Spring Training Game 15 - Phils Top Yankees in Tampa

2013 Topps #249
Phillies 6
, Yankees 3
Spring Training Game 15 - Saturday Afternoon, March 11th in Tampa
Record - 7-7-1

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies played small ball to win this game against the Yankees, 6-3, while some of the team's stars were kicking off the World Baseball Classic Tournament.

What It Means:  After downplaying my excitement about the World Baseball Classic earlier in the week, I'll admit I've found myself tuning in to some of the games.  If nothing else, it's cool to hear some of the players' stories or to play "remember some guys" with former Phillies who are showing up in tournament games.

What Happened:  Michael Plassmeyer is still in the mix for the team's fifth starter role, and while he wriggled out of trouble in his 1+ inning of work, it wasn't pretty.  He allowed four walks and two hits without giving up a run.  The Phillies offense received RBI singles from Jim Haley, Edmundo Sosa and Jack Conley.  Scott Kingery had two more hits and his average is now a gaudy .476.

Featured Card:  In Phoenix, Team USA took on Team Great Britain beginning at 9pm with former Phillies pitcher Vance Worley on the mound for Great Britain.  Worley was the eventual losing pitcher, but  both runs he allowed were unearned as a result of a pair of errors, one from former Phillie infielder Darnell Sweeney.  Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run home run for Team USA in the win.

Camp Head Count:  65

The Phillies still haven't made any roster moves to trim their roster, which is a little odd two weeks into exhibition games.

Unused 2020 Chachi Fan Favorites Cards

Another offseason activity of mine is looking ahead to the upcoming Phillies schedule and planning out the cards I'll use for the Phillies and their opponents for each series preview post.  The pandemic meant the planned 2020 schedule was thrown out the window, and cards I created for several expansion teams went unused.  Again, solely to get these cards out there and out of my draft folder, here are the remaining Fan Favorites cards that would have appeared throughout the 2020 season if not for the pandemic.

Larry Milbourne was a casualty of the early season series cancellations due to the coronavirus outbreak on the Marlins.

2012 Topps Phillies

2012 Topps #617, #117, #449 and #120
The timing of this post is fitting as my oldest son Doug recently brought home a complete 2012 Topps factory set.  The cards are currently strewn about our dining room table in various stacks as he's slowly sorting and putting the set in order.

2012 Topps #280 (Back)
I wasn't overly thrilled when this set was first released, and I had no real emotional ties to it.  But the cool thing is . . . my son will.  He loves this set.  He's learning the players and showing me the cards he finds cool and asking me questions.  This set to him is what the 1979 Topps set was to me . . . already an "old" set when I discovered it, and therefore slightly mysterious and definitely awesome.

The Set
Number of cards in the set:  There are 660 regular cards to be found in the first and second series, with card #661 of rookie Bryce Harper added as a short-print and included within the factory set.  Before researching for this post, I didn't realize there are actual four different variations of the Harper card.  The update series added 330 cards.
My very brief thoughts on the set:  I wrote about my initial thoughts on the 2012 Topps set upon opening my first packs in February 2012.  Given my son's new found love for this set means that it now also holds special meaning to me as well.

2012 Topps #658, #28, #280 and #98
2012 Phillies
Record and finish:  Cracks in the Phillies armor first started showing this season, and they'd finish at an even 81-81 and in third place in the N.L. East.  Their undoing was a miserable month of June in which they went 9-19.  The Phils would miss the playoffs for the first time since 2006, and they haven't been back since.

Key players:  Injuries cut the seasons of Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz short and it speaks volumes that the most consistent hitter throughout the season was the veteran outfielder Juan Pierre.  The Phillies traded two-thirds of their starting outfield at the July non-waiver trade deadline, shipping Shane Victorino to the Dodgers and Hunter Pence to the Giants.  Domonic Brown and John Mayberry, Jr. assumed starting roles for the remainder of the season.  Jimmy Rollins led the team in home runs (23) and tied Ruiz for the team lead in RBIs (68).

