Reds 6, Phillies 5
Game 60 - Saturday Afternoon, June 7th in Cincinnati
Record - 25-35
One Sentence Summary: The Phillies battled back, but they couldn't push across one last extra run as the Reds took game two of the series, 6-5.
What It Means: Can you believe the Phillies have already played 60 games?
What Happened: The Phillies had two runners thrown out at home plate in the 6th and 7th innings. The first call was controversial, and earned manager Ryne Sandberg his first ejection of the season when he asked the home plate umpire to explain the baffling home plate blocking/lane clearing rule.
The offense almost doubled the number of total hits from the Reds with 11 hits to the Reds' six. Marlon Byrd (9), Carlos Ruiz (2) and Jimmy Rollins (8) all contributed home runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome another poor outing from Roberto Hernandez. Hernandez lasted only four innings.
Featured Card: Two Larry Bowa cards in one week? When Sandberg was ejected in the sixth inning, Bowa took over as manager of the club for the first time since being fired from that position with two games remaining in the 2004 season.
