Game 129 - Bohm Walks It Off with 2-Run Triple!

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies battled throughout this game, eventually prevailing in extra innings on Alec Bohm's two-run, walk-off triple.

What It Means: They've now won seven in a row and suddenly the division lead is in sight.

What Happened: Phillies' starter Jesus Luzardo was hit early and often, allowing four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings, but striking out nine. Brandon Marsh and J.T. Realmuto hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second to tie the score, 2-2. The Phillies took a brief 3-2 lead in the third when Bohm singled home Luis Arraez, who had doubled to reach. Home Run Derby winner Jordan Walker hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, putting the Cardinals on top, 4-3. Luzardo would depart the game shortly thereafter. The Phillies tied it up and took the lead in the sixth on another RBI-double from Realmuto and a Justin Crawford sacrifice fly. Brooks Raley was on the mound in the eighth when the Cardinals tied up again on a Brian Torres RBI single.

In the 10th, the Cardinals took a brief lead when Jose Fermin singled home ghost runner Alec Burleson. But in the bottom of the 10th, Arraez singled ghost runner Bryce Harper to third and Bohm brought them both home with his triple to deep center to win the game.

Featured Card: Topps produced a Topps Now card for the smoking hot Bohm to commemorate his game-winning hit.

Field Report: We enjoyed this entire game from the muggy confines of the Diamond Club with friends. The Kyle Schwarber bobble head was nice, but the extra inning win was better.

Transaction: On Thursday, the Phillies claimed Andrew Hoffman (rhp) off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and optioned him to Lehigh Valley. Felix Reyes (1b) was recalled and place on the 60-day injured list with a broken right wrist to make room for Hoffman on the 40-man roster. In eight relief appearances this season with the Diamondbacks, Hoffman has a 7.71 ERA in 11 2/3 innings pitched.

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies rallied for a come-from-behind victory and Jhoan Duran shut down his former team in the ninth for his 26th save of the season.

What It Means: We listened to this entire game, from pregame to postgame, in the middle of our 12+ hour drive from Minneapolis to Pittsburgh. The Phillies completed the sweep and would open up a six-game series against the Marlins and Cardinals on Monday.

What Happened: The Twins jumped out to an early 4-0 lead following a first inning grand slam from Brooks Lee off Andrew Painter. Painter would settle down after that, allowing one more run in five innings pitched. The Phillies didn't start chipping away until scoring four in the sixth, capped by Alec Bohm's three-run home run to make it a 5-4 game. In the eighth, Bryce Harper singled and Luis Arraez doubled to start the inning. Bohm singled to right to tie the game, and with two outs Bryan De La Cruz grounded a single to left, scoring two runs and giving the Phillies the lead. Duran put a few runners on in the ninth but ended up striking out the side to secure the save.

Featured Card: With no more De La Cruz cards to post, I'll give Bohm another card here.

Game 124 - Bohm Goes 5 for 5 in Win Over Twins in MN

One Sentence Summary: Alec Bohm went 5 for 5 and the Phillies were in control following a seven-run fifth inning in this 9-1 win over the Twins.

What It Means: They'd go for a series sweep (one win in Iowa, two in Minnesota) on Sunday afternoon. (I'm officially only one week behind in my game summary posts.)

What Happened: Jesus Luzardo reaped the benefit of the offensive surge, allowing a run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out nine to temporarily give him the team lead. Alex McFarlane and Chase Shugart struck out five more Twins in a combined 2 1/3 innings of relief. The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the second when Alec Bohm doubled and eventually came home on a J.T. Realmuto sacrifice fly. They poured it on in the fifth. Luis Arraez walked with the bases loaded to score the first run of the inning. Bohm and Sosa both singled scoring two more and then Bryson Stott lifted a three-run home run over the right field wall to give the Phillies an 8-0 lead. Bohm would double and come home on another Realmuto sac fly in the ninth to bookend the day's scoring. Bohm had three doubles and a pair of singles in the game.

Featured Card: Bohm, who I was honestly hoping would be dealt at the trade deadline, has been red hot. Through this game and so far in August, he was batting .367 with five doubles and five RBIs.

Field Report: After the magical Field of Dreams game, Jenna and I made the four hour drive from Cedar Rapids to Minneapolis, touring Paisley Park on Friday and spending the day at Target Field on Saturday. We toured the ballpark in the afternoon, watched some of the Phillies' batting practice at the conclusion of the tour and made our way to Section 12, right behind the Phillies' dugout on the third base line, for some enjoyable baseball. Jenna immediately started receiving texts at the start of the game that we were clearly visible on the TV broadcast whenever a right-handed batter was at the plate. There was a great pregame tribute to former Twin Jhoan Duran before the game and it was cool being so close to the action.

