One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Nola got hit hard (again) and the Phillies will need to wait to celebrate a division clincher with this 10-3 loss to the Royals, combined with a Mets win over the Rangers.

What It Means:  Bummer.  The clincher is coming, but now I'll need to lose sleep to enjoy it as the Phillies began a late-night stint in Los Angeles and Phoenix, beginning on Monday night.

What Happened:  Nola gave up six runs on six hits in six innings of work, putting the game too far out of reach for the Phillies to mount a late comeback.  The big blow was a three-run home run from Salvador Perez in the top of the sixth, giving the Royals a 6-2 lead.  The Phillies had taken a quick, 2-0 lead in the first on Kyle Schwarber's 52nd home run of the year, followed quickly by J.T. Realmuto's 12th home run of the year.  Royals' starter Noah Cameron settled down after that, pitching six scoreless innings before his exit.  In the bottom of the eighth, Bryson Stott hit a solo home run.  The Phillies offense had five hits overall and didn't come to the plate once with runners in scoring position.

One Sentence Summary:  Matt Strahm couldn't hold a narrow one-run lead, allowing the Athletics to score twice in the eighth, eventually winning the game, 5-4.

What It Means:  The modest nine-game winning streak came to an end.  After an off day on Memorial Day, the Phillies open a six-game homestead on Tuesday against the Braves and Brewers.

What Happened:  Jesus Luzardo's day started off shaky, as the starter allowed three first inning runs, but he'd settle in after the first to shut down the Athletics over the next six innings.  He struck out 10 in his outing.  Trea Turner singled to center in the third to score Brandon Marsh and cut the score to 3-2.  Turner tied the score in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.  And Turner briefly gave the Phillies the lead int he eighth with a solo home run.  With one out in the bottom of the eighth and Strahm on the mound, Logan Davidson walked and Lawrence Butler tripled him home.  Willie MacIver singled home Butler to give the Athletics the lead and hand Strahm his second blown save of the season.

Featured Card:  The loss gives me a chance to feature one of the all-time great Phillies born in Sacramento, Larry Bowa.  Other former Phillies born in Sacramento include John Vukovich, Rhys Hoskins, Dick Ruthven, Lowell Palmer, Brad Lidge, Randy Lerch and Brock Stassi.

1995 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Description:  For the seventh and final year, the card fronts feature a photo with the player's, coach's or manager's name in a red band with white text.  The card backs feature biographical information along with complete career statistics.  At the time, I considered it a major step forward that the set's designer had actually modified the appearance of the backs of the cards.

How Distributed:  The original 36-card set was available for sale at Veterans Stadium throughout the season.  There was no update set issued, marking the first time since 1986 no new cards were issued later in the season.

The Ryan card uses the same photo as his 1994 photo card.  Ashburn and Schmidt were both inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 30, 1995.  The backs of their cards indicate their Hall of Fame status and list career highlights.

Set Composition:  Of the 26 players featured in the set, 25 were on the Phillies' opening day roster and one (Munoz) started the season on the disabled list.

Omissions:  The Phillies carried 28 players for the first 17 games of the season, due to the strike-shortened spring training.  That means three players on the opening day roster were omitted from this set - Mike Lieberthal (c), Andy Carter (lhp) and Mike Williams (rhp).  Tommy Greene (rhp) also started the season on the disabled list, and he was omitted while Munoz got a card.  

There are a bunch of good candidates had the Phillies decided to issue an update set.  If we go with the same 10 card set-size from 1994, and use the Mark Whiten acquisition on July 24th as the cut-off, my imaginary update set would include:  Kevin Elster, Sid Fernandez, Tommy Greene, Mike Lieberthal, Tom Marsh, Omar Olivares, Andy Van Slyke, Mark Whiten, Mike Williams, Phillie Phanatic.

Variations/Rarities:  This is relatively tame year in terms of variations or rarities, most likely thanks to the lingering effects of the strike.  In the original post for this set (see link below), fellow collector Rick mentioned there are some cards available with facsimile autographs.  He also passed along he had added a Larry Andersen photo card to his collection with a 1995 copyright date, the same photo as Andersen's 1994 photo card and this quote on the back:  "You're only young once, but you can be immature forever."  Andersen spent the 1995 season as the pitching coach for the Reading Phillies.