2012 Topps #361, #392 and 2012 Topps Update #US206
On the mound, Cole Hamels was outstanding, winning 17 games and pitching to a 3.05 ERA.  Cliff Lee also turned in another fine season, owning a 3.16 ERA in 30 starts, but earning only six wins due to horrendous run support.  Roy Halladay's injuries starting taking their toll, and in his penultimate season the former ace went 11-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 25 starts.  Jonathan Papelbon joined the club in the offseason and saved 38 games.  Antonio Bastardo and Jeremy Horst were the team's other top relievers.

Key events:  Jim Thome returned to the Phillies in an offseason free agent signing, playing only four games in the field and being used mainly as a pinch-hitter and DH in American League ballparks.  He had his biggest hit of the season on June 23rd when his walk-off home run gave the Phils a 7-6 win over the Rays.  It was his 13th game-winning home run, the most in Major League history.

Thome joined Victorino, Pence and Joe Blanton in getting traded to contenders half-way through the season when the Phillies fell out of contention.  A week before the fire sale, the Phillies and Hamels reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension, which includes a vesting option for the 2019 season.  Howard hit his 300th career home run on September 22nd.

2012 Phillies in 2012 Topps
Who's in:  Phillies players appear on an impressive 17 cards in the first series and another 13 cards in the second series.  Add in the 9 Phillies cards from the update set, and that's a total of 39 cards for a complete Phillies team set.  That's the most since the 41 Phillies cards found within the 2009 offerings.  There's also a short-printed Howard variation card, which is probably the best Phillies card in the entire team set.
  • Cards of the eight starting position players - 8 cards
#117 Carlos Ruiz (c), #280 Ryan Howard (1b), #361 Chase Utley (2b), #617 Jimmy Rollins (ss), #28 Placido Polanco (3b), #658 Juan Pierre (lf), #449 Shane Victorino (cf), #120 Hunter Pence (rf)

2012 Topps #190, #458, #150 and #307
  • Cards of the starting pitching rotation - 5 cards
#190 Cole Hamels, #392 Cliff Lee, #458 Kyle Kendrick, #150 Roy Halladay, #307 Vance Worley
  • Base cards of players who played with the Phillies in 2012 - 17 Cards
#64 Michael Martinez, #98 Domonic Brown, #243 Justin De Fratus, #259 Michael Stutes, #287 Antonio Bastardo, #345 Jonathan Papelbon, #353 John Mayberry, Jr., #371 Jim Thome, #464 Joe Savery, #465 Michael Schwimer, #551 Joe Blanton, #634 Jose Contreras, #US82 Ty Wigginton, #US85 Jake Diekman, #US130 Laynce Nix, #US199 Nate Schierholtz, #US225 Josh Lindblom
  • Base cards of players who did not play with the Phillies in 2012 - 0 Cards
Topps did a really nice job with player selection for the Phillies, and for the first time since 2007 everyone who received a Phillies base card in 2012 actually played for the team in 2012.

2012 Topps #371, #353, 2012 Topps Update #US82 and 2012 Topps #345
  • 2011 National League Leaders cards - 3 cards
#156 Roy Halladay (Victory Leaders), #224 Ryan Howard (RBI Leaders), #297 Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee (ERA Leaders)
  • Active National League Leaders cards - 2 cards
#29 Roy Oswalt (Active Wins Leaders), #92 Roy Oswalt (Active ERA Leaders)

I kind of liked these cards when they came out, but I soured on them when it seemed as if every pack I opened had one of these cards in it.  The idea for this subset is unique, but I would have rather it been an insert set instead of taking up valuable room in the base set.
  • 2012 National League All-Star cards - 3 cards
#US91 Jonathan Papelbon, #US206 Cole Hamels, #US295 Carlos Ruiz
  • 2012 Record Breaker cards - 1 card, #US152 Jim Thome
Who's out:  As is the norm, the bench and the bullpen could have been shown more love.  Kevin Frandsen, Freddy Galvis and Erik Kratz were on the bench for most of the season, and a case could be made that relievers Chad Qualls and Horst deserved cards.

