Game 117 - Phils Offense Explodes on Twins

Game 117 - Friday Night, August 11th in Philadelphia
Record - 65-52, 2nd Place, 9 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies offense continues to heat up, banging out 15 hits and three more home runs in this 13-2 series opening win.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won nine of their last 12 games and six of their last seven.  They have a 4 1/2 game lead in the Wild Card race, 2 1/2 games ahead of the second Wild Card team, the Giants.

What Happened:  The Twins scored first, with Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler hitting two quick home runs off Cristopher Sanchez in the second inning.  But the Phillies powered back in the bottom of the second, plating six runs.  Bryson Stott, J.T. Realmuto, Johan Rojas, Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm and Trea Turner all knocked in runs in the inning.  Turner would add an RBI-double in the fourth to make it 7-2 Phillies, and Nick Castellanos singled home Turner for another run.  Bryson Stott and J.T. Realmuto hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth, and Rojas capped the scoring with his first big league home run in the eighth, off Twins' left fielder, Jordan Luplow.  Luplow had imitated Phillies' closer Craig Kimbrel before delivering the pitch to Rojas, arm bent at an angle prior to entering his "windup."  Sanchez was the beneficiary of the run support, pitching six solid innings and earning his first win of 2023.

Featured Card/Field Report:  All four of us were there, enjoying the offensive outburst from Section C of the Diamond Club.  Pregame, I was happy to catch up with a former college suite mate of mine visiting with his family from Milwaukee.  It was also cool to watch Hall of Famer Jim Kaat throw out a ceremonial first pitch to his former catcher, Bob Boone.  This was the first night of Alumni Weekend, and we'll be back tonight, hoping to add as many autographs as possible to Doug's growing collection.

I achieved a personal milestone at this game.  The Twins were the only one of 30 MLB teams I had never seen in person until last night.  With the Twins off the list, I've now seen all 30 teams live in action.

1974 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  39
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photo cards issued throughout the 1970s, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  Most of the cards (excluding the cards for Ollie Brown, Jay Johnstone, Pete Richert and perhaps Gene Garber) have blue facsimile autographs on the fronts.  The backs of the photo cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1974.

How Distributed:  The photo cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in
order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cards were ever available in complete set form.  I believe after an original batch of 32 photo cards, featuring the manager, the coaches, and 27 players, an additional 7 cards were released throughout the season, as evidenced by the inclusion of Richert, Brown and Garber who started the season with other teams.  Richert was purchased from the Cardinals on June 21st, Brown was selected off waivers from the Astros on June 24th and Garber was purchased from the Royals on July 12th.  (Steve F. and Rick G. clued me in to the existence of the Garber card in comments to this set's original post almost six years ago.)

The back of a 1974 Phillies schedule shown here contains photos of the entire 25-man opening day roster, plus Mike Rogodzinski and Wayne Twitchell who would play in their first games in mid-April and early May respectively.  I'm making the assumption the photos shown here represent the original 32 photo cards, with 7 cards added later for the 3 players acquired along with Larry Cox, Jesus Hernaiz, Johnstone and Larry Christenson.  Ed Farmer was also added right before the season, purchased from the Yankees on March 21st, which explains why his background is different than all other "original" photo cards.  Finally, the Billy Grabarkewitz photo card is identical to his 1973 photo card, with the exception of the facsimile autograph placement.

Surprises:  The only surprise (to me at least) in the inclusion of a Garber card.  Acquired on July 12th, he didn't make his Phillies debut until July 31st.

Omissions:  40 players appeared with the Phillies in 1974 and only 6 of them do not appear in this set.  Reliever Dave Wallace gets the shaft for the second year in a row, as he appeared in 3 games in early May.  Outfield prospects Alan Bannister (26 games) and Jerry Martin (13 games) got overlooked, as did left-handed pitcher Tom Underwood (7 games).  The last two omissions each appeared in one sole game for the Phillies - pitcher Erskine Thomason on September 18th and catcher John Stearns on September 22nd.  Stearns would go on to enjoy a 10-year, All-Star career with the Mets.

Variations/Rarities:  The checklist found at The Trading Card Database lists four cards with autograph variations, featuring a slightly different placement of the facsimile autograph on each card.

Surprises:  I'm surprised only by the comprehensiveness of this set's checklist.  35 players appeared in a game in 1973 for the Phillies and only 2 were omitted from this set (see below).  The Phillies were issuing new cards as late as mid to late August for newly acquired players too.  George Culver was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on August 10th and Billy Grabarkewitz was acquired from the Angels on August 14th.

Even Essian, who was in the Phillies' system the entire season and was a September call-up received a card.  The catcher didn't make his big league debut until September 15th.

Omissions:  The 2 players omitted are catcher Larry Cox and reliever Dave Wallace.  Cox is a bit of a surprise omission as he was on the team's opening day roster, but he appeared in only one game on April 18th before getting sent back down to Triple-A Eugene for the rest of the season.  Wallace appeared in four games with the Phillies, pitching 3 2/3 innings, between mid-July and early August.

