon.

What Happened:  The offense was 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.  Jeff Francoeur knocked in the Phillies only run of the game with a single in the fourth.  Aaron Harang turned in another quality start, allowing two runs in his six innings of work.

Featured Card:  There wasn't really anything memorable from this game from a Phillies perspective, so let's turn the clock back to 80 years ago tonight.  On May 24, 1935, the Reds hosted the Phillies at Crosley Field in the first ever Major League baseball night game.  The Reds defeated the Phillies by a score of 2-1 in a game that lasted just one hour and 35 minutes.

Jimmie Wilson was the Phillies player-manager for the historic event and he inserted himself into the game at some point to pinch-hit for Phillies starting pitcher Joe Bowman.  This is Wilson's card from the 1934-1936 Batter-Up set, which was released in National Chicle candy and gum products over a three year period.

According to the Standard Catalog, the 192 cards in the Batter Up set can be found in either black and white or a variety of color tints.  The cards were perforated to allow collectors to fold the tops of the cards back to allow them to stand on their own.  At some point over the last 80 years, one of this card's previous owners separated the top part of the card from the pink-tinted bottom.

2015 Topps #10 Cole Hamels

Phillies 8, Nationals 1
Game 45 - Saturday Afternoon, May 23rd in Washington
Record - 19-26, 4th Place, 7 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Bolstered by home runs from Maikel Franco and Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels easily took care of the Nationals in a 8-1 Phillies victory.

What It Means:  The Phils will go for the series win this afternoon.

What Happened:  Hamels was fantastic through eight innings, allowing a run on five hits.  Howard had another big day at the plate, going 3 for 5 and scoring twice.  Ben Revere had a pair of hits and scored three times.

Featured Card:  It's been fun watching Hamels increase his trade value over the past few months, and sadly I have a feeling this will be his final Phillies card in a Topps flagship set.  The real tragedy here is that we might not ever get a Phillies baseball card featuring Hamels' fantastic 2015 beard.

2011 Topps Update #US89 Sean O'Sullivan

Nationals 2, Phillies 1
Game 44 - Friday Night, May 22nd in Washington
Record - 18-26, 4th Place, 8 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  An unexpected pitcher's duel broke out between Max Scherzer and Sean O'Sullivan, but the Nationals were able to narrowly defeat the Phillies, 2-1.

What It Means:  At least the Phillies are playing competitive baseball at this point.  Admittedly, I didn't think they had a chance last night against Scherzer and the first place Nationals, but they hung in there.

What Happened:  O'Sullivan allowed both Nationals runs in his six innings of work and he's now pitched at least six innings while allowing two runs or less in three of his five starts.  Odubel Herrera doubled home Maikel Franco in the second for the Phillies only run.

Featured Card:  By my tally, there are three members of the 2015 Phillies team with no Phillies baseball cards to date - O'Sullivan, Dustin McGowan and Elvis Araujo.  I'd like to show some cardboard appreciation for O'Sullivan's surprisingly good outing, so here's his 2011 Topps Update card.

Maybe he'll earn a card in the giant-sized 2015 Topps Update set which will weigh in at 400 cards and be released this fall.

Phillies at Nationals: May 22nd to May 24th

Friday 7:05, Saturday 4:05 and Sunday 1:35

Phillies 18-25, 4th Place in the N.L. East, 7 games behind the Nationals
Nationals 24-17, 1st Place in the N.L. East, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

Phillies Probables:  Sean O'Sullivan (1-2, 3.68), Cole Hamels (4-3, 3.24), Aaron Harang (4-3, 1.82)
Nationals Probables:  Max Scherzer (4-3, 1.75), Stephen Strasburg (3-4, 5.98), Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 4.94)

At the Ballpark:  The first 10,000 fans will receive a 10th Anniversary poster on Sunday afternoon.  It's hard for me to believe there's been baseball back in Washington for 10 years now . . . and the Montreal Expos have been gone for 11 years.

Phillies Leaders
Average:  Freddy Galvis - .319
Runs:  Freddy Galvis - 18
Home Runs:  Ryan Howard - 9
RBIs:  Ryan Howard - 21
Stolen Bases:  Ben Revere - 9

Wins:  Cole Hamels and Aaron Harang - 4
ERA:  Aaron Harang - 1.82
Strikeouts:  Cole Hamels - 62
Saves:  Jonathan Papelbon - 11

1985 Topps #143
1985 Topps #134
1985 Topps Appreciation:  Father's Day is a month away, but I wanted to be able to fit in these two cards given the Expos/Phillies connection with the Tito and Terry Francona card.  Before the younger Francona managed the Phillies through four grueling seasons (1997-2000), the elder Francona already had a Phillies connection.