Game 154 - Rolen Returns, Bohm Walks It Off

One Sentence Summary:  The Mets' attempted comeback fell short when Alec Bohm singled home Trea Turner to give the Phillies a 5-4 walk-off win.

What It Means:  The Magic Number to clinch a postseason berth is three.

What Happened:  The Phillies took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth when J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run home run, his 20th of the season.  Kyle Schwarber singled home Johan Rojas in the seventh for an insurance run.  Francisco Lindor hit a solo home run off Gregory Soto in the eighth, bringing the Mets to within a run.  In the ninth, and with Craig Kimbrel on the mound trying to close it out, Brett Baty stunned the crowd with a game-tying solo home run.

With the game in extra innings, Seranthony Dominguez worked out of a mostly self-created bases loaded jam, striking out Lindor and Pete Alonso to end the Mets' threat in the top of the 10th.  With Turner at second as the ghost runner in the bottom of the 10th, Bohm laced his single to right, scoring the winning run and starting yet another on-field celebration.

Featured Card/Field Report:  Jenna, Doug and I braved the windy weather and attended this game, solely to see Scott Rolen officially inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame in a pregame ceremony.  Rolen had a scheduling conflict and couldn't attend Alumni Weekend in August.  My feelings toward Rolen have softened over the years, and the bitterness I felt when he unceremoniously left Philadelphia in 2002 has dissipated over time.  His speech was on the mark and sincere and the cheers from the early-arriving fans outweighed the few boos.  Former teammates Wayne Gomes, Mark Grace, Kevin Sefick, Rico Brogna, Kevin Jordan and a few others I couldn't quite place were on hand.  The card shown above shows the Wall of Famers who were in attendance for the ceremony.

Doug staked out the alumni suite within the Hall of Fame club, and his patience was rewarded when Rolen came through and signed for the autograph seekers assembled there.  Rolen signed Doug's Wall of Fame print, which joined his quickly growing, and impressive collection.  Shake Shack was on the menu for all of us, and I continue to be underwhelmed by their burgers.  I think I'm in the minority?

Transaction:  The Phillies purchased the contract of Orion Kerkering (rhp) a 22-year-old 5th round draft pick from 2022 who began the season at Low-A Clearwater.  Kerkering has shot up through the system quickly, having been recently promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.  Yunior Marte (rhp) was sent down to Lehigh Valley and Drew Ellis (inf) was designated for assignment to make room for Kerkering on the 40-man roster.

Game 118 (Continued) - Alumni Weekend Chachi Cards

I didn't have enough room to tag everyone in my main game summary post, so here's a continuation post featuring the bulk of the Chachi Alumni Weekend insert cards.  This is always a fun night, and creating these cards is annually a fun project.

1990 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  45
Card Size:  4 1/8" x 6"

Description:  For the second year in a row, the card fronts feature an action photo with the player's, coach's or manager's name in a red band with white text.  The card backs feature biographical information along with complete career statistics.  The set is sponsor-less, as Tastykake sponsored its final set in 1989 and the Medford Food Company wouldn't come along as the new sponsor until 1991.

How Distributed:  It took me years to track down this set, and I finally found one in September 2014 at The Philly Show.  The dealer I bought the set from told me these cards were never sold in complete set form and he had hand-collated the entire 1990 set.  According to him, the cards were distributed four or five at a time throughout the season at Veterans Stadium.  I don't know if all that's true or not, and I don't know how to verify it, but it would help explain why this photo card set eluded my collection for 24 years.

An eight-card update set was produced very late in the season, featuring what was most likely Dale Murphy's first Phillies baseball card.  Murphy was acquired from the Braves on August 3rd.

Schmidt's #20 was retired in a pre-game ceremony on May 26th, and cards of the four players to have their numbers retired - Ashburn, Roberts, Carlton and Schmidt - are included in the set.  Also of interest is Schmidt's first card as a broadcaster, featuring him with his fellow PRISM broadcasters.  Schmidt's first stint as a broadcaster lasted just the one season.

For those of you not in the Philadelphia area, PRISM was the Philadelphia-based HBO equivalent that broadcast a handful of Phillies games every year between 1976 and 1997.

