2014 Topps Update #US-181
"US" prefix in front of all card numbers.

Completed in November 2016, thanks to Doug's grandmother.  Cards needed were received at Doug's 10th birthday party.

Thanks to Section 36 and Dan from The Other World for taking a chunk out of this list!

2015 Chachi Checklist is Live!

2014 Chachi #73
With the final Phillies roster moves announced this afternoon, the first 33 cards in the 2015 Chachi set have been revealed on the set's official checklist page.  Who's ready for Jeff Francoeur's first unofficial Phillies card?  Who's been waiting weeks to finally see Jeanmar Gomez in red pinstripes on virtual cardboard?  Who among us hasn't spent time daydreaming about finally gazing upon an Odubel Herrera Phillies card?  Our wait is almost over.

Featured above is the checklist from the 2014 Chachi set, which borrowed the 1988 Topps design.  I've featured a number of cards from the various 2015 Chachi insert sets already, but the official cards will debut shortly after opening day and will use the colorful 1985 Topps design.

* * *

This post will also serve to wrap up the final transactions made on Easter Sunday to parse the roster down to the required 25 players.

Final Camp Head Count:  28 + 1 - 4 = 25.  As reported Saturday night, Dustin McGowan was officially signed and will join the Phillies bullpen.  He joins non-roster invitees Francoeur and Andres Blanco who also officially made the opening day roster.

Outfielder Jordan Danks was optioned to Lehigh Valley, while Chad Billingsley, Jonathan Pettibone and Mario Hollands will start the season on the disabled list.  Hollands was placed on the 60-day disabled list, opening up the needed 40-man roster spot.

Here's a final run-down of the team's off-season moves, although I'll add to this list if any of the other offseason non-roster invitee signings eventually make their way up to the big club.

2014 Phillies Team Issue - 1st Edition

Number of Cards:  41
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  This is the third of four straight team issued sets featuring basically the same design elements.  The player's name, number and position are listed at the bottom of the card in a red and blue design with the Phillies script logo appearing in one of the top corners.  All photos used for this set were taken during spring training 2014.  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  The set was available for sale at the ballpark from the beginning of the season through mid-August when it was replaced with a new second series set.  I purchased my set on April 12th and it contained the apparently rare Bobby Abreu card.  Abreu was with the club throughout spring training but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

Complete Standard Checklist:  The cards are unnumbered, but I've presented them below ordered by uniform number.
One and Done (1):  Lincoln
First Appearances (7):  Asche, Burnett, Franco, Gwynn Jr., Nieves, R. Hernandez, Martin
Returning Players (23):  Abreu, Adams, Aumont, Bastardo, Brown, Byrd, De Fratus, Diekman, Galvis, Hamels, C. Hernandez, Howard, Kendrick, Lee, Mayberry Jr., Papelbon, Pettibone, Revere, Rollins, Rosenberg, Ruf, Ruiz, Utley

This is the only place to find a Brad Lincoln Phillies card.  The reliever made it into two games with the club, pitching to a 11.57 ERA over 2 1/3 innings.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Manager (1):  Sandberg
Coaches (7):  Bowa, Henderson, Mackanin, McClure, Mizerock, Nichols, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1)
Broadcasters (1):  Newcomers Jamie Moyer and Matt Stairs join Gregg Murphy, Larry Andersen, Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke and Jim Jackson.
Commemorative Cards (0)

Variations/Rarities:  I'm not aware of any variations or rarities available with this set, but based on collector Steve's experience I know that the Abreu card was pulled shortly after the set was issued.  Apparently most sets available for sale up until the issuance of the second series contain only 40 cards.

In December 2019, fellow collector Rick found a version of the Freddy Galvis card for sale at the annual Phillies holiday sale with a Citizens Bank Park logo on the back and a 2015 copyright.

Trivia:  Maikel Franco made his Phillies debut on September 2, 2014, wearing #7.  His card in this set contains the #74 he wore as a non-roster invitee during spring training.
Resources:  This set hasn't made it yet onto any of the mainstream online checklists/databases.

2014 Phillies Team Issue 2 #19 Tony Gwynn, Jr.

The Phillies announced on Friday that outfielder Tony Gwynn, Jr. had elected free agency.  Gwynn had been outrighted off the 40-man roster and rather than accept a demotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he'll try his luck elsewhere.  In 80 games with the Phillies, Gwynn hit .152 with three RBIs.

He appeared in both team issued sets, and he'll have a standard sized Phillies card in the upcoming Topps Update set.

Moving On
Reid Brignac (10/2/14) - Elected free agency.
Jeremy Horst (10/2/14) - Elected free agency.
Jeff Manship (10/2/14) - Elected free agency.
Sean O'Sullivan (10/6/14) - Outrighted off the 40-man roster and released.
Tony Gwynn, Jr. (10/10/14) - Outrighted off the 40-man roster and elected free agency.

2013 Topps Chrome Dynamic Die-Cuts #DY-CH Cole Hamels

Phillies 6, Braves 1 (13 Innings)
Game 67 - Monday Night, June 16th in Atlanta
Record - 30-38, Tied for 4th Place, 5 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Cole Hamels pitched seven outstanding innings and Jonathan Papelbon survived a shaky ninth inning as the Phillies defeated the Braves, 1-0.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies came back to win in 13 by a score of 6-1 after Jonathan Papelbon couldn't save Cole Hamels' extremely well-pitched game.

What It Means:  Somehow the Phillies are just 5 1/2 games out of first place despite being eight games under .500.

What Happened:  Hamels' night (7 IP, 0 runs, 6 strikeouts) was all for naught as Papelbon allowed the Braves to tie the game in the ninth.  The Phillies bullpen (other than Papelbon) continued to impress with five scoreless innings, led by two scoreless frames from Antonio Bastardo.  The Phils plated five runs in the 13th thanks to a costly error from Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and a two-run triple from Reid Brignac.

2014 Phillies Team Issue #19
Featured Cards:  I had already scanned in this die-cut card of Hamels' prior to Papelbon's blown save, so I'm going with it anyway.  This is what happens when you mix Topps Chrome with one of those old 7-11 Slurpee discs.

Transaction:  The baseball family lost one of its all-time greats yesterday when Tony Gwynn passed away at the all-too young age of 54.  Gwynn had been battling cancer, which he believed resulted from years of abusing chewing tobacco.  It was sad and shocking news.

His son, Tony Gwynn, Jr., was placed on the Phillies bereavement list, and outfielder Aaron Altherr was recalled from Double-A Reading.  Altherr has struggled this year, but he was the only healthy outfield option currently on the team's 40-man roster.

2014 Chachi Preview #4 Tony Gwynn, Jr.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. may be a long-shot to make the opening day roster, but I didn't want that to hold him back from having his very own Chachi card.  I was browsing through the team's picture day photos posted on the ESPN photo wire, and once I saw that Gwynn's picture was included I knew he was going to get his first Phillies card - albeit a virtual one.  If Gwynn makes the club, he'll be the third son of a Hall of Famer to play for the Phillies.

Dick Sisler (1948-1951), son of George Sisler (HOF 1939)
Earl Averill, Jr. (1963), son of Earl Averill (HOF 1975)
Tony Gwynn, Jr. (2014?), son of Tony Gwynn (HOF 2007)

And I might as well post an updated list of non-roster invitees.  Pitcher Chad Gaudin failed his physical on the first day of spring training and was released.
