Game 98 - Saturday Night, July 22nd in Cleveland
Record - 52-46, Tied for 2nd Place, 11 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Managing just two hits against Guardians' pitching, and allowing the only run of the game to score on a botched pop up, the Phillies produced another frustrating loss, dropping this game, 1-0.

What It Means:  They'll try not to get swept out of Cleveland this afternoon with Aaron Nola on the mound.

What Happened:  Zack Wheeler was the hard-luck loser, allowing just a run on five hits in his seven innings.  He struck out eight.  The Guardians scored in the sixth when a pop up from Jose Ramirez landed between Brandon Marsh, Bryson Stott and Nick Castellanos, scoring Amed Rosario from first base.  It was like watching a bad Little League play.  Trea Turner singled in the first and Edmundo Sosa led off the sixth with a double, but wouldn't move as Kyle Schwarber, Turner and Castellanos went down in order.

Featured Card:  Old friend Enyel De Los Santos, now one of the Guardians' most reliable relievers, pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out Marsh.  De Los Santos has appeared in 92 games for the Guardians over the past two seasons, earning a record of 9-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 94 innings pitched.  He was all over the 2019 baseball card sets with the Phillies, including this card from the 2019 Bowman Heritage set.

In 2020, Enyel De Los Santos was on the Phillies' active roster for three games in early August, but then was sent back to Lehigh Valley without an appearance.  He was then designated for assignment on August 9th to make room on the 40-man roster for Spencer Howard.  De Los Santos cleared waivers and headed back to Lehigh Valley.  To this point in 2021, De Los Santos has appeared in three Phillies games, pitching two innings, and allowing three earned runs for a 13.50 ERA.

One Sentence Summary:  Tanner Roark and five Blue Jays' relievers limited the Phillies to three hits in this 7-1 loss.

What It Means:  In a game oddly not televised or broadcast over the radio, Phillies fans had to follow along on social media, wait for Gameday to refresh or simply ignore this game.  The Blue Jays have made the decision to go without a radio broadcast team in 2021, and will simulcast its television broadcast over the radio for all regular season games.  As a huge fan of listening to baseball on the radio, this seems like a horrible idea to me.

What Happened:  The lone Phillies run scored in the fourth when Odubel Herrera singled, was doubled to third by Alec Bohm and then came home on a wild pitch from Blue Jays pitcher Rafael Dolis.  The Phillies pitching was decent in this game through the first five innings, with starter Adonis Media and reliever Enyel De Los Santos looking the strongest.  Mini-camp invitee David Paulino was hit hard, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk in his inning of work against his former team.

Featured Card:  De Los Santos shouldn't be forgotten when it comes to potential Phillies relievers and/or spot starters in 2021.  He struck out the side in his one inning of work, and looked impressive doing it.  De Los Santos was briefly recalled by the team in 2020 but never saw any game action.  The bulk of his Phillies baseball card output came in 2019, including this Topps Archives card, and his lone card from 2020 can be found in the Topps Total set.

The Phillies threw us a curveball on Tuesday afternoon, finalizing their list of 12 non-roster invitees and adding 19 more players as what they're calling mini-camp invitees.  A byproduct of our pandemic era is that the club needs to limit the number of players in camp, so we get this new wrinkle for who we'll see in Clearwater beginning tomorrow.  If you're keeping score at home, there's 40 players on the big league roster, 12 non-roster invitees and 19 mini-camp invitees, for a total of 71 players suiting up.  That's the same number of players the Phillies started with in Clearwater last February.  The mini campers will train with the big club but report to the minor league clubhouse.

New additions to non-roster invitee list since my last update are outfielder Travis Jankowski along with catchers Rodolfo Duran and Jeff Mathis.  Jankowski is a six-year big league veteran and he appeared in 16 games last year with the Reds.  He's a career .238 hitter and can play all three outfield positions.  Mathis is a 16-year veteran having spent the last two seasons with the Rangers.  A back-up for much of his career, Mathis has played with the Angels (2005-2011), Blue Jays (2012), Marlins (2013-2016), Diamondbacks (2017-2018) and Rangers (2019-2020).