Set Composition:  Of the 27-man opening day roster, only Moore and Frohwirth are omitted from the original set, with Moore getting a card in the update set.  Tommy Barrett and Floyd Youmans spent the entire season on the Disabled List, and Steve Ontiveros spent all but the last month of the season out with an injury, and none of those three are in the set.  Beginning the year in the minors, but earning a spot on the checklist are Grimsley, Jones and Vatcher.  The latter two were added to the roster on May 30th, and Grimsley wasn't called up until August 8th.

The eight card update set may not have all been issued all at once, given Freeman and Boever are both in it and they were traded for each other on July 23rd.  Freeman headed to the Braves with Boever coming to the Phillies.  Murphy and Greene were acquired from the Braves on August 3rd for Parrett, Vatcher and minor leaguer Victor Rosario.  Noles is a surprise addition, as he was on the active roster for three games in early May, his comeback attempt cut short by arm injuries.

Omissions:  Back-up catcher Tom Nieto appeared in 17 games but was on the team's active roster for 73 games during the season.  Late season call-ups Wes Chamberlain, Mickey Morandini, Louie Meadows and Darrin Fletcher all saw time with the Phillies in September, so it's understandable no photo cards were created for that quartet.

Variations/Rarities:  Fellow collector Rick left a few comments on my original post for this set and sent me an e-mail with scans showing 12 cards made available at the 1990 ALS Autograph Party fund raising event (later the Phillies Phestival) held at Veterans Stadium on July 30th.  The Phillies issued 10 cards celebrating the ten year anniversary of the 1980 World Champions.  Coach Hal Lanier received his own card and there are two versions of cards for Larry Bowa - one showing him as a coach, and one showing him up at bat.  The back of the 1980 commemorative cards feature a 10th Reunion logo.

Trivia:  The Beckett database incorrectly lists the set as "1990 Phillies Tastykake" even through the Tastykake logo or name is nowhere to be found on the set.  The Beckett database also omits the eight update cards.  The 2001 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards lists the set at "1990 Phillies Photocards," and omits the Vatcher card from the main set.  For years, my want list for this set included only 44 cards as most published checklists for the set omit the Vatcher card.

Game 107 - Reed, McBride Inducted Into Wall of Fame

One Sentence Summary:  Following the induction of Bake McBride and Ron Reed into the Phillies Wall of Fame, the current offense stayed hot as the hapless Nationals fell yet again, 11-5.

What It Means:  The Phillies own a four game winning streak and have won nine of their last ten.  They have a one game lead over the Brewers for the third Wild Card spot and they'll go for the four-game series sweep this afternoon.

What Happened:  Every starter except Kyle Schwarber had at least one hit, with Jean Segura leading the way with a three-hit night.  Rhys Hoskins hit his third straight first inning home run in a row.  Matt Vierling added a three-run home run in the first, with J.T. Realmuto contributing a two-run home run in the sixth.  Bryson Stott had a two-run triple and Edmundo Sosa doubled home Realmuto for his first hit with the team.  Ranger Suarez picked up the win, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Featured Cards/Field Report:  Doug and I returned to the Hall of Fame Club, arriving shortly after the gates opened and grabbing a prime spot once again right aside the suite where various Wall of Famers and alumni were gathered.  Doug was on a roll the entire night, adding autographs to his Bake McBride/Ron Reed print (shown above) and adding solo signatures to past Wall of Fame prints.  Some of the signers were repeats from the night before, and other than Charlie Manuel, who gets a second card, I've created cards for all the new alumni who signed for Doug on Saturday night.

We were bummed McBride wasn't able to join the festivities, and it was somewhat surreal for me to see all my heroes from the 1980 team.  Of the former players and coaches stopping to sign, only Luis Aguayo and George Vukovich stopped short of Doug's spot before going into the suite.  Bob Boone, Dick Ruthven and (I believe) Warren Brusstar didn't sign at all.

We found it extremely impressive that Manny Trillo, Bobby Abreu, Manuel, Dickie Noles, Mike Lieberthal, Randy Wolf and Lee Elia all signed as many autographs as wanted.  They were gracious with their time, often stopping to chat with the assembled fans.  Trillo especially took his time, working slowly through the line, signing anything and everything put in front of him.  It was a memorable night, and we're already looking forward to next year!

My early prediction for the 2023 Wall of Fame inductee is Larry Andersen.  The current broadcaster has cut back on his schedule, and he was a member of both the 1983 and 1993 Phillies teams, who will be celebrating their 40th and 30th anniversaries next season, respectively.