Variations/Rarities:  Based on the checklist found at The Trading Card Database, there are signature variations for the Bob Boone and Mike Schmidt cards.  The cards contain the same photos, but the signature placement differs slightly on both cards.  I've also added a Del Unser card to my collection without a blue facsimile autograph, shown below.

Finally, there are three players (Bill Robinson, Cesar Tovar and Wayne Twitchell) who have two versions of their cards available featuring different photos.  I'm not sure which variation is more prevalent than the others, so I've listed these variations as part of the main checklist above.

1981 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photo cards issued since 1970, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  The backs of the cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1981.  Some of the cards contain blue facsimile autographs as noted on the checklist below.  There are six cards available with a horizontal orientation as also noted below.  The Sparky Lyle card contains an uncorrected error with the spelling of his first name as "Sparkey."

How Distributed:  The cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe these cards were ever available in complete set form.

The set's composition features the entire 25-man opening day roster, the manager and all six coaches.  No one who made his 1981 season debut after opening day received a photo card.

Surprises:  I'm more impressed than surprised the Phillies were able to issue photo cards for Dick Davis, Gary Matthews and Mike Proly as that trio of players was acquired in the month before the start of the regular season.  Proly was acquired from the White Sox on April 1st and his photo card features a photo taken at Veterans Stadium.  The earliest date that photo could have been taken was April 17th, Proly's home debut with the Phillies.

Omissions:  The only player to appear with the Phillies during the first half of this strike-shortened season and not appear on a photo card is George Vukovich, who made his season debut on May 29th.  The 10 players who made their season debuts after the strike ended, and after the second half of the season began on August 10th, are all omitted from the set:  Dickie Noles, Mark Davis, Warren Brusstar, Ryne Sandberg, Bob Dernier, Len Matuszek, Ozzie Virgil, Dan Larson, Jerry Reed and Don McCormack.

Variations/Rarities:  Collectors Rick and Steve once again filled in with some rarities (or potential rarities) when I originally posted on this set almost six years ago.  Tim McCarver joined the broadcast booth and received a card showing him wearing a headset.  Steve notes variations may exist for the Garry Maddox and Proly cards.  

Finally, and similar to 1980, there is a black and white 1981 card of the Phillie Phanatic issued by Harrison/Erickson that is roughly the same size as the rest of the set.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  We're on the home stretch of taking a look at the Phillies-related baseball cards within the 1982 Topps set.  Here are four of the five In Action cards featuring Phillies from the set, and I had previously posted the Pete Rose card here.

Alumni Weekend Continues with More Autographs

Mets 6, Phillies 2
Game 115 - Sunday Afternoon, August 13th in Philadelphia
Record - 43-72, 5th place, 26 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets dampened the good vibes brought on by the annual Phillies Alumni Day, defeating the Phillies 6-2.

What It Means:  The Mets took three out of four in this series, and the Phillies now head to the West Coast for games in San Diego and San Francisco.

What Happened:  Zach Eflin allowed home runs to Michael Conforto and Curtis Granderson in his 5 1/3 innings of work.  The Phillies went 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position, failing to capitalize twice with the bases loaded.  The fifth inning was cut short when Odubel Herrera ran right into an out at third, as Freddy Galvis was already manning the base.  Rhys Hoskins collected his first big league hit and RBI.


Featured Cards/Field Report:  My wife Jenna and youngest son Ben joined in the fun for this game, as the four of us set out to meet some more Phillies alumni.  The Phillies truly do a great job with this stuff.  Before the start of the game, five tables were set up throughout the ballpark, each with two members of the 1980 World Championship team signing autographs.  We made it to four of the five tables, with the boys getting autographs from Warren Brusstar, Dickie Noles, Bob Boone, Bake McBride, Larry Christenson, Marty Bystrom, Manny Trillo and Greg Luzinski.

We settled into our seats and enjoyed the pre-game ceremony introducing over 40 former Phillies players and once again honoring the late Darren Daulton.  Members of the 1993 Phillies team each appeared on the field wearing Daulton's #10 jersey.


Mid-way through the game, we walked over to an alumni photo both and the boys had their pictures taken with Jim Eisenreich, Milt Thompson, Kevin Stocker and Tommy Greene.  Doug added autographs from Stocker and Greene to the Wall of Fame print he had received on Saturday night. By Doug's tally, he added 22 (!) alumni autographs to his collection on Saturday and Sunday.

I should also mention we received four 15-card packs of the special Topps National Baseball Card Day Phillies sets as we entered the ballpark.  This is a fantastic giveaway, the only problem with it being there are 20 cards in a complete set.  With the four packs we received, we were able to put together only two complete sets.  Still, it's a great looking set and Jenna and Ben don't seem to mind too much (yet) that their sets are missing a few cards.