Phillies on other teams:  Thome has three cards in the first series featuring him with other teams.  He appears on two Active Leaders cards (#91 and #324) with the Indians and a Higlight/Checklist card (#97) with the Twins.  There are also cards of Schierholtz (#63 with the Giants) and Wigginton (#154 with the Rockies) in the first series.  Finally, if you want a 2012 Topps card of Mike Fontenot, who appeared in 47 games for the Phillies, he can be found within the Giants retail team set (#SF7).

2012 Topps #280b
What's he doing here:  I don't share the same venom towards Martinez as other Phillies fans, but I do find in a little strange that a utility infielder who struggled to sniff the Mendoza Line received Topps cards two years in a row.  Frandsen, a Phillies Room Favorite, got robbed.
Cards that never were candidates:  Frandsen, Galvis, Kratz, Horst and reliever Raul Valdes over Qualls.

Favorite Phillies card:  I love the short-printed Howard variation card, but since I'm not counting that as part of the regular team set, I'll go with Polanco's card featuring him at the bat rack.  The card definitely makes me think of Tony Taylor's 1970 Topps card.

Other Stuff
Variations:  After several years of quirky and interesting variations to be found in the Opening Day, Chrome or retail team sets, there were only two minor variations within the 2012 Topps family of products.  I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the Phillies becoming a mediocre team or if this was widespread for all teams.

In any event, the only variations to be found are the cards of Kendrick and Mayberry within the retail team set which feature the same photos as their flagship cards, but more tightly cropped.  Oswalt, who parted ways with the Phillies in October 2011, has a Phillies card in the Opening Day set.
Memory Lane:  I took a stab at drafting a working checklist for the set back in January 2012.  I'm still waiting to hear from Topps on this.

2012 Topps Gypsy Queen #277 Vance Worley

Pirates 6, Phillies 3
Game 145 - Wednesday Night, September 10th in Philadelphia
Record - 67-78, 5th Place, 15 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The bats went silent as the Pirates easily handled Jerome Williams and the Phillies, winning 6-3.

What It Means:  The team's hope for a winning record is becoming more and more remote.  It would take a 15-2 record at this point to pull it off.

What Happened:  Williams hit better than he pitched in this game, knocking in two runs with a single to right in the fourth.  Reliever Luis Garcia, who earlier in the day was named the team's best minor league pitcher for the year, got lit up again, allowing two runs on four hits without retiring a batter.  His Major League ERA this season is up to 12.27.

Featured Card:  Former Phillie Vance Worley, traded away to the Twins for Ben Revere back on December 6, 2012, earns the featured card.  He struggled mightily with Twins, but he may have found a comfortable home with the Pirates.  This was Worley's first start against his former team, and he earned the win by allowing only three runs over five innings of work.

Field Report:  We were there for this snoozer, and we totally missed the most exciting play of the game.  Doug and I both got soft serve ice cream in a Phillies helmet early in the game and Doug ended up wearing most of his ice cream, as it quickly melted.  We made a trip to the bathroom to clean him up just as Andrew McCutchen was rounding the bases in the fifth with his inside the park home run.

We did get to view the display of game-used items from the team's combined no-hitter in Atlanta, which was cool.  My personal record for the season is now 6-6, and I think we'll go to one more game this season.  A personal winning record is on the line!

2012 Topps Tier One On the Rise Autographs #OR-VWO Vance Worley

Pirates 8, Phillies 2
Game 86 - Friday Afternoon, July 4th in Pittsburgh
Record - 37-49

One Sentence Summary:  Roberto Hernandez spotted the Pirates a four-run lead in the first and the Phillies never came close to recovering in an 8-2 loss to the Pirates.

What It Means:  Something's got to give sooner or later, right?

