2018 Phillies Team Issue 2 #45

In a somewhat surprising move, last season's assistant pitching coach, Chris Young, was promoted to the full-time gig and the former pitching coach, Rick Kranitz was let go.  It had been reported on Wednesday that a few other teams were inquiring as to the availability of Young and rather than lose him, the Phillies opted to promote him.  Kranitz spent only the 2018 season in the role of pitching coach, having previously served as bullpen coach in 2016 and assistant pitching coach in 2017.

Kranitz appeared in each team issued photo card set since 2016, and I'll fondly remember him for always being willing to sign an autograph for my son Doug.  After each pre-game autograph hunt, Doug would report back with the list of signatures he'd received and finish with, "And oh yeah, another Rick Kranitz."  He probably has a dozen things signed by Kranitz in his bedroom.

Speaking of coaches, the nebulous roles of the field staff continue to evolve for the Phillies as Paco Figueroa was recently named the team's baserunning/outfield coach.  I'm not sure if he'll be in uniform during games in 2019 or not, but he's currently listed on the team's website along with nine (!) other field coaches.  Figueroa played in parts of seven seasons in the minors, mostly within the Orioles organization, although he did play in 68 games with the 2011 Reading Phillies.

To refresh your memories, the Phillies now have the following "traditional" coaches:

• John Mallee - hitting coach
• Chris Young - pitching coach
• Jose David Flores - 1st base coach
• Dusty Wathan - 3rd base coach
• Jim Gott - bullpen coach

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  November 18, 2017 - Phils Get Gott . . . The Phillies filled another coaching position on Friday afternoon, adding former pitcher Jim Gott as their new bullpen coach for the 2018 season.  Gott replaces John McLaren, who was let go following the season.

Gott spent the past five season as the Angels' minor league pitching coordinator and he served as the Angels pitching coach from 2010 to 2012.  He enjoyed a 14 year playing career with the Blue Jays (1982-1984), Giants (1985-1987), Pirates (1987-1989, 1995) and Dodgers (1990-1994).  He saved 34 games for the Pirates in 1988, at the time breaking Kent Tekulve's single season save tally for the franchise.

Gott appears in every Topps flagship set between 1983 and 1995.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  December 6, 2017 - The Phillies' 2018 coaching staff continues to take shape with the addition of Rob Thomson as the bench coach, Chris Young as the assistant pitching coach and Rick Kranitz officially getting the title of pitching coach.  At this point, only a first base coach is needed to round out Gabe Kapler's staff . . .

Young is not to be confused with the former All-Star outfielder or pitcher of the same name.  This Young pitched for six seasons in the Rockies, Pirates and Marlins systems but never made it to the big leagues.  He was the scouting supervisor for the Astros last season.  Young's baseball card appearances are sparse, with only two minor league cards to his name.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  November 22, 2017 - I have two Pedro Guerrero baseball cards in my Phillies collection.  This lenticular card from the 1986 Sportflics set featuring Guerrero, Mike Schmidt and Darrel Porter is one of those cards.  That's Guerrero's leg poking through behind Schmidt.  The former slugger also appears on the back of Pete Rose's card from the 1983 Topps Foldouts set.

The Phillies' new assistant hitting coach, also named Pedro Guerrero, apparently is no relation to the former big leaguer who was a five-time All-Star and played for 15 seasons with the Dodgers and Cardinals.  The Phillies' Pedro Guerrero is a 28-year-old who played eight seasons in the Dodgers' minor league organization and served as their Rookie-level bench coach for the Ogden Raptors the past two seasons.  He worked with new Phillies manager Gabe Kapler during Kapler's time with the Dodgers' organization.  The younger Guerrero's only baseball card appearances to date can be found within Dodgers' minor league team sets.

First Mention on The Phillies Room:  September 22, 2016 - Doug's Continuing Autograph Adventures . . . Doug and I attended this game together, with Doug immediately heading down to the Phillies dugout 90 minutes before first pitch to claim his spot for autograph seeking.  His patience paid off as several players and a few coaches came over to him to sign his cards.  Jared Eickhoff was a repeat signer for Doug, and Freddy Galvis was a pleasant surprise as he signed right before the start of the National Anthem.  Coaches Mickey Morandini and Dusty Wathan also signed with Wathan adding his autograph to the Phillies team card from the 2016 Topps set. Spending the most time signing was probably Darin Ruf, who was very gracious with his time.