Both the Brewers and Twins use cheerleaders and a between innings host to keep the crowd engaged throughout the game. I'm hoping the Phillies avoid going the cheerleader route for as long as possible, and the between inning host gave off a minor league ballpark vibe.

Transaction: Kameron Misner (of) was optioned back to Lehigh Valley following the Field of Dreams game.

2026 Chachi Field of Dreams Set

I knew I'd create a few custom cards from the Field of Dreams game for my 2026 Chachi set, but when walking from the movie site to the actual ballpark, I had the idea for an insert set to commemorate the event. There was a meandering gravel path between the two locations with some concessions, helpful ushers and what looked to be somewhat sturdy, life-size standees of stars from the Phillies and Twins. I took pictures of all the Phillies and the one ex-Phillie, with Jenna posing with a few of her favorites.

Shown here are those 11 photos, presented on a 1941 Play Ball design, which is close enough to represent the 1939 throwback uniforms worn by the Phillies.

Game 63 - Offense Leads Phils to Win Over Chisox

One Sentence Summary: The offense showed some punch and the bullpen held off the White Sox in this 8-6 series opening win.

What It Means: For the first time since early in the season, the Phillies have crawled back into the postseason picture with a Wild Card spot. There's still a lot of baseball to be played, but after the 9-19 start to the year, this is a great sign of things to come.

What Happened: Jesus Luzardo didn't have his best stuff, allowing five runs and three home runs in six innings of work. Fortunately, Jonathan Bowlan, Brad Keller and Jhoan Duran were on, holding the White Sox to just one unearned run over the final three innings. The Phillies exploded for five runs in the second inning, starting with a two-run home run from Brandon Marsh, his sixth of the year. Alec Bohm capped the scoring with a two-run double. Adolis Garcia added a solo home run in the fourth, and two insurance runs scored in the eighth on an Edmundo Sosa sacrifice fly, scoring a head-first diving Kyle Schwarber, and a wild pitch from White Sox reliever Seranthony Dominguez. Schwarber was 4 for 5 with four singles in this game.

Featured Card: I'll give Bohm the card for his big double in the second, although he was easily thrown out at third trying to extend it to a triple. I am irrationally thrilled with the return of the 4x6 team-issued photo cards after a three-year absence of the cards to the general public, and here's Bohm's card from the $5 set now available for sale at the ballpark.

Field Report: We enjoyed this game with friends in the Diamond Club, staying to watch the Duran light show and his 15th save.

Game 40 - Bohm, Turner Bust Out of Slumps in Win

One Sentence Summary: Alec Bohm and Trea Turner busted out of their slumps in a big way as the Phillies easily dismantled the Rockies, 9-3.

What It Means: They'll go for the series win this afternoon, and then head out on a six-game road trip against the Red Sox and Pirates.

What Happened: Aaron Nola was the beneficiary of the run support, but he couldn't stick around long enough to earn the win. Nola gave up three runs on six hits and a pair of walks before being lifted for Tim Mayza with two outs in the fifth. Tanner Banks, Chase Shugart and Orion Kerkering shut the Rockies down for the rest of the game.

Turner has been mired in a season-long slump after winning the batting title, and went 0 for 6 on Friday. He went 4 for 5 in this game. Kyle Schwarber hit a three-run home run in the five-run third inning. Bryce Harper left the game after the first inning with a migraine and his replacement, Felix Reyes, went 0 for 4 as his average dropped to .139.

Featured Card: Bohm was essentially benched Thursday and Friday, and in his first at-bat back in the line-up, he hit a solo home run to left. He'd connect again with another solo shot to lead off the fourth. Still not done, Bohm added a two-run double in the eighth.

One Sentence Summary: Alec Bohm did the honors this time, hitting a game-winning sacrifice fly to score Adolis Garcia with the winning run in Game 2.

What It Means: The Phillies swept the double header and the series, and they're 3-0 under new manager Don Mattingly. They'll head to Miami next for a quick four-game road series with the Marlins.

What Happened: It was a bullpen game, with Tim Mayza, Nolan Hoffman and Trevor Richards each pitching a pair of innings. Seven Phillies relievers allowed five runs on 13 hits while striking out 12, and Chase Shugart would earn his second win of the day.