What Happened:  Hernandez was awful in the first, barely escaping with only the four runs allowed.  The offense, in a complete and total show of their futility, managed two singles against Pirates pitching.

Featured Card:  In a sign that the game was completely under control by the Pirates, former Phillie and current Pirates starting pitcher Vance Worley pinch-hit for reliever Justin Wilson in the seventh inning.  Worley grounded out to third.  Worley was traded to the Twins in December 2012 for Ben Revere, and he struggled mightily in the American League, going 1-5 with a 7.21 ERA in 10 starts last season.

The Pirates purchased Worley from the Twins in late March and in four starts so far this season he's 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA.  On Thursday, he took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning in his start against the Diamondbacks.  I believe I added this 2012 Topps Tier One autograph card of Worley's after he had already left town.  The way the Phillies starting pitching has been recently, I kind of wish he'd come back.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, Domonic Brown rejoined the team after spending two games on the paternity-leave list.  Aaron Altherr was optioned back to Double-A Reading.

2013 Chachi Transactions #4 Vance Worley

Like any middle of the road Phillies staring pitcher over the past decade or so, Vance Worley was either dazzling us with his dominance over the opposing team's batters or making us shout at the TV because of his painful laboring on the mound.  I'll miss his faux-hawk and the Oakley goggles, but overall I like the trade that brought the Phillies a consistent (hopefully) starting center fielder for the next five seasons in Ben Revere.

2012 Bowman Platinum
Prospects #BPP25
Worley received his first licensed Phillies card in the 2010 Bowman Draft set, both regular and Chrome versions, and his 2012 Bowman Chrome card could very well be his last with the team.  Hopefully this transaction happened early enough so that no Worley Phillies cards sneak into 2013 releases.

Trevor May was just recently added to the 40-man roster, but now he's heading to Minnesota with Worley.  At the start of the 2012 season, May was ranked as the second top pitching prospect in the Phillies organization.  He struggled at Double-A Reading this year, and I can only selfishly hope that he doesn't turn into the next Gio Gonzalez.

2012 Topps Archives #188 Vance Worley

Phillies 8, Rockies 5
Game 89 - Saturday Night, July 14th in Denver
Record - 38-51, 5th Place, 14 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Vance Worley paced the team with his arm and his bat as the Phillies survived another shaky outing from the bullpen to win, 8-5.

What It Means:  It feels good to win.  It's been a while.  The Phillies go for the series win this afternoon before heading off to Los Angeles for some late night baseball.

What Went Right:  Worley pitched into the seventh inning, allowing just two runs on eight hits.  On the mound, the highlight of his night came when he struck out Michael Cuddyer with the bases loaded in the fifth.  At the plate, Worley slugged a two-out, two-run double in the sixth to give the Phils a 6-2 lead.

Carlos Ruiz continued his career season with a three-run home run in the first.  And perhaps most promising was the fact that the top of the line-up (Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Chase Utley) went 7 for 15 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs in the win.

Featured Card:  For just the second time this season, Worley earns the featured card honors.  This is his 1984-Topps style card from the Topps Archives set, released way back in mid-May.

2012 Topps #307 Vance Worley

One Day Catch-Up, Part 3 of 6

Phillies 2, Padres 0
Game 13 - Late Thursday Night, April 19th in San Diego
Record - 6-7, 5th Place, 3 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Vance Worley dominated the struggling Padres, striking out 11 on the way to a Phillies 2-0 victory.

What It Means:  A win's a win.  We'll take it.  And my family spent the day at the Magic Kingdom on Thursday, so it was a good day all around!

What Went Right:  The Phillies managed five singles and a Juan Pierre triple, scoring in the first and ninth innings.

Worley struck out a career high on the way to his first win of 2012.  Chad Qualls pitched a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon closed it out in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Featured Card:  Finally!  A Phillies win and I get to feature the winning pitcher.  This is Worley's card from Topps Series One.