Notable below is that David Paulino has been seemingly demoted from the non-roster invitee list to the mini-camp invitee list.  Pitchers Enyel De Los Santos and JD Hammer, along with outfielder Odubel Herrera, all of whom haven't played with the Phillies since 2019, are also on the mini-camp invitee list.  Play ball!

While Jenna took Ben to a family graduation party in Quakertown, Doug and I travelled a little further north to take in an IronPigs game in Allentown.  The rain held out until after the game was over, and it was a wonderful way to spend Father's Day.  Doug continued his minor league ballpark tradition of (a) getting many autographs and (b) getting a ball tossed to him at some point during the game.

Unfortunately, starting pitcher Enyel De Los Santos gave up a trio of home runs (two to Bobby Bradley) and the Clippers, the top affiliate for the Indians, won the game 3-1.  Following the game, the IronPigs opened up the outfield for a Father's Day catch on the field, which was the highlight of the afternoon for both of us.  The afternoon outing merited another 10 cards in the growing Ballpark Visits insert set.  Our next stop is scheduled for Lakewood in July to take in a BlueClaws game.

Meanwhile in Atlanta, the Phillies had a very bad day.

Game 71 - Sunday Afternoon, June 16th in Atlanta
Record - 39-32, 2nd place, 2 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The bullpen game concept completely backfired as the Braves demolished each Phillies pitcher presented to them.

What It Means:  With J.T. Realmuto and Jay Bruce out of the line-up with minor injuries, and no reliable fifth starter in sight, this was a massacre of a ballgame.  Moves will need to be made if the Phillies hope to catch the Braves, and they'll enter the week looking up and two and half games back.

What Happened:  Only utility player Sean Rodriguez, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, escaped without allowing a Braves run.  Vince Velasquez (2 1/3 innings, 4 runs), Cole Irvin (3 2/3 innings, 6 runs) and Jerad Eickhoff (1 inning, 5 runs) were all torched.

Transactions:  Pat Neshek was activated from the Injured List and Irvin was recalled from the IronPigs.  Ranger Suarez and Edgar Garcia were sent back down, but neither arrived in Allentown in time for Sunday's IronPigs game.

Record - 26-19, 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola struck out a career high 12 batters and Bryce Harper blasted a home run into Ashburn Alley as the Phillies held on to win, 2-1.

What It Means:  They'll go for the series sweep this afternoon.

What Happened:  Nola (4-0) pitched a solid ballgame, allowing a run on eight hits before running into trouble in the seventh inning.  Adam Morgan and Seranthony Dominguez got through the seventh, before turning the game over to Hector Neris for a two-inning save.

Harper's blast was measured at 466 feet and it's one of the longest in the short history of Citizens Bank Park.  The Phillies took the lead for good in the third when Jean Segura scored on a wild pitch.

2019 Topps Now Game-Used Base #13PHI

Featured Cards/Field Report:  Doug and I enjoyed this game from our semi-usual perch in Section 315.  Doug stationed himself at the corner of the Phillies dugout opposite first base for about an hour prior to gametime, and his persistence paid off with autographs from Rhys Hoskins, Zach Eflin and Enyel De Los Santos.  We witnessed Harper's bomb and Nola's masterful performance, and still found time to enjoy our first visit to the new Shake Shack.

While walking around the ballpark before the game, we noticed Harper Topps Now cards for sale at the Phillies Authentics stand on the third base side.  I couldn't pass up adding one of the game-used base cards from opening day to my collection, and since Doug has been keeping his grades up he got one too.  It appears as if this card is exclusive to Citizens Bank Park.  Checking the MLB Archive on the Topps Now website, versions of this card were originally for sale numbered to 1, 5, 10 and 25, with the cards numbered 13D, 13C, 13B and 13A in descending order of availability.  The Phillies Authentics stand was selling unnumbered versions along with versions numbered to 49 and 99.  Our unnumbered version carries a number on the back of 13PHI, and was available for sale at what I deemed to be a reasonable price of $30.

We'll make it a point to check that stand from now on to see if any other Topps Now cards are available for sale at future games.

This has become an annual exercise of mine, tracking where everyone ended up after the masses scattered from Clearwater.  We pay so much attention (at least I do) to every non-roster invitee addition and every prospect added to the 40-man roster, and then when the season starts it's hard to remember who even suited up for the Phillies during spring training.