Kyle Scwarber had four hits in the game, including a two out, game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Brandon Marsh. Marsh had collected a clutch, pinch-double to start the inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Garcia started the inning at second as the zombie runner, went to third on a perfect Bryson Stott sacrifice bunt and scored on Bohm's sacrifice fly.

Featured Card: Topps produced a cool Topps Now card to celebrate the walk-off wins in both halves of the double header.

Transaction: Between games, Kyle Backhus was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation and Richards (rhp) had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley. Hoffman (rhp) was returned to the IronPigs following the game.

One Sentence Summary: Alec Bohm hit a pair of home runs and Andrew Painter struck out four in 2 2/3 innings in this 11-8 slugfest victory over the Orioles.

What It Means: It seems like the Grapefruit League season is going much faster than usual this season? Given opening day is the earliest (I think) ever on March 26th, maybe it's just the perception I'm getting.

What Happened: Painter allowed three runs on five hits during his outing, including a two-run home run to Samuel Basallo in the third. Bohm gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first with his first home run, and added his second two-run home run in the fifth to give his team a 5-3 lead. The Phillies would pile-on with an RBI single from Garrett Stubbs and an RBI double from the still-not-suspended Johan Rojas. Liover Peguero gave them some cushion with a two-run double in the seventh, making it 11-7, Phillies. Tucker Davidson was hit hard by the Orioles in the seventh, allowing four runs on two hits and three walks.

Featured Card: Here's hoping for big things from Bohm in 2026. Having recently used the 2005 Topps design for my 2025 Chachi set, it bothers me how I'm able to create a closer representation of that set than Topps is. The last name font at the top of this 2025 Topps Archives card is way too smooshed. See here for my version of this card.

Bohm had a solid season in 2025, but his numbers declined when compared to those of his 2024 All-Star season. In 120 games, including 108 starts at third base and 12 starts at first base, Bohm batted .287 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs. He missed time with two different injured list stints in the second half of the season, with a left rib fracture in July and a left shoulder injury in September. Bohm is currently penciled in at third base again for the 2026 season, but prospect Aidan Miller could be getting closer to earning big league playing time.

Game 158 - Phils Set Franchise Record with 8 Home Runs; Sosa Hits 3!

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies set a franchise record by hitting eight home runs in a game, led by Edmundo Sosa's amazing three home run performance in this 11-1 trouncing of the Marlins.

What It Means: Good vibes all around. Records were set and the Phillies officially clinched a first round bye in the postseason. They'll host the Dodgers, Mets or Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS on October 4th.

What Happened: Jesus Luzardo was the beneficiary of the run support, picking up his team-leading 15th win while striking out ten. He now has 216 strikeouts for the season, tied for the league lead, and a personal career best. The record setting home runs started in the third when Kyle Schwarber hit a solo shot, his 55th of the season. In the fourth, Edmundo Sosa hit the first of his trio, followed a few batters later by Bryson Stott's 13th home run of the year, to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead.

Sosa hit his second of the game in the fifth. In the seventh, the Phillies put the game out of reach when Schwarber and Bohm went back-to-back. Nick Castellanos reached on an error, and then Otto Kemp and Sosa went back-to-back. Marlins' reliever Valente Bellozo was on the mound for all four seventh inning home runs. Schwarber's 56 home runs are two behind Ryan Howard for the most by a Phillies player in a single season. Sosa became the first Phillies shortstop with three home runs in a game.

Featured Card: A highlight card was definitely needed, and I'm disappointed Topps didn't use this photo for a Topps Now card.

Transaction: Sosa (inf) was activated from the injured list and Donovan Walton (inf) was designated for assignment. I think Sosa is healthy!

Game 124 - Phils Hang On to Down Nats

One Sentence Summary: Aaron Nola and Alec Bohm returned from the injured list with mixed results and the Phillies battled to an 11-9 win that began on Sunday morning.

What It Means: They went 6-4 on the roadtrip and now return home for three with the Mariners and three more with the Nationals.

What Happened: In his first start since May 14th, Nola completely fell apart, and fell apart quickly, in the third inning. Spotted to a 6-0 lead and with one down in the bottom of the third, the Nationals did this to Nola - single, single, single, walk, single, double, double - tying the score. Nola exited and Tanner Banks entered to restore order. The Nationals wouldn't score again until Paul DeJong hit a three-run home run off Max Lazar in the bottom of the ninth, resulting in Jhoan Duran needing to come in and secure the save.