Saturday, March 24, 2012

2011 Topps Heritage Chrome #C54 Vance Worley

Yankees 5, Phillies 3
Spring Training Game 22 - Friday Afternoon, March 23rd in Clearwater
Record - 9-11-2

One Sentence Summary:  The Yankees jumped on Vance Worley for three quick runs in the first and they held on to win, 5-3.

What It Means:  Worley got roughed up early, but he settled in to pitch a decent ballgame.  He struck out seven in his six innings of work.

What Went Wrong:  The Phillies managed only three late runs against the Yankees.  They're hitting .278 as a team so far this spring, which isn't that bad.   Problem is, they're having trouble scoring runs.

Erik Kratz hit another bomb of a home run in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two.

Featured Card:  I received a nice package in the mail yesterday from the heart of Red Sox Nation, located in Section 36.  The package featured an assortment of Phillies cards from 2011 and 2012 that Ron (the section's proprietor) had been setting aside for me.  Ron was kind enough to finish off my 2012 Topps Series 1 team set and he sent a bunch of parallels that I'll gladly add to my collection, including this shiny Worley card from last year.  I have a small stack of 2012 Red Sox cards already set aside to send to Ron shortly.

It's nice to receive a random package of Phillies baseball cards in the mail, and it's nice to know that the Red Sox cards I pull from packs are going to a good home.  If there are any other team collectors out there who would like to set up an arrangement similar to what I've got going on with Section 36, let me know.

It's simple really - I'll set aside cards I pull from packs from the team you collect, and you set aside Phillies cards for me.  A few times a year, we send packages to each other containing the cards we've gathered.  If done right, like how Ron and I do it, everyone wins.

2011 Multi-Ad
Reading Phillies #16
Camp Headcount:  40

Outfielder Domonic Brown was optioned out yesterday.  Brown was a long-shot to make the team's opening day roster, and this way he can gain more experience in left field while earning regular at-bats as an IronPig.  The Phils also made the unusual move of adding a player to their list of non-roster invitees when all-around utility guy Tim Kennelly was moved from the minor league camp over to the major league camp.  With the announcement that Michael Martinez will miss 6 to 8 weeks with a broken foot, the team will give Kennelly an audition over the last few weeks of exhibition play.  Kennelly has played regularly at first, third and catcher in the minors.

The camp headcount of 40 is more realistically 36, as the following players will begin the season on the disabled list - Ryan Howard (Achilles), Chase Utley (knees), Martinez (foot) and Justin De Fratus (elbow).

2011 Phillies Postcards - Hunter Pence

Phillies 9, Mets 4
Game 159 - Sunday Afternoon, September 25th in Flushing

One Sentence Summary:  The Phils snapped their ridiculous eight-game losing streak with a definitive 9-4 win over the Mets.

What It Means:  The Phillies pounded out 19 hits on the way to their 99th win of the season.  Phillies fans can relax and chalk up the last eight games to just a post-clinch hangover.  The offense is back, and everything is just fine.  (Right?)

What Went Right:  Batting third in the order, Hunter Pence atoned for his costly Saturday night error with a two-run home run in the first.  He finished with three hits and three RBIs.  Carlos Ruiz went four-for-four with two RBIs and Jimmy Rollins added three hits.

Roy Halladay (19-6) pitched an abbreviated outing, given the score and the pending postseason.  He allowed four hits while striking out three.

Featured Cards:  Last Sunday night, the Phillies gave away a set of nine postcards to every adult attending the game.  My brother-in-law Bill attended the game with his Dad, and he was kind enough to pass along a set to me.  The postcards are the same size and stock of the two team-issued sets that have been available for purchase at the ballpark throughout the year.  The set consists of Phillies highlights throughout the year, including "The Trade" for Pence in July.  The full checklist is as follows:

1.  Header Card - Featuring a montage of action shots from throughout the 2011 season
2.  Pitching In - Wilson Valdez, 5/25/11
3.  Three Consecutive Shutouts - Cliff Lee, 6/28/11
4.  All-Star Starter - Roy Halladay, 7/12/11
5.  Retro Night - Cole Hamels, 7/22/11
6.  Hall of Fame Executive - Pat Gillick, 7/24/11
7.  The Trade - Hunter Pence, 7/29/11
8.  Harry Kalas Statue Dedication, 8/16/11
9.  2011 Philadelphia Phillies Team Photo

2011 Phillies Team Issue 2 #49 Vance Worley

Phillies 1, Marlins 0
Game 86 - Monday Night, July 4th in Miami

One Sentence Summary:  The pitching trio of Vance Worley, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combined to deliver an Independence Day shutout.