Tito played 15 years in the majors, squeezing in 27 games with the Phillies in 1967.  Tito was purchased from the Cardinals by the Phils on April 10, 1967 and then sold again (hopefully at a profit) to the Braves by the Phils on June 12, 1967.  His short stint earned him a late series Phillies baseball card in the 1967 Topps set.

The elder Ozzie Virgil had no Phillies connection that I could find during his playing days.  The younger Virgil was an All-Star with the Phillies in 1985 and spent parts of six seasons behind the plate in maroon pinstripes.

Top 10 Things that Went Through Cole Hamels' Mind After Winning the World Series

2009 Topps Heritage New
Age Performers #NAP11
Rockies 7, Phillies 3
Game 43 - Thursday Afternoon, May 21st in Denver
Record - 18-25, 4th Place, 7 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Phillies pitchers Jerome Williams and Elvis Araujo got knocked around and the Phillies couldn't mount a comeback as the Rockies won, 7-3.

What It Means:  Williams has struggled in May and after this game, his ERA for the month is an ugly 7.03.  He allowed five runs on eight hits in his five innings of work.  Araujo allowed two more runs in his two innings of work.

What Happened:  Ryan Howard hit his ninth home run of the year and Chase Utley had two more hits to raise his average to .169.  In his last 12 games, Utley is hitting .333 (13 for 39) with five doubles and a triple.

Featured Card:  I liked that the Phillies tipped their cap to the retiring David Letterman in this article on their website.  In honor of Letterman's final television show, which aired Wednesday night, here's Cole Hamels reading Top 10 Things that Went Through Cole Hamels' Mind After Winning the World Series.

2014 Stadium Club #170 Ryan Howard

Phillies 4, Rockies 2
Game 42 - Late Wednesday Night, May 20th in Denver
Record - 18-24, 4th Place, 6 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Ryan Howard's monster solo home run helped secure Severino Gonzalez's second big league win as the Phillies defeated the Rockies, 4-2.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won seven of their last nine games.

What Happened:  It was chilly in Denver, but Howard enjoyed a 3 for 5 night with a double, home run and two runs scored.  Jeff Francoeur and Odubel Herrera added RBI singles.  Gonzalez pitched five innings, allowing just a run on five hits and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth to secure his 11th save of the season.

Featured Card:  I'm more than happy to start showing more Howard baseball cards in these game summary posts.  This is his card from last year's Stadium Club set.  I love it when Topps actually uses photos we haven't seen before and for this reason I think last year's Stadium Club set is one of the most underrated and overlooked sets from 2014.

1984 Fleer Stickers #123 Paul Owens MG

Rockies 6, Phillies 5
Game 41 - Late Tuesday Night, May 19th in Denver
Record - 17-24, 4th Place, 6 1/2 games behind the Mets and Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The six-game winning streak came to an end as Nick Hundley hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth off Justin De Fratus leading to the 6-5 Phillies loss.

What It Means:  The once reliable bullpen has been shaky in 2015.  The Philllies tied the game at five in the top of the eighth on a two-run single from Maikel Franco, but it was all for naught.

What Happened:  Aaron Harang had his roughest start of the year, allowing three first inning runs although they were all unearned as a result of a costly error by Franco.  Making up for his earlier miscue, Franco's big hit in the eighth capped a three hit, three RBI night.

Featured Card:  I'm a little behind in posting this week so I haven't had a chance to comment on the Marlins naming their former GM Dan Jennings as their new manager.  I was actually surprised that such a big deal was made of this hiring since the Phillies had already done this twice before in the past forty-plus years.

Phillies GM Paul Owens took over for Frank Lucchesi in July 1972 and assumed the manager's duties again in 1983 when he fired Pat Corrales (while the Phillies were in first place!) and stuck around throughout the 1984 season.  Owens led the Wheeze Kids to the 1983 World Series and only time will tell if Jennings will have the same success.

Transaction:  Reliever Hector Neris was optioned back to Lehigh Valley following this game to make room for Wednesday's starting pitcher Severino Gonzalez, who was recalled.