The Phils scored a run in the first without a hit, and then scored five more in the second. Kyle Schwarber hit a two-run single, followed by an RBI single from Bryce Harper and topped off with a three-run home run from Bohm. They'd retake the lead for good in the fourth on a two-run single from Weston Wilson. Nick Castellanos added a solo home run in the sixth, hopefully breaking his lengthy slump, and two more insurance runs were added in the eighth. Every starter with the exception of Rafael Marchan had at least one hit, with Marchan going 0 for 5 on the day.

Featured Card: It's good to have Bohm back, and his first inning home run was his ninth of the year.

Transaction: Nola (rhp) was activated from the 60-day injured list and Cal Stevenson (of) was released to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Bohm (3b) was activated with Otto Kemp (inf) getting sent back to Lehigh Valley. Finally, Daniel Robert (rhp) was activated and also optioned down.

One Sentence Summary: Alec Bohm broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, as the Phillies would hold off the Reds in this 5-1 win.

What It Means: The Phillies would go for the series win on Sunday behind Zack Wheeler. (I like their chances here.)

What Happened: Edmundo Sosa tied the score at 1-1 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, and Bohm gave the Phillies the lead for good with his shot in the sixth. Kyle Schwarber would give the Phillies a 5-1 lead in the eighth with a two-run home run of his own, his 27th of the year. Ranger Suarez battled through five innings, allowing a run on five hits while striking out six. Jordan Romano, who got the win, Tanner Banks, Orion Kerkering and Matt Strahm held the Reds scoreless over the final four innings.

Featured Card: Bohm has steadily increased his production since the start of the season, and he's now batting .283 with eight home runs and 41 RBIs. His RBI tally is third on the team behind Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. Also, he's a screenshot from my phone as we spent this day in a very, very hot Florence, Italy. With a 10:05 start time, I had no shot of listening to any of this game.

Transaction: Buddy Kennedy (inf), designated for assignment when Bryce Harper was activated, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Lehigh Valley. Rather than accept the assignment, Kennedy elected free agency, ending his time with the Phillies. In 12 games over the past two seasons, he batted .111 (2 for 18) with a double and two RBIs.

Game 17 - Bohm's Clutch Hit Leads to Win

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies battled back late, receiving clutch hits from J.T. Realmuto and Alec Bohm in this 6-4 win over the Giants.

What It Means: Two more games with the Giants remain before the Marlins come to Philly for the weekend.

What Happened: Jesus Luzardo faced off against future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, with Luzardo finishing with a slightly better line score. Luzardo allowed three runs on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. Verlander took the loss and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, three walks.

J.T. Realmuto homered in the second and Brandon Marsh, mired in a lengthy 0-fer, hit a sacrifice fly to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead. The Giants tied the score in the fourth and took a one-run lead in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Realmuto singled home Kyle Schwarber to tie the game again. Bohm later singled to left to score Nick Castellanos and give the Phillies a 4-3 lead. Bryce Harper added a two-run home run in the seventh. Matt Strahm worked a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season.

Featured Card: Bohm and Marsh are both suffering through horrendous slumps, so it was great to see them both contribute to this win. Here's Bohm's team-issued card, available to members of the Kids Club or Club 215 at their Ashburn Alley kiosk throughout the season.

Field Report: Jenna and I were there, sitting in the very cold and very windy Section 204. The vantage from right field afforded some fantastic views of the sunset, but we could have done without the gusty (and did I mention cold) winds. Dinner was once again enjoyed at Pass at Stow prior to the game.

Game 1 - Phils Win in Extras After Record-Setting K Day

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies struck out a record 19 times on opening day, but still got away with an extra-inning, 7-3 win.

What It Means: It was an anti-climatic opening day for me, as I was 500 miles away in Myrtle Beach getting ready to watch my son and his high school team play a scrimmage at the Cal Ripken Experience. Both the Phillies and his team came away with wins, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't more excited about the high school scrimmage victory than the Phillies' opening day win.

What Happened: Nationals' starter MacKenzie Gore and four relievers combined to strike out 19 Phillies, with Gore tallying 13 of those in six innings of work, tying an opening day record. As soon as Gore exited, the Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the seventh with solo home runs from Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber. It was Harper's sixth opening day home run. Max Kepler made it 3-1 Phillies when he scored on a wild pitch in the eighth. Jordan Romano had a rough Phillies debut, allowing the Nationals to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.

