Phillies 12, Cubs 1
Game 114 - Thursday Afternoon, August 8th in Philadelphia
Record - 52-62, 4th Place, 17 1/2 games behind the Braves
One Sentence Summary: Led by Cody Asche and his former IronPigs teammates, the Phillies demolished the Cubs, 12-1.
What It Means: It means the Phils have won their first series since before the All-Star break.
What Went Right: Asche finished the game a triple short of the cycle, and hit his first career home run in the fourth. Darin Ruf and John McDonald (!) also homered in the winning effort. Ethan Martin earned his first career win after pitching five strong innings and allowing just the lone Cubs run. Chase Utley, whose two-year contract extension became official during the ballgame, doubled twice.
Featured Card: Topps needs to start producing some Asche cards! To date, this is Asche's lone 2013 baseball card, from the Lehigh Valley IronPigs' team issued set. My hope is that he'll start to show up in some of the late season or post-season Topps releases.
