1980 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  38
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"

Description:  As was the case with all Phillies team-issued photo cards issued since 1970, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  The backs of the cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves they're from 1980.  Some of the cards contain blue facsimile autographs, as noted on the checklist below.  One way to tell if the photo card is from 1980 is the fact that these are the only photo cards from this era on which the majority of the players' names aren't all in capital letters.  I've listed below those few cards on which the player's name is in all capitals.  (Thanks to Phillies collector Rick and his scanned checklist shown here.)

How Distributed:  The cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe these cards were ever available in complete set form.

I'm theorizing that the cards with the players' names in capital letters were issued later in the season, as Ramon Aviles, Dan Larson and Bob Walk were not on the opening day roster and all made their 1980 debuts in late April or May.  Nino Espinosa and Warren Brusstar are the outliers here as those pitchers made their 1980 debuts in July and their names on their cards use upper and lower case letters.  Brusstar, who started the season on the disabled list and first pitched for the Phillies on July 13th, is the latest player to appear in a game in 1980 and appear on one of these photo cards.

Surprises:  Not to sound like too much of a weirdo, but the seven-year-old me would have loved to have added Scott Munninghoff's card to my collection.  He was one of those guys who was in the prospect section of the yearbook and no one in my little circle of young Phillies fans had any idea who he was.  Munninghoff made the team's opening day roster, appeared in four games, and was sent back to Oklahoma City in early May where he'd stay the rest of the season.

Omissions:  The entire opening day roster, every coach and manager Dallas Green all received cards.  Every player to have suited up for the Phillies in 1980 prior to September also received cards, with Espinosa and Brusstar, as noted above, being the latest additions.  The Phillies had 9 September additions to their roster who understandably did not receive photo cards:  Jay Loviglio, Marty Bystrom, Bob Dernier, Tim McCarver, Orlando Isales, Mark Davis, Sparky Lyle, Don McCormack and Ozzie Virgil.

Variations/Rarities:  Rose appeared on two different versions of photo cards in 1980, no doubt due to high autograph request demands.  Phillies collector Rick sent me a scan of his checklist for this set cluing me in to the fact that cards for Bake McBride and Dickie Noles can be found both with and without facsimile autographs.  A few years back, I also added Lerrin LaGrow and Keith Moreland cards to my collection without facsimile autographs.  Also, fellow collector Steve indicates there could be a Nino Espinosa variation card available and for the sake of completeness, I've added it here too.

Finally, while not part of the team-issued set, there is a 1980 black and white photo card of the Phillie Phanatic issued by Harrison/Erickson and this card is roughly the same size as the rest of the 1980 set.

It was only through the awesome photos provided at The Trading Card Database for this set I was able to originally identify these cards as being from 1980.  Collector Dave Sosidka uploaded the checklist and scans of all cards to the database back in 2011.  However, The Trading Card Database entry for this set omits the card for Munninghoff and the portrait version of Rose's card.

The Beckett database entry for this set lists the set as "Phillies Postcards" and omits the cards for Garry Maddox, Noles, John Vukovich and the second Rose card.

This set was originally featured in a post back in December 2014, and I'm going to slowly go through these team-issued set posts and update them with new information gathered (if any) over the past five years.

1982 Topps Appreciation:  Here are two 1982 Topps cards of former Brewers players who also had/have Phillies connections.  Bob McClure is the team's current pitching coach, and he took place in the 1982 reunion festivities last week in Milwaukee.

Here's what I wrote about Randy Lerch's career in a series preview post from 2012:

Randy Lerch was drafted by the Phillies in 1973 and made his Major League debut at the end of the 1975 season.  Primarily a starter, Lerch's best season with the Phillies was 1978, when he hit career highs in wins (11) and strikeouts (96).  Lerch famously hit two home runs on September 30, 1978, in the division clinching game for the Phillies.  He had a decent season in 1979, going 10-13 with a 3.74 ERA in 214 innings pitched - a career high.  He was shipped to the Brewers after earning his World Series ring in 1980.  From 1981 to 1984, Lerch appeared pitched with the Brewers, Expos and Giants before making his way back to the Phillies system.  He appeared in 4 games with the 1986 Phillies before calling it a career.

I spent a lot of time in 2015 with the 1985 Topps set, as it was the basis for this year's custom Chachi set and I tried to feature relevant cards in each series preview post.  As I've done the last few years, it's time to tally up the Phillies related cards in the 1985 Topps set.  I came up with 153 cards from the base set and the 132-card traded set, falling just short of the 154 Phillies related cards in the 1988 Topps set.  (Links to past posts are below.)

The list below contains every player, coach or manager who spent time with the Phillies and also appeared in the 1985 Topps set.  You'll notice that the N.L. Central blows away the competition thanks to the future and ex-Phillies-heavy Cubs, Reds, Pirates and Cardinals.

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies suffered a complete and total beat down from the Mets in a game that featured 11 home runs.

What It Means:  As Jayson Stark points out in this Tweet, the Phillies have scored 13 runs in two games against Zack Greinke and Jacob deGrom since the All-Star break . . . and they've lost both games.

What Happened:  Home runs from Ryan Howard (3-run home run in first), Cameron Rupp (solo bomb in the second) and Dominic Brown (3-run home run in the third) were all for naught.  The pitching quartet of Adam Morgan, Hector Neris, Justin De Fratus and Adam Loewen combined to allow 16 earned runs on 20 hits, 15 of which went for extra bases.

Featured Card:  The 11 total home runs in this game tied a National League record set by the Phillies (6) and Cubs (5) back on May 17, 1979 in a crazy 23-22, 10-inning game at Wrigley Field.  Randy Lerch started that game for the Phillies, pitching just a third of an inning and giving up five Cubs runs including a three-run home run to Dave Kingman.

Variations/Rarities:  Phillies collector Rick sent me a scan of his checklist for this set (see right) which allowed me to update the checklist above for several available variations.  Cards for McBride and Noles can be found both with and without facsimile autographs.  In his comment below, Steve indicates that there could be a Espinosa variation card available.  For the sake of completeness, I'll add it here too.

There are also two versions of the Rose card.  One has a portrait of Rose and the other shows him batting.  I'm not sure which is more prevalent than the other, so I've listed them both above as part of the main checklist.

In October 2018, I added LaGrow and Moreland cards to my collection without facsimile autographs.

Finally, while not part of the team issued set per se, there is a 1980 card of the Phillie Phanatic that was issued by Harrison/Ericsson.  I'm not including it as part of the main checklist above but it should be noted that a black and white Phanatic card does exist in the same size as the rest of the 1980 set.  (The same note pertains to the 1978 and 1981 team issued sets.)

1978 SSPC Baseball the Phillies Way - Part Two

Part one of the 1978 SSPC Phillies gallery was posted yesterday, and this is part two.  There seem to be a whole lot of photos taken at night in this set, as opposed to the day-time pictures featured in the 1976 SSPC set.  I'm not even sure Tug McGraw is standing inside The Vet on his card.  And I've always liked the Bake McBride card, since you can clearly see "Welcome to Veterans Stadium" on the scoreboard over his right shoulder.