What It Means:  The Phillies improved to 54-32 and they currently have a 4 1/2 game lead over the Braves.  The Marlins fell further into the basement of the N.L. East, as they're now 15 1/2 games out.

What Went Right: Worley (4-1) continues to impress, pitching seven solid innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six.  The Stutes-Bastardo tandem has to be the surprise of the season so far, as no one could have predicted the success both pitchers have had in the set-up man/closer roles.

The offense managed only six hits - two of which came from Domonic Brown.  The sole run was scored in the seventh when Brown scored from second on a Michael Martinez RBI-single.  It was a close play at the plate, with Brown appearing to just evade Marlins catcher John Buck's tag.

Featured Card:  I was a little torn with this selection.  As much as I wanted to feature a card for Martinez, solely because there may not be a good reason to do so for the rest of the season, Worley's performance was just too impressive to pass up.  This is his card from the "Series 2" team-issued set.

2010 Bowman Draft Picks #BDP28 Vance Worley

Phillies 2, Red Sox 1
Game 81 - Wednesday Night, June 29th in Philadelphia

One Sentence Summary:  The pitching trio of Vance Worley, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo shut down the Sox, Raul Ibanez suddently remembered how to hit and the Phillies took Game 2, 2-1.

What It Means:  Seriously - Worley to Stutes to Bastardo?  Who would have thought that trio would be a crucial part of the Phillies pitching staff at the mathematical half-way point of the season?  The Phillies are now 51-30 and they'll go for the sweep of the Sox tomorrow afternoon behind Cole Hamels.  I've been able to stick to the unwinding portion of my plan to unplug and unwind this week, but these games have been too enjoyable to completely unplug.  Enjoyable for a Phillies fan, at least.

What Went Right:  Worley (3-1) pitched seven strong innings allowing just an RBI-double to Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey (5-7).  He handed the ball over to Stutes, who pitched a perfect eighth and then Bastardo, who pitched a perfect ninth for his third save of the season.

Ibanez went 3 for 3 and fell a triple short of the cycle.  He knocked in the first run with an RBI-single in the second and he broke the one-all tie with a solo home run in the seventh.  It was his ninth home run and his first in the month of June.

Featured Card:  To date, Worley has only been featured in the 2011 Topps Heritage set and the 2010 Bowman Draft Picks set.  A few more performances like the one he turned in tonight and he should start popping up in many more releases.

2011 Topps Heritage #249 Vance Worley

Phillies 11, Pirates 4
Spring Training Game 16 - Saturday Afternoon, March 12th in Bradenton

Rays 6, Phillies 2
Spring Training Game 17 - Saturday Afternoon, March 12th in Clearwater

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies won and lost today as split squads battled the Pirates and the Rays.

What It Means:  John Mayberry, Jr. and Vance Worley improved their chances of making the team while Kyle Kendrick struggled.  Kendrick looked fine until the third inning against the Rays, when he allowed back-to-back bombs to Ben Zobrist and Johnny Damon.  Before it was over, he would allow five runs in his four innings of work.

Top Hitters:  Against the Pirates, Pete Orr tripled to lead off the first and fourth innings, on his way to a 3 for 5 day.  Ross Gload also added three hits, while Mayberry and Cory Sullivan each drove in three runs.

Top Pitchers:  Worley started against the Pirates and cruised through the first three innings before allowing a home run to Lyle Overbay in the fourth.  He struck out five in his 3 1/3 innings of work.  Mike Zagurski added two shutout innings.

