One Sentence Summary:  The long ball once again hurt Aaron Nola and the Phillies' offense couldn't solve Roki Sasaki in this 3-1 loss to the Dodgers.

What It Means:  The Phillies will attempt another series win this afternoon behind Cristopher Sanchez.

What Happened:  Sasaki only pitched four innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out four.  The Phillies scored in the first inning after Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a single, went to third when Trea Turner singled to right and came home on an Alec Bohm ground out.  The offense wouldn't have another hit until Bryson Stott singled in the fifth, and then they'd have another offensive dry spell until Bryce Harper singled to lead off the ninth.

Nola took the loss, dropping to 0-2, allowing a two-run home run to Enrique Hernandez in the second and a solo home run to Michael Conforto in the sixth.  Nola allowed seven hits overall, a walk and he struck out a pair.

Featured Card:  38-year-old Luis Garcia pitched out of the Dodgers' bullpen against the Phillies on Friday night, shutting down the offense for 1 1/3 innings.  I had no idea the former Phillies' reliever was still pitching, and this is his thirteenth season in the majors.  He's bounced around a bunch, pitching with the Phillies (2013-18), Angels (2019), Rangers (2020), Cardinals (2021), Padres (2022-23), Angels again (2024), Red Sox (2024) and now the Dodgers (2025).  Way back in 2018, he was included in the Topps Phillies retail team set, and I haven't seen any sign (yet) of these sets returning for 2025.

The World Series is underway, the Nationals seem to be unstoppable and the Phillies may be naming their new manager as soon as Thursday.  Before we get too far into the Phillies' offseason, here's a look at all the major league players who joined and left the organization during the past year.

Tracking the Ex-Phillies

Each spring, I'll spend time reviewing every team's roster, list of non-roster invitees and their coaching staff.  There are always a few ex-Phillies that I'm surprised to see still around with Tyler Cloyd (Rays) and Cameron Perkins (Dodgers) catching my eye this year.

Here's a list of each team's Phillies alumni representation, and I've only included players, coaches and managers who actually suited up for the team.  Players who passed through the Phillies minor league system but never made the big club aren't represented here.

Special mention goes to Tommy Joseph, who signed with the LG Twins in Korea over the offseason, and Ty Kelly, who signed a minor league deal with the Angels but doesn't appear to be a non-roster invitee.

Garcia Swapped to Angels for Alvarez

Late Thursday night, the Phillies traded long-time reliever Luis Garcia to the Angels for lefty Jose Alvarez.  Alvarez becomes the third newest member of the suddenly rebuilt Phillies bullpen, joining Juan Nicasio and James Pazos who were acquired from the Mariners on Monday.  The team is still in the hunt for a closer.

Alvarez is a six-year veteran, with all but his first season spent with the Angels.  He made his debut with the Tigers in 2013 and since then he's appeared in 284 games and pitched to a respectable 3.69 ERA.  As in the case with most middle relievers, Alvarez's baseball card appearances have been scarce.  According to the Beckett database, he's had cards in three mainstream sets to date - 2010 Topps Pro Debut, 2013 Topps Update and 2015 Topps Update.

Prior to the trade, Garcia had been the second longest tenured Phillies player behind Cesar Hernandez as both made their debuts with the club in 2013.  In parts of six seasons with the Phillies, Garcia was the very definition of hit or miss, appearing in 251 games and owning an ERA of 4.12.  One of the team's more reliable relievers in 2017, he was at times infuriating to watch last season as evidenced by his 2018 ERA of 6.07.  I have 15 Garcia baseball cards in my Phillies collection, 7 of which come from the team-issued photo card sets.

I still can't believe we had never attended this event until last year.  On Thursday afternoon, Jenna and our two sons attended the annual Phillies Phestival benefiting the ALS Association.  For those of you not familiar with this event, it's the Phillies' signature charity event featuring an afternoon of player autograph stations, a silent auction, mystery grab bags for sale featuring signed memorabilia and everything else Citizens Bank Park has to offer.  The Phillies raised over $725,000 during the afternoon, passing the $18 million mark in terms of money raised for the charity since 1984.

We have a close family friend currently battling ALS, and I've recently become more involved with the Association.  My employer was a table sponsor at the event, giving us the opportunity to arrive early and have our pictures taken with Cesar Hernandez and coach Jose David Flores.  As I did last year, I've made a set of special edition cards to commemorate our day, and I'll break the set into two separate posts.

Here are my best memories from the event:

• We hustled.  We learned from last year that you go as quickly as you can to each autograph station, saving the other fun stuff for last after the players stop signing.  There were 20 total autograph stations and we hit 14, breaking into groups of two about 45 minutes into the event.  Had we broken up earlier, we probably could have hit more but it was fun to stick together for the beginning.  For the record, we missed the tables of Nick Williams/Andrew Knapp, Scott Kingery/Dylan Cozens, Rhys Hoskins, Charlie Manuel, Gabe Kapler/coach Rob Thomson and Tommy Hunter/coach Rick Kranitz.  No offense to the last table mentioned, but my autograph-seeking son flat out opted to pass on their table.

