Padres 4, Phillies 3 (10 Innings)
Game 77 - Late Monday Night, June 24th in San Diego
Record - 36-41, 3rd Place, 8 games behind the Braves
Colossal Post-Vacation Catch-Up, Part 3 of 9
One Sentence Summary: Jonathan Papelbon blew his fourth save in eight days, and the Padres pulled off a painful 4-3 extra inning win.
What It Means: Glad I didn't see any of this game either!
What Went Wrong: Cliff Lee pitched eight shut-out innings, before allowing a single and a double to start the ninth. With the Phillies up 3-0, Papelbon was brought in to try to record the save. He didn't. The first batter he faced, Kyle Blanks, hit a two-run single. A few batters later, with Blanks on third and two outs, Carlos Ruiz allowed a passed ball and the save was officially blown. Blanks came through again in the tenth with a bases loaded single off reliever Justin De Fratus to win the ballgame.
Featured Card: Papelbon has been the subject of multiple trade rumors this past week, and I don't know if I would be that sad to see him go.
