First Game: The expansion New York Mets faced off against the Phillies for the first time on April 27, 1962 at the Polo Grounds. The Phillies won a slugfest, 11-9, as Johnny Callison went 4 for 5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Cal McLish was the winning pitcher for the Phils, lasting six innings and giving up four runs on eight hits. Former Phillie great Richie Ashburn led off and played center field for the Mets, but he had a rough day at the plate. Whitey went 0 for 5.