When the Phillies played their first exhibition game on February 22nd, the camp head count stood at 61 players.  Ten days later, the tally increased by one with the addition of free-agent Bryce Harper.  Here's where the 62 players ended up by the time opening day rosters were set on March 28th.

Injured List (2):  Tommy Hunter and Roman Quinn.  Hunter made this list to start the season for the second year in a row.

Released (5):  Jeremy Bleich, Drew Butera, Edward Paredes, Gregorio Petit and Trevor Plouffe

Drew Butera was released on March 22nd and signed with the Colorado Rockies on March 25th.  As of this writing, the other four players released have yet to resurface with another organization.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  December 15, 2017 - Galvis Traded to Padres . . . Early Friday afternoon, the Phillies traded shortstop Freddy Galvis to the Padres for Double-A starting pitcher Enyel De Los Santos.  Having made his debut on April 5, 2012, Galvis had been the team's longest tenured player, and that title now falls to Cesar Hernandez.  Moving the 28-year-old Galvis to the Padres opens up the shortstop position for J.P. Crawford.

Galvis had become a veteran leader in the Phillies clubhouse over the past few seasons, and he obtained his goal of playing in all 162 games in 2017.  The team's regular shortstop beginning in 2015, Galvis was the club's opening day second baseman in 2012 due to an injury to Chase Utley.  In six seasons with the Phils, Galvis hit .245 over 642 games while providing solid infield defense.  I'll miss seeing Galvis out at short, but with his free agency approaching at the end of the 2018 season, it was time for him to move on and give Crawford a shot.

I have 47 different Galvis baseball cards in my collection, beginning with his 2007 card in the Williamsport Crosscutters team set and ending with his 2017 Topps Now Players Weekend card.  He'll most likely find his way to a few more Phillies cards within early 2018 Topps releases.

De Los Santos spent the 2017 season with the San Antonio Missions.  Todd Zolecki Tweeted that he was the No. 13 prospect in the Padres system and he'll land at the No. 9 spot in the Phillies system.  That seems like a pretty good return for Galvis.  De Los Santos appeared in the 2016 Topps Heritage Minors set.

One Sentence Summary:  Enyel De Los Santos made his big league debut, pitching 6 1/3 strong innings and Maikel Franco hit a 3-run home run in the 2nd as the Phils dropped the Mets, 7-3.

What It Means:  It's fitting that as our vacation ended, the Phillies found themselves atop the division by themselves.

What Happened:  De Los Santos struck out six, allowing three runs on five hits.  Franco had the big hit, but Nick Williams added a two-run single in the 3rd and Odubel Herrera hit a solo home run (16) in the 5th.

Featured Card:  The sole "Phillies" card in my collection for De Los Santos features him wearing the uniform of the San Antonio Missions in a photo from last season.

Transactions:  There were a flurry of roster moves before this game.  De Los Santos and infielder Trevor Plouffe had their contracts purchased from Lehigh Valley.  Reliever Jake Thompson and outfielder Dylan Cozens were both optioned to Lehigh Valley while reliever Hoby Milner was designated for assignment.  To make additional room on the 40-man roster, Pedro Florimon was moved to the 60-day disabled list.

Field Report:  On the final day of our whirlwind trip, we toured Coors Field and enjoyed a hot and steamy Rockies game from behind first base.  Our behind the scenes tour included a trip down to the field and into the Rockies dugout.  Prior to the game (and it was HOT), we enjoyed batting practice from the outfield bleachers, with Doug catching a ball thrown to him from Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley.

Doug also snagged an autograph from Trevor Story prior to the game, but just missed adding an autograph from Charlie Blackmon.  (Although Blackmon tossed Doug a ball later in the game.)  In the 3rd inning, we made our way back to the outfield to visit with Dinger, the Rockies mascot.  Noticing my Phillies hat, Dinger inscribed my autographed card with "Tell the Phanatic Dinger sends his regards."  (Dinger - Consider the message sent!)

The Diamondbacks prevailed over the Rockies, 5-3, on home runs from Nick Ahmed, David Peralta and A.J. Pollock.

Our trip was fantastic, and we made so many great memories.  The only thing left to do now is plan the next road trip and cross a few more ballparks and National Parks off our list.  I'm thinking the summer of 2020 would be a good time to head out on the road again . . .
