Tracking the Ex-Phillies

Each spring, I'll spend time reviewing every team's roster, list of non-roster invitees and their coaching staff.  There are always a few ex-Phillies that I'm surprised to see still around with Tyler Cloyd (Rays) and Cameron Perkins (Dodgers) catching my eye this year.

Here's a list of each team's Phillies alumni representation, and I've only included players, coaches and managers who actually suited up for the team.  Players who passed through the Phillies minor league system but never made the big club aren't represented here.

Special mention goes to Tommy Joseph, who signed with the LG Twins in Korea over the offseason, and Ty Kelly, who signed a minor league deal with the Angels but doesn't appear to be a non-roster invitee.

Spring Training Game 19 - Thursday Afternoon, March 14th in Clearwater
Record - 8-10-1

One Sentence Summary:  Aaron Cook and Rodrigo Lopez were the unlikely pitching stars in this 2-1 win over the Pirates.

What It Means:  Cook and Lopez are both vying for the same long-man/sixth starter roster spot and their performances today will make a final decision even more difficult.

What Went Right:  Cook started and pitched three scoreless innings and Lopez followed with two scoreless innings of his own.  Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarte saved a run with a great throw to the plate in the second.

The Phillies scoring came on a Ryan Howard sac fly and a solo home run in the eighth from Team Canada's Pete Orr.

Featured Card:  Orr's home run came off former Phillie Mike Zagurski, who is trying to earn a roster spot with the Pirates.  If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times - when an opportunity presents itself to post a Zagurski card, you take it.

2010 Chachi #40 Mike Zagurski

I've been out of town for a few days for work purposes, so I haven't had a chance to comment on Jayson Werth's departure, or Pat Gillick's induction into the Hall of Fame or even Domonic Brown's dismissal from the Dominican Winter League after hitting .069 and looking "sluggish."

However, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to post lefty reliever Mike Zagurski's 2010 Chachi card. 

You may be asking, "What does Zagurski have to do with the Winter Meetings or $126 million over 7 years or the team's apparent pursuit of Dennys Reyes and Delwyn Young and Juan Rivera and Jeff Francoeur?"

And I would answer, "Absolutely nothing."  For some inexplicable reason, I had Zagurski's Chachi card saved to my work laptop.  I'm as puzzled as you are.

Zagurski pitched in only eight games for the Phillies in 2010 - five in June and July and three more after his call-up in September.  He threw a total of seven innings and his 10.29 ERA is a good indication of how things went for him.

A few birthday wishes today . . .

Happy birthday wishes are in order for Mike Zagurski, born this day in 1983. Zagurski hopes to crack the Phillies bullpen this year and as one of the leftys competing for a spot out of Spring Training, he might just do it. Zagurski pitched in 25 games for the Phils back in 2007, before injuries and surgeries derailed his next few seasons.

Former Phillie luminaries Gavin Floyd and Pete LaForest are also celebrating birthdays today.

Most importantly though, happy birthday to my Dad, without whom none of this would have been possible.