In the the top of the 10th, Bryson Stott stole third with two outs after starting the inning at second as the zombie runner. Harper drew a walk, and Alec Bohm doubled them both home, giving the Phillies a 5-3 lead. J.T. Realmuto would bring home two more runs later in the inning with a triple. Zack Wheeler got a no decision, but struck out eight and allowed just a solo home run in his six-inning 2025 debut.

Featured Card: Bohm had the big hit, and there were times during the offseason it seemed he'd definitely be traded. I recently added this card to my collection, paying tribute to a 1991 Topps Magazine card.

Transaction: Prior to the game, opening day rosters were announced and Buddy Kennedy (inf) was officially designated for assignment. Weston Wilson (inf) and Ranger Suarez (lhp) were placed on the injured list, retroactive to March 24th.

On Wednesday, the Phillies traded Tyler Phillips (rhp) to the Miami Marlins for cash considerations. Phillips was out of minor league options and he made his debut with the Marlins on Friday, pitching three innings of scoreless relief. With the Phillies, he was 4-1 in eight appearances, including seven starts. He threw one memorable shutout on July 27th against the Guardians.

One Sentence Summary: The Phillies walked it off in Clearwater and lost in Dunedin, in the first split squad action of the spring.

What It Means: I honestly didn't realize it was a split squad day until I got an alert that Kody Clemens had hit a home run against the Blue Jays while I was very clearly watching the Phillies play the Orioles on TV.

What Happened: In Dunedin, Taijuan Walker got the start and allowed a run (Daulton Varsho home run) and two hits in his first two innings of the spring. Orion Kerkering got tagged with a blown save and Griff McGarry took the loss, with the two releivers allowing three Blue Jay runs in their combined 1 2/3 innings. Clemens hit his first home run of the spring in the second, and Gabriel Rincones, Jr. connected for his third home run in the fifth. In the sixth, Rafael Marchan doubled home Bryson Stott.

In Clearwater, Cristopher Sanchez departed after 2 2/3 innings and the bases loaded. Up until that point, he had allowed a pair of hits and walked a batter while striking out five. Gabe Mosser relieved Sanchez in the third and wasn't able to save Sanchez's line, giving up a two-run single. A sloppy seventh inning, with errors committed by Bryan Rincon, Matt Kroon and Paul McIntosh, gave the Orioles a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, Payton Henry walked, Rincon singled and McIntosh was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kroon singled home two runs to give the Phillies the walk-off win.

Oscar Mercado hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Alec Bohm homered twice.

Featured Card: Kroon had the big hit, but a two-home run day from Bohm deserves Featured Card status. I just wish the slugging third baseman would think about a haircut.

2025 Topps - The First Phillie!

I didn't hesitate earlier this year when the e-mail from Topps arrived in my inbox alerting me that boxes of 2025 Topps Series One were on sale from their website. I've missed out in the past, having to go to the secondary market (eBay) and paying an upcharge when the need to open new baseball cards inevitably overpowered me in prior Februarys. I didn't go crazy, adding just a hobby box and a blaster to my cart, and then waiting patiently for the February 12th release date.

The box was waiting for me when I arrived home on Wednesday, but sports practices required us to wait until Thursday to open the first packs of 2025 Topps as a family. The first Phillie, this Alec Bohm card, came quickly within the first pack I opened.

Topps has been on a roll over the past several years, and with the exception of the misfire with 2020's design, the 2025 Topps design adds to four solid set designs in the past five years. Updating my top ten gallery below, the 2025 set takes the place of the 2015 set in the #2 spot, with 2015 leaving the list after 10 years (!). I've used this summary in the past to describe the new Topps flagship design, but this is what a baseball card in the year 2025 should look like - crisp, great photo, modern graphics, some non-intrusive glittery effects and a little bit of silver foil with the Topps logo. I really like that we get the team's logo and name going up the side of a card, and the curved lines along the left border are a nice modern update to the 1982 Topps design.

We were particularly impressed with how Topps found a new way to display the player's position. The diamond in the bottom right indicates where the player would stand on the field, and it's one of those things I can't believe we've not seen on a baseball card before. The backs are nice and clean too, as has been the case in recent years, and kudos to Topps for once again making the card number easy to find and easy to read. My only very minor complaint is that some of the teams have player's last names in black (not white) making those harder to read. I would have preferred Topps go with all white for every last name for each team.

Revisiting my top ten ranking below, I might move 2022 and 2019 ahead of 2023. I still don't like the bottom three, but 2021 may eventually take over the worst design spot in my mind.