2011 Topps Heritage #249 (Back)
Featured Card:  With a 4-year-old toddler and an 11-month-old baby, sometimes Saturday night means a trip to Target to do the grocery shopping for the week.  Not as crazy as Saturday nights used to be for us, but crazy nonetheless.  While making our way to the Star Wars aisle to see if our local Target had restocked yet from Christmas (they hadn't), Doug and I stopped at the baseball card aisle to see if there was anything interesting to be had.  Lo and behold, I found several blasters of 2011 Topps Heritage, along with rack packs and individual packs.  This Vance Worley card was the first Phillie pulled from the box.  Almost makes me wish I still collected the complete Topps Heritage set.  Almost.

And when did they stop putting gum into packs of Topps Heritage?

Other Stuff:  General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. signed a four-year contract extension this afternoon, taking him through the 2015 season . . . Former Phillie R.J. Swindle pitched a scoreless ninth innings for the Rays.

2010 Chachi #45 Vance Worley

Phillies 7, Braves 0
Game 161 - Saturday Afternoon, October 2nd in Atlanta

The Phillies won the penultimate game of the 2010 regular season, breaking through against the Braves' bullpen and scoring all their runs in the final three innings.  The Braves' loss sets up the intriguing possibility of a 3-way Wild Card tie that could result in the necessity of play-off games on Monday and Tuesday involving the Braves, Padres and Giants.  Those three teams are vying for the remaining two play-off spots.

Five Phillies pitchers combined to shutout the Braves, who only managed three hits against the quintet.  Rookie Vance Worley started things off with five solid innings and he was followed by Antonio Bastardo, Danys Baez, Ryan Madson and Jose Contreras.

The Phils started their scoring in the 7th when pinch-runner Brian Bocock came in to score on a Chase Utley single.  Bocock should have been retired on a double play ball, but Braves' third baseman Brooks Conrad threw Placido Polanco's grounder into center field for a huge error.  Six more runs were tacked on by the Phils aided by singles, a wild pitch, another Braves' error, a Wilson Valdez double and a bases loaded walk to John Mayberry, Jr.

A series sweep this afternoon would end the season on a high note and eliminate the Braves from playing further into October.

Marlins at Phillies: September 6th through September 8th

Monday 1:05 & 7:05, Tuesday & Wednesday 7:05

Records: Marlins 69-66, 3rd Place in the NL East (9 games behind the Braves); Phillies 78-59, 2nd Place in NL East (1 game behind the Braves).  The Phils have a 2 game lead over the Giants in the NL Wild Card race, and their magic number to clinch is 24.

2010 Multi-Ad Reading
Phillies #29
Vance Worley will make his first Major League start this afternoon in a game originally scheduled for June 9th, but postponed because of rain.  Worley made the jump from AA Reading to AAA Lehigh Valley earlier this year.  In 27 minor league starts, he's 10-7 with a 3.36 ERA and a 119 to 46 strikeout to walk ratio.  The fine folks over at Phuture Phillies will be doing a live blog this afternoon to discuss Worley's start.

The Phils also recalled pitcher Mike Zagurski from Lehigh Valley today and selected the contract of pitcher Nate Robertson - both leftys.  The Phillies are Robertson's 4th organization this year.  Late in Spring Training, the Tigers (with whom he pitched for 7 seasons) traded him to the Marlins.  He started 18 games for the Marlins going 6-8 with a 5.47 ERA and earning his release on July 27th.  (Interestingly enough, his best start of the season came against the Phillies on April 18th, when he pitched 6.1 innings of shutout ball for the win.)  The Cardinals signed him to a minor league deal, but it included an opt-out clause if Robertson wasn't with the big club by August 23rd.  He wasn't, the Cardinals released him and he signed with the Phillies.  He's expected to pitch middle relief for the Phils down the stretch and he'll be card #51 in this year's Chachi set.

Happy Labor Day and Go Phils!