•  As was the case last year, everyone was exceedingly pleasant.  I stood in line by myself for the 1993 Alumni table, adding autographs of Kevin Stocker, Tommy Greene, Larry Andersen, John Kruk, Larry Bowa and Mickey Morandini.  Somewhat predictably, that bunch spent the time I was in line cracking jokes and discussing their plans for the evening.

• Thanks to fellow collectors Steve F. and Rick for the texts with table updates and leads on potential new photo cards.  The only new photo cards seemingly available from the event is a new card of J.P. Crawford in the style of the 2017 team-issued update set and a new Phillies Alumni photo card for former manager Charlie Manuel.  I've updated the 2017 Phillies Team Issue Update post here, and I'll have a comprehensive post on the Alumni Cards out soon.

• Relatively new additions Austin Davis, Mitch Walding and Dylan Cozens had nothing available to sign.  My hope was that the Phillies would produce special photo cards for the trio but they were sitting at their stations with nothing but Sharpies in front of them.

• Our oldest son Doug was on a mission to get as many autographs as possible in the two-hour signing period and by his count, he came away with 35 different autographed cards!  Credit needs to go to our youngest son Ben who helped his older brother with his mission, at one point telling Victor Arano that his name was Doug so that Arano would personalize the autograph for his brother.  Ben does not show the same zeal for autograph collecting as his brother, but I was beyond proud of him for being helpful.

• Doug and I were the last two people in line to get Jake Arrieta's autograph.  He was actually unbuttoning his jersey as we walked in, getting ready to leave the room.  He saw Doug round the corner, put his jersey back on and posed for a picture with Doug.  Great memory.

• Our luck with the mystery grab bags wasn't great, but I'm fine with that as everything went towards a great cause.  We came away with autographed baseballs from Luis Garcia (x 2) and Adam Morgan and an autographed hat from Hector Neris, as well as 3 Mike Schmidt bobble heads and a mini Harry Kalas statue.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  July 14, 2013 - Garcia's 2013 Chachi Card

Second Mention on The Phillies Room:  July 27, 2013 - I wanted to acknowledge the Major League debut of Steve Susdorf in Thursday night's game.  Susdorf got the call when Domonic Brown was placed on the relatively new seven-day disabled list, available specifically for players with concussion-like symptoms.

Susdorf pinch-hit for Kendrick in the seventh inning and promptly grounded into an inning-ending double play.  Welcome to the team, Steve - you'll fit right in!

But seriously folks . . . It's nice to see Susdorf get his shot after parts of six seasons in the minors.  Drafted by the Phillies in 2008, Susdorf was hitting .335 in Lehigh Valley this season.  He hasn't appeared on any mainstream baseball cards yet in his career, but I have five minor league cards of his in my collection.  Unless Topps decides to include him a set, he'll mostly likely join Ezequiel Carrera, John McDonald and Luis Garcia as members of the 2013 Phillies without a Phillies baseball card.

Record - 61-94, 5th place, 32 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The bullpen wasted a strong start from Henderson Alvarez as the Braves came back late to win this game, 4-2.

What It Means:  Following this loss, the Tigers, Giants and Phillies all had 94 losses and the White Sox are close behind with 92 losses.  One of these four teams will have the first overall draft pick in the June 2018 amateur player draft, and it seems as if the Phillies can't do any "worse" than having the 4th overall pick.

What Happened:  Alvarez departed after five innings with the Phillies holding a slim 2-0 lead. Kevin Siegrist allowed a solo home run to Rio Ruiz in the fourth and Luis Garcia coughed up the lead with a three-run eighth inning.

Featured Card:  Garcia is one of the team's longest tenured players at this point, having made his Phillies debut in 2013.  He's been maddeningly inconsistent again this year, and if he returns in 2018 I would hope it's in a middle relief role, as opposed to a late inning role.

Record - 60-91, 5th place, 31 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Rhys Hoskins had a clutch, three-run double in the seventh to give the Phillies the lead and ultimately a 6-2 win over the Dodgers.

What It Means:  The Phils are playing like they don't realize they're supposed to lose.  If they win three more games in their final 11 they'll avoid a 100-loss season which at one point seemed like their inevitable destiny.

What Happened:  Hoskins singled home the Phillies' first run in the sixth.  Odubel Herrera worked a bases loaded walk to tie the game at two before Hoskins cleared the bases to give the Phils a 5-2 lead. Aaron Altherr padded the lead with a solo home run (18) in the eighth.

Aaron Nola allowed two runs on five hits in his seven innings of work on the way to his 12th win. Herrera collected his 40th double of the season, the most since Jayson Werth had 46 in 2010.

One Sentence Summary:  Jerad Eickhoff pitched six solid inning and Nick Williams started the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth as the Phillies defeated the Brewers, 6-3.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won back-to-back series for the first time since April.  The first place Astros roll into town to begin a three-game series on Monday night.

What Happened:  Along with allowing only two runs on three hits over six innings, Eickhoff also contributed two hits and scored a run.  Luis Garcia pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season.  Howie Kendrick had a clutch two-run single in the fifth.
